Star Wars: The Force Awakens

All the buzz got me wanting to watch the films so I've just got my tea and stuck A New Hope on.

:Edit:

First time I've seen te BR edits. What's with all the shit CGI'd robots and giraffe looking aliens. The worst is the one that walks across the screen just before Obi Wan uses the force on the Storm Trooper

Hasn't that been in since the 97 editions? I've never seen the original edits as I'm too young and must admit to not caring all that much as I have no childhood affinity to them. But that stupid brachiosaurus thing walking in front of the camera really annoys me. It's so pointlessly stupidly shit I can't even begin to comprehend why it was thought necessary. The stupid ones in the background, fine. I don't like them either as they're jarring, but I can see how Lucas might have always wanted that stuff in the films. But a great big dinosaur obscuring the entire screen? Just... ffs.

Tbh I haven't watched them in a long time I couldn't remember if they were in the late 90s edit or not. Still shit though. Just like the Solo/Jabba meeting in the hanger (which i know was added in). Did he originally leave that out cause it was hard to do with puppets? He should have left it out completely, the CGI is awful and it completely spoils the mistery of who Jabba is, as he's mentioned in both Hope and Empire. They're too buddy buddy in that scene that you don't really get the scense that Jabba is some evil bad guy not to cross.

There are two sets of additions, the 1997 ones and the 2004 ones. The Jabba scene filmed for new hope was done with a man as at the time George envisioned Jabba as human, but it was cut. That's why Han walks behind him and steps awkwardly on his tail.

Given ILM's pedigree, I find most of the 'revisions' to the original films to have been handled in such a cack handed, amateurish, 'My first Studio Max efforts' way that it makes me cringe. The super human neck breaking shift in Han's head during the Greedo scene, the godawful tail step and, oh god, the weird alien singer aboard Jabba's barge. Fuck right off, thank you very much.

They looked great to me at the time (seeing the films for the first time as a 15 year old), even on a big cinema screen. Nothing dates faster than special effects though, especially CGI.

Yeah but, Jurassic Park. The way Lucas was going on at the time made it sound like the effects would have the same level of sophistication as JP and Terminator 2. In the end, they were about on a par with American Werewolf in Paris.

Plus for the recent BR box set, they spent time adding in unnecessary crap. They could have spent that time fixing the dodgy CGI. To me it makes the film seem even more dated than it is. Even though before all the added shit it still held up pretty well.

The annoying thing is that to my mind the space battle above Endor in ROTJ is still the most amazing visual thing in any of the films. No fucking about with CGI or nothing - it just looks fucking incredible still. I got completely and utterly confused at the space battle in the Revenge of the SIth at the beginning - god knows what was going on in that!

Alot of the effects were completed inside ILM by a group that called themselves "Rebel Unit". they were pioneering creating effects on domestic macs and such - as opposed to the big mega expensive CGI workstations that were traditionally used.

they set out to prove that they could get big budget effects on normal equipment. So you aren't far off the mark.

the hilarious thing is Lucas charged FOX 20 million for them - and they properly cost him a tiny fraction of that to produce.

Yeah, fucking Jedi up so much was unforgivable in my eyes. I didn't mind too much with A New Hope apart from Han not shooting first (the tail stepping doesn't bother me at all) and think Empire Strikes Back is very well preserved with what was added in that.

But, adding a shit song and dance number at the beginning of Jedi in Jaba's palace was terrible and why change the tune at the end during the Ewok celebration? OK, a lot of folks didn't like the Ewoks at all (I love them, btw) and thought the music was bad anyway (I liked this as well), so why change it to a different piece (that I now think is shit) that folks still don't like simply because the Ewoks are still in it?

Oh and swapping out Sebastion Shaw for Hayden whatsisface at the end was downright stupid and nonsensical. Dead Obi Wan still looked like Alec Guiness at the time of Obi Wans death, so dead Anakin Skywalker should look like Sebastion Shaw at the time of Anakins death.

Even luke should be all, 'wtf is he?' when looking at them at the end.

I can't find the Blu-Ray set of all six anywhere for a decent second hand price, and I'm not buying the two individual ones without the extra disc with all the cool extras on it. Does anyone know if there's a torrent of the extras at decent quality anywhere? Then I could stick with the prequel DVDs I have and buy the OT BluRay set.

I think there was some half assed reason like his Jedi ghost is from when he was last a good guy as after that he was Sith. Nonsense.

That's how I took it but it was still stupid. Just dont know why he thought it was a good idea to put in these stupid unnecessary changes.

One of the worst is the Kraut Dragon call. It sounds so ridiculous and how would he make that sound and so load? I was full on preparing myself for the Cantina Band to be playing a different song too but luckily that didn't happen.

my prediction...(getting in early)

"That boy is our last hope."

"No.There is another.."

...will be significant and a new way to twist what we think we already know...Also a good way to link the new films with the old....

Jump cut to Stifler dicking around in LA while a Sum 41 song plays.

Sharrup about the crappy additions - I was really close to watching the original trilogy again for the first time in years having been put off completely by the prequels.

Now I don't think I can face it after being reminded about all that rubbish CGI.

Didnt the original versions have a DVD release?

Yup, but they're pretty terrible in their own way. They're straight rips of the Laser Disc releases, in all their stereo, non-anamorphic 4:3 letterboxed glory. I'm kind of hoping that Disney see fit to release a cleaned up, remastered but otherwise untouched version on Blu-Ray.

Not even a possibility until after 2020 with all except ANH, which is owned by Fox for the duration I thought? Pretty sure someone here posted that.
