Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Captain Kelsten

... do you?

Probably yeah, his identity is one of the things almost all the spoilers are agreed on:

Apparently he's Luke's son, possibly the one talking in the trailer which might explain the present tense use of father

I really like the idea, but isn't Gwendoline Christie down to play the Chrome Trooper? OR IS THAT WHAT THEY WANT US TO THINK?!

Looking. Glass. Through.

Why would you hire a 6"3 Amazonian goddess to play a shiny goon with a rifle? And why would that goon role require the lightsaber training she was reported to be undertaking?

I'm onto something here lads. I can feel it in me waters.

The voiceover is Hamill:

Supposedly.

Andy Serkis' role hasn't been named either.

He's doing the voice of BB8*

*This is not true

Hadn't heard the reports of lightsabre training but that's intriguing *cue intriguing music*

Captain Phasma is hardly going to be a goon though, even though their name is akin to that of a bad disco DJ. If you're going to go to the trouble of making a stormtrooper chrome, it's not because the outfit designer just happened to be feeling pimp one morning. Of course, Gleeson could be a chrome stormtrooper. Christie might be a Mrs Wookie, and Serkis a bandit Ewok.

nah... I don't buy that rumor atall. plus Hamill has already said he recorded the new dialogue for the trailer.

Reminds me of that "Liam Neeson is definately the Emperor" rumor - pre TPM.

Gleeson is much more likely to be a descendant of:

Obi-wan

It's Luke talking in the trailer, taken from the old audio. According to hamillhimself, he rerecorded the lines for TFA and JJ Abrams who played about and mixed them in as the 'ghost' voice that you can hear subtley hear underneath.

We shouldn't forget that JJ made Star Trek rubbish. Into Darkness was, anyway.

This could be rubbish, too. But the fact part of Star Wars point is re-using lines and shots here and there each movie means JJ had quarter of a film made already. People can/will be apologetic for repeated scenes and themes.

Because introducing Khan and repeating everything from Trek 2 was really/just as meaningful to the Kirk/Spock relationship as the original movie, right guys?

Yeah, I don’t know why everyone’s so excited about Lawrence Kasdan. I mean, he was shit hot in the late seventies when he wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark and Empire Strikes Back. But George Lucas was shit hot in the late seventies as well, and I think most people would agree that he’s fallen off a bit since then. Kasdan’s last three films were Dreamcatcher (i.e. the adaptation of that book Stephen King wrote after he got run over, where aliens live up people’s bums; 30% on Rotten Tomatoes), Darling Companion (a Diane Keaton film about a cute dog; 22% on Rotten Tomatoes), and Hotel Vendome (doesn’t appear to exist in any real sense).

Maybe it’s just me, but I would say George Lucas’ recent track record is actually better than Kasdan’s, I’d watch Attack of the Clones over Dreamcatcher any day of the week, although I’d rather not have to watch either. I just think that people are focusing a bit too much on the early, amazing, stuff he did, and glossing over the decades of mediocrity since then.

Would you rather Lindelof was writing? Who would you guys pick to write a new Star Wars film?

Lindelhof is crap. I have no idea. Who writes decent characters? That's what makes a good Star Wars movie along with the spaceships.

I think it’s difficult to judge writers in Hollywood, as you can’t really gauge their contribution to film in isolation – i.e. was this stupid bit of dialogue something the actor insisted on including, was this scene written in a massive hurry as the location they needed for the scripted sequence fell through at the last minute, is the writer an actual bona fide cretin, etc. I mean, I thought Christopher McQuarrie did a really good job on Edge of Tomorrow and Valkyrie, but then again he also wrote The Tourist, so maybe the other writers on those films did the good bits.

To be honest, I’m not sure the writer would really make all that much difference at all. There will be so many parties involved in a film like this, all with their own input and agendas, that you could probably commission Tommy Wiseau to write a script, and it wouldn’t affect the finished product all that much – some films go into production without much of a script at all, and still turn out OK. I’d still say that Lawrence Kasdan is not exactly a safe pair of hands, but to be honest, even if the Coen Brothers were writing it, I think the end result would rest more with JJ Abrams and the studio.

Can't remember where I heard/read this quote recently: "You can make a bad film from a good script, but you can't make a good film from a bad script."

Although I'm sure there a bunch of examples that contradict that in the action sphere.
