Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Anyone remember that time in the early nineties when no-one really talked about Star Wars? It'd been ages since Jedi and the Special Editions were still a glint in Lucas' bionic eye. No toys in the shops, no other merchandising around. B-wings in tatty boxes at jumble sales. Perhaps Ewoks was still on Children's BBC. It was all considered a bit nerdy and lame. Funny to think back to that now.

Not really - my memories of Star Wars in the early '90s is of the metric tonne of amazing (and not-so-amazing) games coming out based on them - X-Wing, Super Star Wars, TIE Fighter, Rebel Assault, Star Wars Arcade, Dark Forces. I wasn't really aware of whether all that was considered cool or not, but as a gamer it seemed like a massive franchise.

Star Wars simply was. It formed part of the cultural substrate of the world when I was a kid. It didn't matter that there weren't any new movies coming out or anything, any more than it would matter that there wasn't a sequel to LotR, or pies.

I think the closest comparison would be the classic Disney movies which still had (have?) an enormous presence despite being variously years to decades old.

Just because there's not much in terms of news, thought of this throwback the other day: Star Wars: Behind the Magic, an interactive CD-Rom no less!

Remember it having deleted footage, which was genuinely exciting at the time, and a quiz. Also spent far longer than necessary testing out weapons on stormtroopers:

Good times.

Ah, I mean just before all that. Perhaps late 80s-91 then. I guess the Thrawn trilogy kickstarted a bunch of EU stuff. I remember searching the local papers for people selling second hand AT-ATs because you couldn't get anything in the shops. Then stuff like Super Star Wars on the SNES came along and people seemed to start talking about it again.

I finally saw the trailer for this on the big screen last week, and my heart rate went through the roof. I told my friend to feel my pulse. He thinks it's awesome that something can still have such an effect in these jaded times. I think I'm going to need medicating on December 18.

Poor Han, he's a pensioner but still wandering around in the clothes he wore back when he was a cool young rebel. There's a scene where they go to the Cantina and all the kids look up from their holophones and laugh at granddad walking in In the space equivalent of the Fonz's outfit.
