Xbox One Console Thread

Yeah, thanks for making it a welcoming thread. Oh I forgot, this has fallen into the Rllmuk trap of big threads becoming built around a clique that dominates them.

I pledge my allegiance to Microsoft. There, can it be a normal exchange now?

And don't bother with the old man rubbish. The console doesn't communicate this stuff to you. There is no video that pops up when you use the dvr for the first time telling you how to use it - if there was I would have played close attention to it.

The only indication you get is that you record the last 30 seconds by saying Xbox record that. That's in one of the windows. That's the only bit of instruction available.

The same applies elsewhere. Some tip dialog boxes or tutorials videos on the dash would banish any confusion.

Sorry man, I didn't mean to upset you. I was just picturing an angry grandpa yelling at a blinking VCR from your posts. You do seem unnecessarily wound up by some of the functions of the dashboard. Yes it isn't the most intuitive but then most things you haven't used before aren't. Nothing is where your mind expects it to be and I can see why that would lead to frustration. I have a little bitch at Apple when I'm expecting to sort out someones iPhone and none of the options are in logical places. We've all been in the same boat you're in with the Xbox but you seem to be making it twice as hard by getting wound up.

Take the Game DVR for example, there's only about three options. It really isn't that hard to figure out if you think about it and even if you can't, a small amount of trial and error reveals all there is to do with that app. I agree that the way all consoles prevent themselves during the opening stages could be better but if they made you sit through a complete tutorial on every feature I'm sure we'd have you in here moaning how you just want to play the damn thing and don't need your hand held.

Actually found the PS4 to be pretty wank for both wired and wireless. I manage 40/6 up wireless and 60/6 wired on a 152mb connection.

I get a full 152/10 with a wired XB1 connection.

Interesting. Virgin media I take it? I have 152mb broadband with them and my ps4 gets about 50mbps download wired, but I've not wired up the Xbox one. PlayStation's internet/wireless gubbins is well known to be shit in that respect, though, and virgin have long had 'issues' with them and their superhubs in particular.

Yes sir. Using home plugs I get about 60/10 on the XB1 and 40/6 on the PS4.

Ffs.

There is one. Immediately to the right of the currently running app on the home window there's a link to a set of "learn about your new xbox" videos. There's also a help application preloaded.

There is, but unless they've significantly updated it since launch (which was the last time I used it, in fairness) it's fairly useless for anything but the most rudimentary of tasks. I'm not even sure it clearly explained that anything that's highlighted green is a command you can give Kinect, which seems incredibly obvious now but like I say at launch we were all flying blind for a few days.

if it's any consolation (DYSWIDT?) I won't be this bad when I open my bone in 5 big sleeps.

earlier this week I was halfway to starting a thread in A&F about smitty stinking out multiple threads with his inability to buy a bone.

I didn't though, cos you know, that'd be bullying...

The console has stopped responding to the pad now. The Xbox button light comes on but the console is not responding.

I assumed the battery but neither my brother or I recall seeing a low battery warning plus the light is still working.

Just checked and my bro has already tried another pair.

Aye yi yi.

how does it feel to be as clueless as your mother?

Fuck me, I agree the UI could be better but I'm amazed you manage to wipe your arse on your own if you're throwing a paddy over stuff that most other people have managed to work out by googling it or just y'know...pressed a few buttons.

Of course you can Google but I'm talking about the experience based on just trying to use the console.

Please don't patronising me with stuff like try a few buttons. What do you think I did?

What's this about making you sit through a tutorial? I'm talking about completely optional tutorials - although I think for the first time you use anything you should get a tool dialogue.

I've no idea why you're trying to make my comments more than what they are.

Don't trial and error me either. Of course I tried things. Did you somehow miss the parts of my post where I did exactly that and ran through trial and error?

Managed to set my Xbox One up yesterday, and despite the hacking issues I did get the machine updated, Geometry Wars downloaded, plus a short go on Forza Horizon and Metro Redux.

