Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This article looks to be pretty old (written around 1996 from what I can gather) but it does a great job in a light-hearted way of explaining why Return of the Jedi is in fact a pretty poor film, albeit with some great moments:

50 REASONS WHY RETURN OF THE JEDI SUCKS

I've always loved RotJ (I was ten years old and already a huge Star Wars fanatic when it came out, so there was never any chance of me not loving it really) and I still love it now, even after reading this article and grudgingly acknowledging how many problems the film had. But I guess I'm really posting this to reassure people (myself included) that The Force Awakens doesn't have to be the most perfect film of all time for it to be a satisfying and welcome next chapter in the saga; it just needs to get the basics right and not be as bad as any of the prequels. I'm certain that JJ Abrams will manage that, and even if the new film doesn't quite match Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back for sheer cinematic perfection, I reckon there's every chance it will at least be a better film than Return of the Jedi - and if it is, it won't matter that I'm now 42 instead of ten. I'll love it.

1996 sounds about right - I had the magazine this article came from. Still got it somewhere, I think. A really handy look at Jedi, which - despite moments of brilliance - shouldn't be enshrined as beyond criticism just because it's not one of the prequels.

Edit: The original article had a '10 reasons why Return of the Jedi is awesome' box-out counterpoint. If I ever see the magazine again, I'll post it, but off the top of my head it included the scenes with the Emperor, the space-bound side of the Battle of Endor, and the tense moments of the walk the plank scene. Struggling to think of another 7...

Jedi is proper emosh man. When Vader apologises to Luke for being such a shit Dad all these years. And you can see Luke wants to be like 'yeah, you weren't that good a Dad to be fair. What was all that chopping my hand off business all about??'. But he doesn't say anything, he just rubs him on the back and they go get a Calippo apiece. Been a while since I seen it, but that scene is a fave.

In the Special Edition, Lucas added digital balloons and a longer line for the Calippos. Ruined it.

It's symptomatic of how unhealthy Lucas got with tweaking every little detail, but if it was in the original it wouldn't bother me. The emperor was always campy and OTT, and I can imagine him being pretty bummed out at his situation.

It's terrible, but not memorably so given we see Hayden 5 minutes later.

Its not the emperor who says it. Actually wonder I g if you've seen the blu-ray version of Jedi. Its a scene-ruining change, seemingly done specifically as a fuck you to people who didn't like the NOOOO in Sith.

Even a massive SW fanny like me doesn't like that change, the scene was otherwise perfection. Vader doesn't waste a word throughout any of the original films, but instead of quietly wrestling with decades (2?) of absolute bitterness* and obedience versus his flesh and blood, we have him telegraphing his intent to old Palps with the hammiest line ever. I could JUST about stomach it from fresh off the burns unit Anakin in Ep 3, but not after he's had years of anger fueling him. But yeah, the defining moment in the life of Vader** completely ruined.

*even if you ignore the prequels and just take Vader for how he presents - a big bloke who you shouldn't fuck with - the NOOOO is still out of character.

**and also potentially fulfilling the prophecy, if you believe it was Anakin offing Palps, rather than Luke being the chosen one and managing to turn Vader back to the light, resulting in Sith destruction
