Xbox One Console Thread

Maybe if you weep into Sony pyjamas, then yes, you'd damn their cruel and underhand tactics of paying for things (those bastards). But I notice even you agree its hardly a whimper.

You're right, it was too loud to be a whimper.

A gurgle maybe.

All its doing is putting a layer over your sky or virign. You still need all the same boxes but now youll need another box a kincet and a gold sub to make it work. They are putting more barriers infront of you watching tv.

Well, making the massive assumption that they really decided to do this properly for the UK, they could make a pretty simple dongle that added a Freeview tuner that turns it into a DVR. Coupled with excellent versions of Netflix, Lovefilm, BBC IPlayer and all the other broadcasters' iPlayer knockoffs, and obviously some actually good games that they have yet to reveal, then I could imagine the Xbox One being the main thing I use the TV with all the time. That's what they want, and I'd go along with it. Also there's the ability to control it with Kinect voice commands and I don't even have to use a remote.

I don't like this idea that just because you were disappointed with the event then every single thing in it has to be fucking terrible. This TV stuff is good. Is it good enough to make up for everything else? No it fucking isn't.

It was worse than i could ever dream it could be, wtf were they thinking. The box looks turd, an 80 vcr and its huge, they focused on everything i feared they would. And then even more bad news, kinect needs to be connected at all times for the machine to work, no used games so no rentals bye lovefilm, it doesnt need to be connected at all times but needs an internet connection what does that even mean. They showed nothing games wise, they managed to smash my lowest expectations sonys show wasnt a home run at the time but looking back now they smashed it out of the park compared to what ms has just shown.

People are going laughably overboard with this! The 360 is a fucking brilliant machine (one of the best ever made), its got a huge library of games with some genuine classics, the pad is fantastic, and online is quality. I can't really see how anybody can top it next gen.

That people can forget all this and think that a console developed by a company the size and strength of Microsoft, that is backed by all the big name games companies, and has a huge loyal fanbase, is suddenly going to collapse after a 60min presentation aimed at their mainstream customers is..............well, utterly ridiculous!

I'm really looking forward to E3, and seeing what Microsoft and the Xbox One can offer up. There are clearly going to be some massive announcements. I'm also equally looking forward to seeing the PS4 stuff and the Nintendo stuff before i make a decision about which one, if any, i go with.

Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?

A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q: How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?

A: The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible. Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

  • Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.
  • Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.
  • Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.*
  • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.
  • You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.
  • Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.
You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share.

These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

* Subject to content geographical restrictions.

Q: When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?

A: Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q: Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?

A: Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q: Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?

A: Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?

A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?

A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?

A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.

Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?

A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?

A: No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.

Yeah, I know you're a troll. They don't 'sound' anything, and I didn't imply anything about their quality or lack of it. I just pointed out that your assertion that MS has 4 IPs isn't true. Because, y'know, it isn't.

But then they haven't got many. Not as many as Nintendo or anywhere near. So I don't think you can laud MS for innovation, for not releasing another MarioKart because if MS had made a MarioKart you can bet your cock they'd be releasing a MarioKart.

Anyway, for a big Nintendo fan like myself this is actually great news. The Xbox one clearly isn't as powerful as the PS4. Which means developers won't be just making one nearly identical game for Sony and MS. They'll probably focus on the Xbox, it'll be cheaper to make. Therefore next gen games won't look much better than WiiU games and then I'll be able to sleep easy.

If you've already got a Sky box, or YouView or even a 50 quid Sony blu-ray, you have a lot of those services. Chances of getting Spotify on the Xbox are nill - so the WDTVLive is a better bet there.

To be honest, I don't grudge these things though. The more boxes I've got that give me access to the services, the better... but I've already got 5 of them!

It doesnt have a tuner though, its not what you think it is its not a dvr at all. All the dvr functions are coming from your current dvr box, this is just using the hdmi in to layer xbox over the top. You can get all those things now on most new tvs alone, why would anyone want to pay £400 for a games machine to do it?.

Yeah, for sure. I think E3 is going to have to be amazing now. Microsoft in particular are going to want to put on a hell of a show after this. I think the event tonight was massively misguided, but it's not over.

My next gen machine is still a PC. For now.

So it doesn't always have to be connected to the Internet but it does always have to be connected to the cloud.

I did not have sexual relations with that woman.

It will have a very generous 30 minute timer before it kicks you off, perhaps?

It's part of the fun. We took the piss out of the PS4 presentation. Except we all liked what we saw.

I agree about 360. The ONE seems to add a ton of barriers between me and the games. And now they're playing down the graphical upgrade.

150 minutes on from the close of the conference and I'm still fucking stunned.

Is this a blip we'll all forget? Or is the amazing Xbox brand really dying as we watch...

I want MS to die now, Windows 8 was a kick in the balls, but this..this was a bullet to the fucking brain.

We're now down to one console maker that actually still gives a fuck about..shock,horror, games.

Nintendo are irrelevant, MS have lost the fucking plot, Sony...take my money.

I don't think I've ever felt so at odds with American culture as I do right now. Baffling, gibbering insanity.

Not convinced that any solution that doesn't offer (say) Game Of Thrones and Premiere League football is 'doing it properly'. Sky are the eight hundred pound gorilla here; Freeview is a side show.

How will they persuade the likes of Tivo & Sky to let MS become the front end for their boxes? Unless the functionality is incredibly basic (like the original Tivo) and is nothing more than channel switching.

Hard to see how it'll work. Will the XBOX ONE record shows or will it somehow persuade the Sky Box to do it?

Ok, so making the assumption that I actually bought this, where am I expected to put that massive Kinect sensor? It clearly wont rest on top of the TV, but equally I cant see that there is much opportunity for it to be discreetly tucked away - it seems to be as wide as the bloody console itself. I don't want the thing yet they make it mandatory for use. Bonkers.

It won't fail simply because they've already sold the system to their core audience anyway, sports enthusiasts and people who spend far too much time playing COD online. It's more a question of what the casual market will do.

Ha, you should see the stick people get in the Wii U thread if they say the same thing about the Nintendo machine. :-D
