Star Wars: The Force Awakens

No, it's based on what they looked like when they 'died', suggesting that Anakin hadn't continued to grow old in the suit into the crusty old man and had, in fact, died looking like he did in the prequels. Daft, I know.

... which makes the decision to insert Hayden Christensen into the scene utter fucking bollocks anyway, because the whole point was, as you say, that they turn into a force ghost at the moment they truly die, but Anakin Skywalker didn't actually die until he'd turned back to the good side. So when he died, he was Sebastian Shaw. By changing it, the beautiful redemption that the entire original trilogy revolves around is dismissed in an instant. Stupid stupid Lucas.

I guess it's one of those things where you realise you done fucked up by getting a dude in his 70s-80s to play a guy you later decide is only in his mid 40s. Just another case of "Holy shit, people got old fast back in ancient times!"* whereas these days, we're all looking fanfuckingfabulous and have barely aged a day since our early 20s, hence it might make more sense to go with Christensen if you're a bit spergy and are bugged by such trivialities, as George pretty much is.

So you openly refer to Star Wars as A New Hope, you're showing your kids the special editions of the original trilogy films and you're letting them watch Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith? What kind of a father are you?

Nope, they know it as star wars, ANH is the convention on this forum. I'm in yank land where torrenting is frowned upon, but if you want to send the despecialized, that's fine. They've only seen the DVD versions.

The machete approach doesn't show TPM. Sorry old man, kids like their glitzy CGI films, so they like the prequels.

They needed to edit in a reaction shot where Luke was all "who the fuck is this guy?" given that he has no idea what his dad looked like in his '20s.

That will pretty much be my girlfriends reaction when she watch Star Wars for the first time at some point this summer. I thought going with the release order would be the only way to go, might not bother with the prequels, and that scene would just make no sense. Lucas probably want people to watch the episodes in order, but I can't imagine her getting beyond Episode II that way.

Edit: Ah. I see, this is the first time I heard of the machete order, still wish you can cut out Episode II though, not sure if she has the patience for fantasy politics.

Oh come off it, they're not that bad. Were they the long-awaited return to a galaxy far, far away that'd we'd been waiting for? No. Were they great films? Not even close. They were mired with problems, focused on the wrong things and some of the acting was godawful, but as throwaway bits of fun, they were fairly entertaining.

...which sounds like a terrible set of reasons to rewatch a film.

I tried the mega-edited 2 hour version of the prequels that's floating about and while it was infinitely better than approximately a gazillion hours of George Lucas spitting in my face that I suffered the first time round, they were still just so boring.

Even the boy gave up and wandered off to play with his toys. Currently working on getting the despecialised editions as my Star Wars renaissance started with the cleaned up VHS versions that pre-dated the special editions, released in the mid-90s.

The original editions aren't hard to find though:

Star Wars

The Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

(or nab them all in one go from eBay)

Yes, they may be poor quality transfers, but as much as kids like their glitzy CGI films, they also couldn't care less about grainy picture quality.

Weird, because it used to just be a scary vagina, didn't it?

I'm sure this all means something but I don't know what it is and I don't want to think about it anymore.

It's about ethics in mafia desert executions.

Tbh even before the prequel trilogy came out I figured he looked more like he was late 50's but really fucked up due to spending half his life sealed in a particularly uncomfortable looking envirosuit with no natural light and quite possibly not even a proper diet.

We started ESB tonight, got about half way. Quite a lot of people were dying, so had to give a kind of director's commentary so my 5 year old could absorb it. We're just going to watch the old trilogy in order, sod mucking about.

Do you honestly think we'll ever see the originals on blu ray? I REALLY want to watch the films again but can't be putting up with all this "Noooo" bollocks.

As some other people have mentioned, you owe it to yourself to "secure" a copy of the Despecialized editions of the original trilogy.

This project is seriously amazing and hats off to the nerds that made it happen! 720p versions of the original unaltered trilogy! Composited together from a plethora of film sources! It's the best version that we'll have until they release a Blu Ray version, if they ever actually do!

A note on the original trilogy.

After watching the Despecialzed edition, I read that actually getting a 35 mm source of the original films is pretty hard!

In preparation for the 1997 Special Editions, Lucasfilm actually recalled all 35 mm film sources of the old versions of the films! So old cinema's that had a film reel had to give them up to the original distributors.

Lucasfilm have also claimed that these 35 mm sources were all destroyed.

Where can I get them from? I did a search but only found articles about the project rather than any download files.

I don't find the additions bad enough to go to the effort of finding and downloading the unaltered ones. Don't get me wrong, some of them are awful (han shooting first, jabba tail step), but many are blink-and-you'll-miss-it. I also think some of you may be surprised how badly the original effects have aged and are different to how you think they look in your head.
