Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Well, bollocks. Not my eyes to blame - cheers brain, with your generally wonky memory, complemented by applying lightsabre colour logic to blasters. Thanks for keeping me right there folks. Good excuse to watch the first assault on the Deathstar on our new projector...

Potential leak summary. Much of it covers rumours that have been going around for a while, but there's a fair chunk of new stuff. Could be bullshit someone is having fun with based on the rumours but it's very plausible and sounds fantastic. There's no third act stuff and a few early reveals are only teased and talked around.

I love the speculation about the identity of Max Von Sydow's character.

It's EU that all the clones go on to be storm troopers, the best of which go on to form the 501st, which is Vader's lot. Those are the "entire legion of my best troops" getting taken out by Ewoks.

I don't remember the cloning facilities getting taken out, but it's definitely mentioned that STs are, generally clones. May not be the original batch, and they're supplemented with ordinary folks. Officers are all people who came up through the Academy. Mind, that Lucas didn't* dub over the voices of the STs idly chatting while Ben takes out the tractor beam points to numbers being made up with non-clones.

To be honest though, I've no idea what's canon any more.

*I haven't seen the Blu Ray edition, even I can't stomach the thought of NOOOOOOO getting added to one of the best scenes out of any of these films.

The Battlefront 2 campaign, in which you play as one of the 501st, has a mission where you as Stormtroopers take out the cloning facilities on Kamino along with a group of clones that have somehow not followed order 66.

The problem with clones is that all think in the same way, so you don't get wildcard moments of individual inspiration like this:

clumsy-trooper.gif

I'll tell you the precise moment when I knew George Lucas had lost all sense as a film-maker:

In Episode II Attack of the Clones, Jango Fett bangs his head on the door frame of his ship. It's just a cute reference to the stormtrooper gaffe in Episode IV. However, as Lucas explained at the time, it also reinforces the idea that stormtroopers in Ep IV are still the clonetroopers who were based on Jango, and Jango's doorframe clumsiness is a genetic trait.

That's not the moment when I knew George Lucas had lost the plot. The moment was a couple of years later... when he added a loud obvious CLONK noise to the Episode IV stormtrooper banging his head so that it becomes a diagetic element of the scene, meaning it becomes "canon" and officially ties in to Jango's clumsiness.

I will say, though, that the Max Von Sydow character suggestion raises more questions than answers for me. I'm stumped.

The only real suggestion floating around so far is Boba Fett. He almost died on Tatooine, appeared in the prequels, everyone loves him, he'd assumedly know what all the old artifacts are and maybe have the money and connections to get them.

Another interesting idea was that he might be a failed/mangled clone of Anakin or the Emperor.

Well yeah, if the Sarlacc was dangerous he wouldn't have fallen into it and escaped twice.

I guess he'd know more about the war and the artifacts of it by virtue of having been there? Most people in this universe will live out their entire lives on one planet. It seems unlikely many people would have as much knowledge about the war as someone who was actually there for a fair bit of it.

I normally don't care for spoilers but my expectations for this are so amazingly low, I don't really care and to be honest, that does actually sound like it could be an interesting movie.

My only one thing I'm slightly wary of is the possibility that

Serkis' character is some sort of alien Sith that trained Palpatine and has different motives to the Empire

It's not necessarily an idea I dislike, I just think that if this is true, it may have been hinted upon in the previous six movies, I'm not sure if such a big announcement and change to the overall storyline 'works' introduced this late in a tale...

Certainly more interested than I was though.

In fact, Serkis should be playing Dark side Jar Jar as the overall leader of all Sith, that would be a lol.

Hang on, Boba Fett

survived the sarlacc!? Wtf? Is that supposed to be canon!? Ridiculous!!

Well,

In the Jedi DVD commentary Lucas says he regrets not putting in a shot indicating he survived, given how popular the character became. And he survived in the EU.
