Star Wars: The Force Awakens

What, people seriously think it's sensible to be windmilling about this?

'banishing the memory of the sequels' - we currently know FUCK ALL about these films and people are already talking of 'them' 'finally getting it right'?

It's ridiculous.

Star Wars fanboys, you too crazy.

Alternatively, people are excited the franchise is being given a new chance without Lucas writing and directing. If it's revealed in a few weeks time that he is majorly involved, then people will soon become disillusioned. As it stands, this is the best piece of news to happen to the Star Wars Universe in about fifteen years, so let people have their fun.

Granted, but people are saying 'bring back the old characters, bring back the old ships' - it like you're asking the studio to be lazy, derivative, stupid and to ultimately disappoint you.

A guy I follow on twitter who works for Variety just posted that he's heard a rumour that Brenda Chapman could direct. She directed Prince of Egypt and co-directed Brave foe Pixar, who she has since parted conpany with. May well turn out to be nothing or an in-joke.

Why does it have to be lazy and derivative? Star Trek was rebooted a few years ago - same characters and same ship but they got new writers and a new director and it was well received. Granted, they were different actors, but still the same characters. Why does this have to be different?

Not really - if the films are shit it won't be because the Millennium Falcon is in it.

And what would be the point of Episode 7 with no links to the originals - like them or not - the droids have to be in it and doing something like a new Sith big bad killing Luke or Han in Episode 7 will carry a lot more weight than a mass jump forward and a brief mention of the old characters in the opening crawl.

Oddly enough, I was thinking about starting a thread about "Where's the new Star Wars?" the other day. Not "Star Wars" in the sense of a continuation of the series, but more along the lines of why hasn't there been another space-opera series since. There hasn't really been anything with the same sense of scope or scale. And now this has been announced. :)

I've always liked the series (I was eight at the time of the original movies release), but never been a fan-boy. I'm a man of relatively simple tastes, and enjoy the films for the joy of watching vast fleets of spaceships blow the hell out of each other in glorious detail almost as much as any consideration for plot or character, so even the prequels were able to sate this requirement to a large degree. If we get more of the same, I'm happy.

I do wonder what the thread will be like upon the next films' release though. I fear it may be like someone dropping the Prometheus thread into a magic porridge-pot...

Obviously this deal brings the potential for the films to be both good and bad but surely nothing can be done that would be as bad as the prequels? Even with Lucas consulting, hell even if he did the treatment, there will still be others involved in bring these movies to life and was the major difference between the production of the originals and the prequels. A fresh voice(s) is what Star Wars needs and that's what its going to get. I'd say that's at least a reason for optimism if not an excuse to get complete hyped up for a few days.

I'm not a massive Star Wars fan (love Empire Strikes Back, the rest... eh), but I can see there being lots to be excited about for those who are, especially if they do something sensible like give responsibility for the films to Marvel Studios or something like that. That strikes me as a perfect fit.

Imagine being optimistic. Imagine.

Can you?

I can. I have expressed an optimistic sentiment in here (about a decent director being able to make a good story in such a rich universe) but you've chosen to ignore it because it doesn't fit in with your bullshit narrative.

Don't you understand that I'd like the film to be as good as anyone here would like it to be good? However, there is plenty of reason to excercise caution

I can imagine being massively disappointed if I hyped myself up continually for the next 2.5 years and the film was shit.

Can you?

Is it healthy, the kind of baseless hype we're seeing in this thread already on the DAY of the announcement?

Good points all (although I didn't much like Star Trek) but I thought people were asking for the same actors to come back as well? Sounds naff as hell to me.

As I mentioned in OT, I'm happy to be gutted in 2015 if it's shit, because I've got 3 years of being the excited meanwhile.

I like the prequels, so I'm not going to break a sweat, though.

an attempt to make yourself feel superior or whatever your motivation is.

My motivation is to the talk about stuff and share my opinions. The same as the rest of you. What you're saying is that my opinions don't deserve to be heard because you disagree with them.

This is the fifth thread in a week I've been enjoying until I saw Smitty post something argumentative and negative. I'm pretty sure I met you at some meet in London once, you seemed like a nice enough chap. What the hell happened / why are you like this on the internet?

Blimey, that Old Republic video is amazing! I remember seeing a figurine of a young Yoda in Forbidden Planet years ago before the prequels. Standing on two legs as a young, whatever the fuck he was, face all gnarled with rage and quite muscly for such a little fella. It conjured up all kinds of possibilities as to what the prequels could be like, much like that Old Republic video shows how rich the lore was and how much potential there was.

Then I watched a blue Jamaican stereotype talk about plasma balls after listening to something about a trade embargo followed by Yoda appearing as the head of some kind of accountancy company and made entirely of CGI after having a personality transplant. I still held out hope for the next ones, but they just got worse IMO.

Anyway I still hold out hope for the new ones, which shows just how much I loved the first series as a child. Like a battered wife I'm still hoping things will go back to how they once were.