The one thing that struck me was how few instructions were in the box. If you were new to gaming and this was your first console you'd be struggling.

Not had much chance to play on the system today but looking forward to getting some decent time on it over the weekend.

There is a very good welcome video when you first login, explains all the stuff about recording videos and the snap function etc, there is also Xbox Help which you can snap.

You're a negative time sink.

I had a look and didn't come across either of these. I think the console should highlight them to you upon setup.

Thanks for the completely unnecessary personalised insult at the end. Yeah, I'm in here because I'm "negative" not because I wanted to talk about the console.

People see what they want to see. Noone says fucking anything when I'm praising something, because it doesn't fit with their preconceived notion.

The system is a bit awkward. Why some people feel that is their opening to have yet another pop at me I don't know. I kinda hope to have some sympathy here amongst gamers and consumers but apparently not.

yeah sorry all this shit has been explained above.

Anyway - personally I find the whole thing very easy to use now, I don't even use my Kinect with my own Xbox One, the voice functions never work properly.

My 10 year old has managed to work all this shit out just fine, but he did watch the welcome video.

The only thing I would criticise is the Game DVR feature - 5 minutes maximum is too short, my son recorded four, five minute clips and tried to use Upload Studio to make a multiclip video to upload to Youtube and he found 5 minutes is the maximum, so that's kinda pointless unless you want to make montage videos with short clips.

Right, well, I setup the console. I didn't see any such video. I'm not playing silly buggers here.

I must have skipped it somehow. My comments are based on my experience.

But if whoever it was truly feels he could do a better job, then what's wrong with suggesting he might find a more fulfilled life pursuing such a career.

Are you for fucking real, Jon? You and Game Paused?

As per Harsins post, saying "Oh well maybe YOU should do X better" as a response to criticism of X is the argument of a child.

I can only look at its lack of negs and conclude that this thread is subject to the usual Rllmuk single subject threads around a product/service trend whereby said threads descend into insane tribalistic cliqueyness, because that is a totally laughable statement.

I don't recall seeing it/being prompted about it when I setup my console last week. I've played nothing but Titanfall so far but my brief forays in the menus have been somewhat confusing, presumably due to it originally being based around voice control. It's a shame MS don't support voice via an external mic or even the supplied headset as it would no doubt alleviate some of the issues that new users have.

It's weird to come from a 360 where most functions were logically presented, to something that doesn't flow in the same manner. For example, to access my Profile I seem to need to access the "Friends" page, and it's buried within there. A bit odd - but now I know it's there I guess I'll remember.

If it's any consolation, mine's fine. Stuck a nice background on, had a snuffle around the menus and shop, played some more Halo and updated it ready for the beta, and quite like the look of a game on the marketplace called leave home or something, about a boy and a wolf. Pad isnt as good as the ps4 one, but it's nice to have batteries in it that last more than 6 hours, and it is pretty quiet. Just waiting for Titanfall to be cheap....come on Microsoft knock it down to a tenner.

Maybe you should take a look at yourself if you can honestly call people childish with a straight face.

Your over-reactionary nonsense in here today, then your reactions to people having a little dig have been pure playground fodder.

Anyway, I won't be carrying this on, it's supposed to be the season of good will to all men, after all. So, Merry Christmas and I'm sure you'll figure everything out soon enough.

Managed to get some Halo, Forza 5 and Sunset Overdrive going today and it is working very well indeed. Only issue is that Halo seems to be stuck at 90% Installing, which I am not sure if that is from the disc, or downloading.

Viewing terminals in halo just fucks the menu right up for me, slowly installs the halo channel, takes you right out of the game, even halo is updating itself again while I play, after the huge patch. Definitely not the slickness I think they were aiming for, im sure lessons are being learned.

It is daft that the terminals mean going to another app to view. I think there was something similar with Halo 4 that took you to Halo Waypoint instead of keeping everything within the game.

Once the game and the app are 100% installed it should be alright. It actually is a pretty smooth transition to the Halo Channel and back to the game, in my experience.
