Star Wars: The Force Awakens

A CGI background prop is very different to CGI characters talking in a CGI room with CGI background props.

Definitely - it's just the equivalent of what top Matte artists do, but with the added addition of more depth. Never a problem when used like this at all I think.

I still don't quite understand Peter Jackson's logic for having that god-awful CGI orc thing when he'd already done a perfectly respectable physical outfit....ghastly stuff, although that's not really the worst problem with those films I guess.

So much better than the first trailer. So, so, so much better.

I hope they've still got the broadsword lightsabre in the film, complete with energy beam crossguard which seems specifically designed to sever fingers. That shit was hilarious.

Who says the Star Destroyer is CGI anyway, it could quite easily be a prop that's been filmed and composited into the scene.

Wouldn't that still make it CGI?

I'm not having a go at the shot, far from it, and again, I fully agree about the use of real objects. Abrams made some really good points about the value of having real things in the scene when the actors are doing their scenes during the panel yesterday.

Only just caught up with teaser #2... love it, very very excited now.

The only problem is my slightly cynical outlook on these sequels (that I'd been harbouring to protect myself) has somewhat crumbled and now I dare to believe.

Utter joy or utter disappointment now await.

Eh, semantics.

It's the atmospheric perspective that gives illusion of scale/distance, they could use anything so long as it was appropriately faded. In this case cg is just easier and doesnt have any inherent drawback.

I will say that I do like the rare occasion where matte backdrops are used that still retain a slight hand-painted quality, although I dont think that'd be appropriate here.

Yeah, you could tell from the trailer that there are proper sets, way less green screen, there's practical FX and models everywhere... it's great.

You're thinking of the warehouse from the end of Raiders, aren't you?

It's not Tatooine...

Yeah, just read that in the SW Battlefront thread. I'll spoiler the snippet from the announcement, just in case you don't want to see

"Battlefront" will also include a free downloadable level available two weeks before "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters Dec. 18. It's set on Jakku, the battle-scarred desert planet glimpsed in "Force Awakens" teasers. The expansion, dubbed "Battle of Jakku," will explore the moment following "Return of the Jedi" when the New Republic confronted Imperial holdouts on the previously unseen Outer Rim enclave.

Bollocks to spoilers. Why would you come into this thread about an upcoming movie if you didnt want any info on it.

btw. when this is released I'm going to snap my episode 1-3 blurays in half or maybe burn them on a small pyre in a forest.

I dunno, you could still talk about it without knowing specific details. That's what everyone managed to do with the trailer, right?

Snap your 1-3 blu rays in half now and post the picture - you won't be watching them between now and December 18th.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I've only just spotted the crashed x-wing in the foreground, when we can see the distant remains of Star Destroyer!

Brilliant trailer, just the right amount of tease.

Are we openly discussing the voice over? I'll spoiler it just in case, I know some people in here are really sensitive about this shit:

So The Shiznit tweeted last night that he thinks the voice over is Domhnall Gleeson. I assumed it was Hamill, because even though it doesn't immediately sound like him, it certainly does towards the end of his monologue and obviously the things he's saying and the images we see tie in with it being Luke talking.

However, it doesn't actually sound like Hamill and then, as people have mentioned, he refers to his father in the present tense. So, is is Domhnall Gleeson and he's the son of Luke? Potentially with Daisy Ridley as his sister?

Don't tell me if you know due to the script leak, but I'm pretty sure that the new teaser is designed to throw us off a bit and it's not as obvious as the images linked with the voice over would suggest.

Also, whilst I'm not disagreeing with the sentiments, it is amusing how everyone is really excited about the use of puppets and actual physical props and engineering in this film (some saying that this alone will somehow magically just make it better than the prequels' apparent over-reliance on CGI) but the one shot from the new teaser that's really got everyone's juices flowing is the huge, mega CGI shot of the Star Destroyer.

Tis beautiful though.

You are right the voice does sound a bit off... but It is Luke for sure. And its his lost lightsaber from ESB that is handed to Leia (i assume its leia as thats the shot that appears when he refers to his sister). Its also wierdly mysterious that luke refers to his father in the present tense.

The voice sounds pretty synthesised like they have tried to make his voice sound younger.

BIG POTENTIAL SPOILER....

And if you look at some of the cast spoilers on the net, a couple mention casting for part of young luke. so that sounds like they are going to recon the narrative to set up the new one maybe - which i'm not sure will go down too well.

Can you not give a heads up that thats a potentially massive plot spoiler outside of the spoiler section of your post?

Luke refers to him in present tense because when Anakin's body died his spirit endured and so he still exists And still has his strong connection to the force.

Stu how do you judge what is a spoiler. I see you spoilered the name of the desert planet earlier, yet it's named EA dlc and has been discussed by Abrams in a panel discussion. If people are so adamant not to have any information they should just avoid open discussion in it. Just ridiculous.
