Xbox One Console Thread

There's not a single person who stills play games on their PC in any of my social circles, although there were several that used to. I know PC gaming makes a lot of sense and is generally unrivalled in many areas, and I used to adore it, but I do think the forum over-represents it as a proportion of gamers.

That's because gaming forums don't represent gamer demographics and attitudes very accurately in general.

Oh yeah. It's possible I'm talking out of my arse. You wouldn't use a scaler chip for remote play; you adjust the entire render pipeline to the right resolution, wouldn't you?

Genuinely no idea. The PS4 has a chip dedicated to video streaming, maybe it uses that for remote play?

Re: Remote Play, AFAIK on PS3 it rendered everything at full display resolution then compressed it down heavily to PSP resolution on one of the SPUs for transfer over wifi (if your TV was set to 720p instead of 480p you'd get a different use experience on Remote Play since all the icons and text would be smaller). On PS4, because it's got an entire part of its rendering pipeline already set up to seamlessly scale and compress video for the Share functionality and save it off, there's a lot less of an overhead.

I'm really torn on this.

The biggest reason I want to jump straight into the next-gen is for Battlefield 4, and I've had a PS4 on pre-order for a few months now. Although the launch lineup of the One appeals to me more, I was taking solace in the money saved, the gorgeous looking indie games, and the common census that the multiplatform versions will run better.

However after resting on my laurels, I've just been (very) reliably informed that once you play Titanfall there's absolutely no question about it, you just have to go Xbox. Apparently it's a genuine system seller, the best MP since the glory days of CoD4. Big words, and I believe them. Plus what with it getting all the BF4 DLC early (not that big a deal, but y'know), along with Halo 5 and a new Horizon game on the... horizon.

And yet all the forum Battlefield guys are going PS4, and I'm sat here staring at my pre-order which has the console, the game, an extra pad and a years' worth of PS+ for less than the price of an Xbox with the game on its own. Decisions.

Titanfall isn't out until next spring / summer, and there could be more news on just how long it is an exclusive for. And as you say, all us BF4'ers are going PS4. Plus if you get a Vita, you can play BF4 in bed. And maybe even on a VR headset come next year ;) Plus, Playstation Plus! That's a big selling point for anyone.

Well Titanfall is out in March, so after a few months of BF4/Dead Rising/Forza it's really not that far off.

Also I'm really not convinced the Vita streaming is going to be much cop, by the time a video feed had been rendered, compressed and sent over wifi you'll have been killed three times over in anything reaction-based. Nice idea, but I'm sceptical.

Obviously I'm going to end up getting a PS4 whenever Naughty Dog announce something, maybe sooner if the alleged cross-platform discrepancies actually manifest themselves, but for now I'm just debating over the launch. If the Xbox One launches three weeks earlier that's another plus point for me.

Probably unlikely, standard Microsoft practice on time-limited platform exclusives is to contractually forbid the devs from talking about releases for other platfoms. I doubt we'll hear anything until sometime after the Xbox/PC releases.

Edit -- if it even happens of course. If Respawn have ambitions to do annual cycles of Titanfall I could see them simply waiting until the second game to go cross-platform, for example.

Titanfall is coming out on PC and 360, and will probably come out on PS4 before too long. Unless MS stump up ungodly amounts of cash to make it a proper exclusive, which they should.

360 version is being made by a different developer hand picked by Respawn.

I don't think he's saying there's 0ms lag, just that it'll be low enough not to matter. Like the Wii U and the shield.

yep the WiiU manages it to the extent that sometimes it displays image faster than the TV can (digital foundry tests)

so if PS4 uses same wifi tech to Vita then it'll be the same. The tech WiiU uses isnt proprietary so it might be possible on PS4-vita see article here

The funny thing is that Titanfall will almost certainly sell better on 360 than Xbox One. Not to say it won't shift units of the latter but the disparity in install base is going to be huge, so the version we aren't paying attention to will probably be way more successful.
