Xbox One Console Thread

My Halo took 2 fucking hours for the lot

It's just.... Arrgh. I don't know what it's doing.

First it was installing. Then it got to some percentage and said 'ready to start' (bad communication: can I play? What does 'start' mean?) and then it said 'Oh there's a huge update for this buggy piece of shit' so I selected that whilst feeling rather confused as to why it didn't want to finish installing before updating.

Then the progress percentage vanished for ages. Then it changed to 2% and stayed like that for yonks whilst blaring like a vacuum.

Now it has stopped making the disc noise and is still stuck at 2%. What the fuck is going on? Why can the interface tell me what is happening?

Hype: dead.

Halo is trying to pull down a 20+gb patch at the same time as installing the disc. If you want to play it right away, go into network settings (press start anywhere on the dashboard) and go offline. This will mean you can just install the disc content which will take 30 minutes or so. Next time you go online the patch will download so maybe do this overnight.

I stayed offline, the 500mb console update took 20 minutes on 40mb parents fibre.

Halo 1 and 4 were there within 10 mins, the others took about an hour and a half to 2 hours.

You really want to hate it, don't you? Hopefully your brother will enjoy it.

I really want to hate it? What? Why the hell would I want to hate it? Can you explain your logic to me?

Please don't bring your fanboy nonsense into my face right now, your bizarre fealty to a multinational corporation.

I'm a consumer and I'm discussing this product. Now I don't want to hate it you silly man. I've just paid a tonne of money for it and I also am trying to play it right now. I want to enjoy it.

Why do I even need to say such an obvious thing? What adult is still doing this console warz shit a year after release?

I didnt find the OS very slick either, plenty of blank black screens, weird pauses, I couldnt find the launch button for some reason during the install, it dropped back to the dash a few times. But this goes with the territory, everything you buy has a painful setup, the Wii U wasnt much fun either. Halo is great so that initial start is now a distant memory.

Smitty . If you'd read any of this thread you'd know of all the issues already. Essentially you're being about as clueless as your mum. :)

Kinect is really good. But not essential. The dashboard layout you get the hang of after a day.

The installation times do suck for some games. None of this is new information or something the hasn't been mentioned every other page.

Stop being a drama Queen and beating yourself up over not getting a Kinect for your brother. He's a lucky sod for having a brother who cares for him as much as you do.

Haha, 30 minute installs.

Thanks for this post but I can work out what's it doing, it just communicates this poorly. It handles the whole process poorly.

If I can play without updating why not tell me? Why isn't there a dialogue box explaining this?

When you get to partially installed -

- this game is partially installed, you can now choose to play X feature

- estimated install time counter

- this game requires an update, would you like to update now or later (you should be able to play without update without turning the connection off)

- estimate download time for the update on your connection counter

- when updating game with a download say 'Game update downloading' instead of 'installing' (as it is now)

All of that would make a HUGE difference.

To think that some team of people were paid huge amounts of money to design these systems and ui things and it's not user friendly. Jesus H.

To be fair, the first-run experience is terrible. Took me the best part of a day to setup my brother's Xbone and install the 4 games that he had for it. And that was on a fibre broadband connection. Can't imagine what it would have been like yesterday with the extra demand and the DDoS attacks happening.

All of what you describe plus sometimes it just hasn't responded full stop and/or hasn't responded in the way I would reasonably expect.

It's now on 3%. Sigh. My mum's on 10 meg (I know but again she never listens to me and just buys the worst shit everytime) - how long will thus take?

And the disc noise has just started again as I reached the end of this post. Why? The disc noise just stopped for ten minutes plus and now it's going nuts again.

What a baffling machine. I wish it would tell me what it's doing.

It's installing the game whilst trying to update it. I'd recommend pulling the net out and letting it do one thing at a time. On 10mb the mandatory 20gb update will take a good long while, but, whilst it's not ideal, 343 did announce it would be required prior to release and it was picked up by every major games news network.

The Xbox one ui is basically windows 8 and, as such, I didn't find it too bad to get around since I've been on windows 8 for almost 2 years, but it's not brilliantly laid out, I don't like that you cant just pin your games or apps to the main screen (it says you can, but it actually puts them one screen to the left). I don't know which is worse between xbone and ps4 for crappy ui. They're both pretty shit. Neither seem faster or slower than the other, though, overall. Xbone might take a touch longer to turn on, but after that they're about the same.

I cant disagree with a word youre saying, but no point getting down or annoyed. I watched some xmas TV and went back to it after. The only thing you can control is your outlook on it.

The progress went from 3 to 6 to to 17%. Stayed there for a while. Now it's saying "ready to start" again. The disc noise is still going.

I can see a theme-coloured progress bar where it says ready to start.

Super confusing approach.

Ready to start means you can run it, but only some of the games will be available, it shows you once you launch it and you see the 4 titles on the game select screen, some of them say not ready.

So touchy.

Just chill a bit, Smitty.

If you want to call having sense fanboyism then so be it, but you'd be totally wrong.

You've basically flown off the handle before using common sense.

The game will let you play when it reaches a certain percentage of its install, but obviously MCC needed an update as soon as you booted up. It's added this to you percentage installed indicator and will be queued to install after the main game is done. That's why its dropped back down. Just relax and it'll install.

Personally I'm all digital these days, so my installs are generally done while I'm at work, so I don't know the times involved in installing from disc.

But yeah, fanboy or some other bullshit.

Jon. And Boozy, obv.

Shut up you pointless prick.

Sorry, is there any particular reason you're being a dick?

Is this not the Xbox One thread? Am I not LITERALLY sitting in front of an Xbox One that I've paid for right now?

Yeah - you being a fucking drama queen over something that isn't even yours. It's ready to play literally before you finished whining so go play and give us peace for fuck sake.

Also ain't it grand that we're reached the era of 20gb patches? The era of "release broken shit, patch later and make much of our token efforts to compensate for the broken shit we released".

If you've got a slow connection you'll be waiting ages to play the game you paid for, because the publishers are lazy hack fucks.

This is console gaming now apparently. And people moan about PC gaming!

Hahahahahaha

See my post above for why it's all poorly communicated and designed ui wise.

There's a dozen suggestions in that one post and they all seem pretty common sense to me.

Maybe we have to wait until Apple make a games console.

Yeah, I just read that.

It's not the most intuitive UI, but they're working on it and improving it all the time. I hate to think what it was like at launch.

Anyway, as alien as it first appears it only takes a bit of time to figure out its nuances. I fly around it like a boss these days.

What the fuck? This is the Xbox One thread. I am talking about the Xbox One.

What's more I've bought an Xbox One.

Fuck off.

I was expecting a UI hell, but it reminds me of android, press menu, then its black, basic and works fine.

Cant find where I can set my background wallpaper though, im not in the beta dash program, can I do it yet?
