Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

What is it:

- First Person Slasher

- With a Multiplayer focus

(A competitive multiplayer FPS).

“You have a sword and you want to hurt some people.”

- Basic concept of the game.

And it works on that level but there is so much depth to the combat that you can become a master swordsman over time.

The game is skill-based and controls like a FPS, but instead of guns and grenades, players are given swords, shields, maces, battleaxes and longbows. Set in a fictional yet gritty and realistic world, players will fight in fast paced online battles besieging castles, raiding medieval villages and fighting for glory in the arena with up to 32 players.

Why did we make it?

“To create the best melee combat game ever.”

We wanted to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield. To accomplish this we drew on our inspiration from epic swordfighting movies such as 300, Gladiator and Braveheart. We seek to bring the chaos, intensity and epicness that those movies deliver to the hands of a gamer.

We were also disappointed with melee in other games. We didn’t want to be locked in to a canned animation, see damage numbers above enemies heads or have quicktime sequences. We wanted the player to be in control and have the ability to adjust his attack in real time with the mouse.

Why this is significant:

You control the action. Not like assassins creed where you press one button to do a triple backflip and kill 5 guys, in Chivalry you individually select each action that your character performs and always retain full control. This allows the player to perform expert level manuevures, like ducking under or jumping over his opponents strike, but only if the player himself is good enough.

so we dont have to spam up the steam thread talking about chivalry!!

I found that first video hysterically funny. All the sounds are great, but what caps it off is the blue knight from 2:57 who is taking on the fucking world and looking like an unstoppable tank of a man before he is beheaded in the blink of an eye. The timing on it is so perfect. Love it.

Here is a giantbomb quick look:

Does look really good fun this, only thing stopping me is the winter onslaught of AAA titles.

If it's a proper castle storm attack and defend deal i'm in.

Theres a few modes, deathmatch, TDM, KOTH, CTF, etc, but theres an objective mode too where you do indeed have to storm castles, or kill the kings family, hell one objective is literally 'kill 40 filthy peasants'

To give you an example Dave on one Team Objective map as the attackers it starts off with 'Kill the peasants' So you kill the peasants and they're all NPCs running around screaming. The other team is trying to stop you and you're slaying peasant scum and burning their huts. You finish the first round and you then have to escort a cart to the castle doors. When at the castle doors you are bashing the doors down and the other team's desperately trying to stop you. If you get through you then have to try and slay the king and his servants etc to wipe out the royal family.

That's just one example of a Team Objective map and they vary on each map though generally it's burn stuff, kill stuff, storm castles :D

With new content coming as well such as Duel modes in the future and the various game types already available the game will hopefully have a lot of life in it :) It's a bit low budget but most importantly it's fun, it doesn't rely on a carrot on a stick mentality (it does have some progression but it's not really that much) and you'll never get bored of chopping some mother fuckers head off. Chasing archers in this game is one of my favourite things, the way they try to peg it after they realise they missed with their last arrow

I love the premise but how exactly is the combat different to any other first person melee games? That blurb in the first post alluded to full control, those vids just make it look like you run about clicking the mouse and that's it.

Well duh, but in the first post the quote mentions no canned animations. It all looked like canned animations. They talk about full control; I'm asking for someone to expand and explain that for me.

Mr woo looks like he knows a bit about it. <stares>

I was being facetious, apologies. I get you.

My hands already knackered on the training, fun mind.

It's about timing and getting your moves right. You have three basic moves - horizontal slash, downwards slash and stab. You also have shield bash and kick. You also have different 'special' moves for each class - for example a man at war can dodge, a Vanguard can run and do a leap attack etc. Each weapon also has different lengths and timing is very much an essential part of the combat. You can also do feints and combo moves into each other. You need full control as timing is very important to the combat in trying to outwit your opponent into making a wrong move. The animations themselves are certainly the same, just that full control comes from how you can combine them really. Rather than one button = do loads of fancy moves.

I should point out that the first video is me and I'm fucking useless at it. It's glorious fun though ^_^

It's brilliant. I've had to customise the controls though. mouse wheel forward and backward for alternate attacks? I think not. I can't move my fingers that quick.

Last night we were unable to get into any games. Some problem with Steam apparently so we ended up playing Borderlands.

I'm in the process of configuring a PS3 navigation controller to make life easier so I can feint an attack by clicking the thumbstick and dodge (I like the man-at-arms class) using L2. Can't configure the deadzone on the stick at the moment though which is a problem.

Such a good game, objective mode is great stuff.

The melee system isn't as 'analog' as something like Mount and Blade, but this is actually a good thing, as this game isn't trying to be that kind of semi-simulator type of game. Instead it's going for what I would call 'movie realism'. Any more complexity would bog the game down. Instead, the basic elements are simple enough for anyone to get a hang of, while there's plenty of depth in the combat system once you have a hang of it. It's very tactile and tacitcal! All about reading your opponent, judging when to block or parry, when to kick, when to swing, and which type of swing to use.

It feels like a fighting game in that respect, maybe a boxing game. You have only a handful of techniques and the skill is in using them tactically, rather than being able to use them, as in something like M&B.

I was playing this over the weekend in between finishing off Dishonored and had some great fun, i've been looking for something i can dip into for 30 mins or so and this seems to fit the bill.

One-on-ones are genuinely tactical but if you get ganged up on things quickly go south. I have a few niggles with it, mainly the flow of games, respawning etc but i'm hoping these get fixed with a patch. It also wiped my weekend progress out when i installed it at work, i'd unlocked a few of the weapons so i'll have to start again.

There never seems to be any CTF listed for me is this the case for others?

Your progress wasn't wiped - for some reason the unlock progress is saved locally (and there's no steam cloud support). I would assume you can transfer your save?

Yeah i thought respawns were way too fast too, expecially in objective mode. When you get the battering ram up to the door on that oen map for instance, the enemy respawns so damn fast that its extremely hard to get any firther cause their spawn is right behind the door more or less.

Yeah that was fuckin hilarious  It always cracks me up without fail when you're getting into a good duel and then out of nowhere 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!' and either your head or your opponents head comes off. Or sometimes both  I think every single one of us said 'sorry' for TKing as well :D

I'm actually pretty good at not tking now! Just stand back a bit and look intimidating and you help your teammate by forcing the player to think about you, without having to risk taking off someone's arm. I think I only had one or two in that game

The bit where a whole load of us were pushing the ram and screaming only to be hit by a projectile from a catapult was rather amusing.
