You know what is killing the tv and movie industry? Besides pirates?

That's right, it's your scummy student friends coming over and watching a movie at your place. For the price of one (1) rental. zomg! You scum!

Luckily Microsoft is coming to the rescue!

A newly surfaced patent filing from Microsoft’s Xbox Incubation team details one of the new innovations they’ve been thinking about. This one could be very popular among major movie and television studios. But it probably wouldn’t generate much excitement among Xbox users.

consumerdetector1.jpg?7794feThe patent application, filed under the heading “Content Distribution Regulation by Viewing User,” proposes to use cameras and sensors like those in the Xbox 360 Kinect controller to monitor, count and in some cases identify the people in a room watching television, movies and other content. The filing refers to the technology as a “consumer detector.”

In one scenario, the system would then charge for the television show or movie based on the number of viewers in the room. Or, if the number of viewers exceeds the limits laid out by a particular content license, the system would halt playback unless additional viewing rights were purchased.

Fucking awesome! Thanks Microsoft! (goes off to point Kinect to a miniture model of his living room with one green army man facing it.)

It's fucked as soon as everyone sits down.

No we're fucked as it pauses the video and gets everyone to stand up God Save the Queen style.

The companies will love it.

-Consumers standing up will make them easier to count.

-Consumers standing up won't be asleep so they won't be 'stealing' by sleeping through unskippable commercials.

Since its inception it looked like kinect was trying (ignore how successful it is) to emulate the minority report stuff. The idea being you too can be tom cruse waving your hands around and stuff just works right. Well another part of that movie was the scanning your eyes to give you personalised advertising, that could be another thing they're aiming at getting the users viewing an "entertainment experience" but now with targeted adverts.

I mean, at the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, surely throwing a towel over your Kinect would instantly defeat it? It would only really work in commercial locations where you don't have access to the Kinest to, say, unplug it or cover it up.

Unless in the future the Kinect came free with your console or was built into your tv. And if it stopped working then it would freeze the picture or display a message giving you a number for support. (Or warning you not to mess with the camera.)

A bit like when you buy a game and it asks you to prove that you actually bought it.

Oh. My. God.

Imagine having to navigate TV for Windows Live to access movies or tv shows you had already paid for.
