Super Mario Sunshine is 10 Years old

I've never heard about any add-ons to make the Gamecube 3D, but I did read at some point that the Cube is actually capable of stereoscopic 3D. However, although Luigi's Mansion had it working at one point, it was dropped just as quietly as it was announced as nobody had 3D tellies back then - hell, did anyone even have a HDTV at that point?

Yeah i remember the 3D thing hugely, all because of this image.

600full-super-mario-sunshine-screenshot.jpg

But Mario Sunshine was never developed to be 3D. Luigis Mansion was tested with basically a screen you added to your Gamecube, Making it a portable 3D gamecube but the screens back then were too expensive even for such a small size.

Hmm ill take your word for it. I'm sure i read a interview saying they had been testing mario sunshine with the 3d screen though.

edit: yeah must have been luigi mansion. this interview supports what your saying.

Iwata: To go back a little further, the Nintendo GameCube system actually had 3D-compatible circuitry built in.

Itoi: Huh?

Iwata: It had the potential for such functions.

Itoi: Nintendo GameCube did? And all the Nintendo GameCubes systems around the world?

Iwata: Yeah. If you fit it with a certain accessory, it could display 3D images.

Itoi: What a secret!

Iwata: Nintendo GameCube was released in 2001, exactly ten years ago. We’d been thinking about 3D for a long time even back then.

Itoi: Why didn’t anyone ever know?

Iwata: The liquid crystal for it was still expensive. Simply put, Nintendo GameCube could display 3D images if you attached a special LCD, but that special liquid crystal was really expensive back then.

Itoi: Yeah, we’re talking about ten years ago.

Iwata: We couldn’t have done it without selling it for a price far above that of the Nintendo GameCube system, itself! We already had a game for it, though—Luigi’s Mansion, simultaneously released with Nintendo GameCube.

Itoi: The one in which Luigi shoulders a vacuum cleaner?

Iwata: Yeah, that one. We had a functional version of that in 3D.

Itoi: That was 3D?

Miyamoto: It would jump out at you pretty nicely.

Iwata: Even without special glasses, the 3D looked pretty good. But we considered how much the liquid crystal would cost, and it was just too expensive. We figured the market just wasn’t there for it.

Itoi: So you gave up. Whew! And now you’ve done it. I see! You never give up!

Iwata: Yeah. We never give up. (laughs)

The camera in sms was awkward but once you mastered controlling it yourself with the c it was awesome. I think that was the whole idea. Ferris wheel wasnt a problem to me.

Loved this game, but some levels felt a bit....out of place or shoehorned together. Best level was thr theme park and the docks.

Last boss battle still looks awesome to this day, hence the stuttering framerate. Was too easy for the final boss though!

Water physics and effects on the cube were second to none. Bit of magic missing from the wii too.

I gave this a play over the weekend and was shocked at how bad the camera is. Everyone always moaned about the camera being a bit crap but i don't remember it being this bad, in a lot of ways its worse than Mario 64 which i feel for the most part works pretty well. The main problem is you are in full control of the camera at all times unlike Mario 64 which often put the camera on rails in tight sections and gave you limited control. It becomes a huge pain at times because a lot of the levels have small compact sections meaning all you get to see is a shadow through the wall.

Yoshi not being able to touch water is a huge frustration, especially as he is required to do long jumps over water at various points and even getting him can be a bit annoying.

Im also finding the controls to be a bit wooly, but that may be down to my wave bird as i was noticing mario was not jumping as quickly as i was pressing the button. I also remember the game looking great, but through the Wii it didn't look too hot which was a bit of a shame but that may be due to the Wiis crap video output. Im slightly disappointed to be honest as it wasn't quite how i remembered it.

Bringing this back from the dead due to the cane and rinse podcast special about said game....

Anyhoo, i love this game - it is the only 'retro' thing i own, my original JP copy of the game and a wavebird and i simply have to play it again - picking up a GC from the MM to do so!

I was part of the Edge forum debacle, i even got a ban from ste and as someone mentioned in the end the Edge review was really good - fun times!!

A quick question for those in the know, what is the PAL conversion like - my kids love a bit of mario so i am going to pick up this and some other games for them?

Anyhooo - have a listen to the cane and rinse podcast on this, only half way through it but it brought the game flooding back to me and inspired me to play it again, it really is one of my fave games ever let alone mario games :o

Yeah, I'm halfway through the Cane and Rinse podcast. I loved this at the time, and didn't really get the frustrations that a lot of people talk about, even on Yoshi's Fruit Adventure. Maybe I just had more patience then. Haven't played it since, but looking at videos it seems to have held up rather well, at least graphically.

PAL version was a full 60hz conversion I believe.

What happened? I honestly can't remember.

I do remember however, boasting on Habbo Hotel about getting all 150 (?) shines and nobody believing me. My favourite Mario game too! it just had a nice feel to it, especially the hub. Donning your shades and Hawaiian shirt, climbing up the Delfino Bell Tower, kicking fruit around...aah. :)

There was a 'leak' about the score, 7 i think they said...

We all went bat shit mental, Ste got all pissy (shock avec horror) and i got banned, i only got back on as i was mid trades - sheriff ste didnt let people back on!

So anyhoo, i soft modded my wii to play my original jp version - it didnt work, well the soft mod does just when you launch the game it just goes to a black screen :(

Luckily i had a back up plan, i ordered a PAL version from ebay - went around the second hand shops and cash converters locally and noone had one :o

Ebay one came today, it looks horrible as wii is on composhite on an LCD but little one has been playing and loving it!

I am >< close to ordering a GC component lead and ntsc GC even given the shocking price, i loved my GC and really never should have sold it - esp as i had a Saurian RGB and a composite lead for it :s

Really looking forward to another play through on this, i loved it - i dont recall having any real issues with the camera and it ran M64 pretty close for me, will be leisurely playing it as wii is all setup in the bedroom so will be for times when there is other crap on the telly rather than a dedicated run through!

Did you try Dios Mios lite and putting the game .iso into the games folder on the SD card? The GC backup software is really, really finicky when it comes to USB hard drives and slow SD cards.

Why not get a Wii and Wii component cable?

I have one, i picked up PAL sunshine but wanted to play my JP one - i have never heard the story before, maybe thats why people dont like it with the text i have seen so far ;)

I was running off the original disc, not looked at running from SD but may do...

Why not download "Dolphin" for your PC? Pop your import or PAL disc in the drive and play it from there, pretty sure that the emu runs disc based games and it does an amazing job on the graphics :)

Is this on mac, not sure about it tbh - i want to play it on original hardware really as adds to the experience, i could have an excuse to pick up a spice gc too....

Shimmy, you mention that you've softmodded the Wii, but are you trying to just launch the GC game from the disc channel as normal, or loading up an app first? Have a look at this guide and see if there's anything you've missed or perhaps want to add to your setup - http://gwht.wikidot.com/

Also, Dolphin doesn't run from original discs, there are only certain models of drive that will even read them.

The Edge review was rather critical but the score was 9, as I recall. The largest disconnect between review and score in the whole of Edge history as far as I'm concerned. Edge has often indicated scores ought to be dropped but you would never predict the score they gave it from the text wot they wrote. Go figure.

3D mario games are in such a league of their own. For me, Sunshine didn't come close to 64 or Galaxy. But still incredible. And aside from Skies of Arcadia Legends, it's one of the only reasons to hang onto a gamecube/wii (everything else has been re-released in some form)

Bingo, despite the mixed feelings (mainly the blue coins is what did my head in, personally) and not being close to what came before and after, it's still miles ahead of a lot of stuff, the 'New' series, too.
