Routine - Space Based Horror Title

I jumped out my skin when the video first cut to speed things up. I'm such a wuss :(

Same. I remember being terrified watching the Amnesia gameplay trailer, but this one is scarier. The end had me recoiling.

I know I shouldn't play these games but that fear is what draws me in. I know I shouldn't but it feels sooo good!

I think some of the coverage so far said it's rogue-like? So presumably buttons stay pressed, info stays available, doors stay open etc. I imagine this might mean you respawn as a 'new' character at one point on the station but because the enemies and situations are emergent, it's a different experience each 'existence' but the world remains constant.

I'm totally just making this up from snippets of info. Is it obvious?

I am fairly sure that the brevity of the game and the permadeath means that buttons don't stay pressed at all. They've mentioned randomising a lot of the elements so each new run will be an unknown, and even though it seems like the objectives will stay the same in each run how you get around will be different. Dead will mean dead and then you try it again. Works for me.

Probably worth being aware that Rogue features none of the above, and while some rogue-likes follow that structure, they're actually quite far from 'true' rogue-likes (which would instead mix permadeath with brand new, randomly-generated levels and no retention between characters beyond your own ability to learn how things work). So that wouldn't necessarily follow.

Pity I won't be able to play it due to being a massive wuss, as it looks amazing.

Yeah that actually does sound really good. My flatmate is saving up for an Oculus Rift. I'm looking forward to stealing it and shaving ten or twelve years off my life with this.

I haven't got a clue mate. It sounded like Demon's Souls - I've played that for a few hours so feel completely qualified to comment. Possibly more so than the devs.

I genuinely feel we're on a cusp, here. I don't believe it's sensationalist to suggest that devices like the Rift (because you can she sure it won't be the only VR headset to appear in the next few years) will fundamentally change the landscape of videogames. That when paired with titles like Routine, we're looking at entirely new kinds of experiences, levels of immersion simply impossible when staring at a TV in your living room from your sofa.

I think the next generation of consoles are fighting a losing battle.

"But… we have one section of the game, which is shown at the end of the trailer, the sewers, and that’s interesting because there’s almost no story progression down there. There’s no links to go down there, there are warnings to say to the player not to go down there, there are visual warnings. But it leads to that ‘curiosity killed the cat’ thing."

How many of you bastards are going to go down in to the basement sewers anyway? Come on, hands up.

I wish it had a better name. On and off through the years I've thought about this game. I really love the look of it. But, I always forget what the hell it was called and thus it takes me bloody ages to search anything about it and remind myself that this was a 'thing'.

Be nice if it actually came out though.

You have to give these guys credit though, they basically had a game about ready to release - after a massive 5 years - but knew it just wasn't up to par. Most companies would just release it anyway and hope to get something from it. Instead they went back to the drawing board and this is the version that addresses all the problems they had. The statement says they had to shelve it for years as it became a part time project, whilst they worked other jobs to survive. To me it sounds like with their new partnership and a clear vision of the mistakes they made the first time around makes this promising, although with such a small team I still imagine it will be a few years out. Digging the videos!
