Shame. I watched ANH tonight on DVD thinking a lot of the shit and random background crap Lucas added into the BRs wasn't in but unfortunately it was.

Wonder what a VHS to DVD conversion looks like, then I can watch the OT in its proper glory even if the quality sufrees.

Just buy the 2006 DVDs. They include the original OT versions on the second disc. They are fairly poor quality non-anamorphic Laserdisc transfers but would be easier than faffing around with even poorer quality VHS tapes.

Noto hype.

I'm pretty sure I've read at some point that part of the handover deal was that Disney can't release the untouched OT, or that Fox still retains distribution rights on them.

Yeah, Fox own the distribution rights of the first film forever and aren't dumb enough to give it up for anything so it's going to be a sticking point.

People have too much of a fetish for the original cut. Lucas did a lot of dumb stuff with the special editions, yes. Greedo shooting first, the Mos Eisely Jabba scene, Hayden at the end of 'Jedi etc.

But in general the SFX additions were huge improvements. I want the cut that has the expanded Mos Eisley enviornment, the more elaborate Death Star explosion, the fully realised Cloud city...but none of the bullshit.

Harmy's despecialised editions are boss so you're totally invalid.

Doesn't seem consistent with how the beam comes out of a sabre though. Don't they all just throw a beam straight out of an emitter tube thing? That has three beams coming out of a single tube in different directions, whereas the one in the movie has a tube for each beam.

maybe there are two small tubes for the hilt.

Or maybe the midichlorians made it go three ways.

Well, I thought the trailer was utterly amazing, the best teaser I have ever seen. Let's not forget though that the phantom menace trailer is utterly amazing and makes it look like the best film ever made.

As for Episode 3, I watched it last night and I still think it's amazing. It's so much better than the other two.

I like that the sabre is as rough as fuck, with a sound a lot rougher than the usual ignite sound. Maybe the two sections coming off are because they lacked the skills to build a proper lightsaber and it's a bodge job, held together with duct tape and chewing gum?

Agreed, unless you wanted to really push a 'fucking magnets' argument.

The thing I do like about that redesign compared to the trailer version, though, is the sweeping curve the beam makes from the hilt up to the blade proper, it really emphasizes the Claymore aspect of it, that it'd have a hefty blade with a wide base.

They could've probably got the same kind of shape going on by just extending the hilt up and around, though, without using a beam. It'd still have the same silhouette.

But yeah, I'm warming to the idea that it's a bodge job though. It'd explaining the energy arcing around it.

edit:

Also, my brain is REALLY struggling with the idea that the camera rolls, not the Falcon. :omg:

It's done nothing for me at all. Not in a bad way, I'm still looking forward to the film. It's just, I feel nothing. It's quite possible it's just because we were burned so badly by the prequels. I just still feel like we know nothing about it - nothing more than we did, anyway. Looking forward to seeing the whole thing and deciding then if it's any good. I just don't feel like what we've seen so far is worth having an opinion on.

Well, it is just a teaser. There's not much to get excited about other than the fact that a new Star Wars movie is actively in production (and being made by people who might be able to make a good job of it). That's really all you can do with a sequence of context-free shots.
