Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I actually hate the pod race. I Thinks its boring and way too long. Also I don't really rate duel of the fates. Its just a few guys leaping around waving lightsabres ineffectively. I thought that before watching the red letter review btw.

Also while its going on you have the child vader accidently saving the day in his ship.

Attack of the clone was handicapped by the fact that despite being the middle film of the trilogy they still had to establish everything as if it was the first. Because nothing of consequence happens in TPM apart from finding a kid who was strong in the force. That's it.

I can confirm that Phantom Menace is indeed very very boring. We got as far as Qui Gon and the Jedi council having their boring discussion about the balance of the force and gave up for the night. One of the boys was already asleep and the other was nodding off. So we'll try to finish it tonight but there's not much enthusiasm...

Looking back on the prequels, the similarities to the recent Hobbit trilogy are there.

There's a pretty good 2 hour film underneath all that bloat.

Does anyone have a link for the cut back versions of the prequels, where they were edited into a single film? I think my 5 year old would prefer that!

Thing is, he could have hand waved it easily, like overt Sith power use deforms you, or something. In fact, didn't KotOR do that, until the daft episode 3 lightning reflection scene? Why wasn't Luke, the only other person we've seen fry, deformed by force lightning? Nrgh.

Why even hand wave it?

"Why does the Emperor look different George?"

"Er, cos it was a different film, made in the late 70's. Deal with it"

We finished Phantom Menace last night. The last half hour or so is easily the best part of the film, mainly because there's much less dialogue during all the action. But what there is, is still clunky as hell. Still, it's out of the way now. I may never watch it again.

When it finished one of the boys just said, "Well." And the other one (who fell asleep during the first half of TPM) said, "Do we have to watch the other two?" It's a good question really.

Nah, they absolutely loved the original trilogy. They want to watch those again on the three nights before we go to see the new film, so it kind of leads in seamlessly.

I consider watching the prequels as a kind of rite of passage for them as Star Wars fans. They can share our pain. And they've even said they want to watch the Clone Wars cartoons between AOTC and ROTS, which I seem to remember were better than the films anyway. Although they said that before watching Phantom Menace - they might be less keen now.

Even I wouldn't go that far.

Although I can feel myself falling down the spin-off rabbit-hole. Since my last post I've already ordered Rebels and (to get the total over £20 to get free postage from Amazon) a Lego Star Wars DVD

Now I'm eyeing up the Clone Wars DVDs. I've got the original cartoon ones, but I've never seen any of the CGI ones except the film which I thought was pretty poor. But according to reviews the series is much better than the film (and gets better as it goes along). Is this right? Should I even be considering this or am I going utterly mad?

Don't show them the prequels like they're some event they have be part of. It was shit for us, it'll be shit for them. Don't watch them. Just leave them. They didn't enjoy ep1, take the hint. If they want to seek them out and watch them out of curiosity in later years they fine, but don't force shit films on them.

Seriously give the Clone Wars series a go, its patchy in places (especially the droid/Jar Jar centric episodes, although luckily these aren't so prevalent) but brilliant in others. The three episode arc with the four armed Jedi master is dark and there are numerous other episodes that give good insight into the lives of the Clones.
