Xbox One Console Thread

Nah, play & charge kit is where it's at. Never change batteries again. And if your pad's running low and the cable won't reach to your Xbox, just stick it in a laptop, iPhone charger or anything else with a powered USB and carry on where you're sat.

Well a quick Google tells me Halo 5 is over 80GB for a download (with patches) to get you started, not sure on the others you mention. I filled my 500GB Bone in a couple of months and I'm around 66% full on the 1TB I added shortly after.

The 360 games aren't very big though.

Edit : Quantum Break 44gb at least (more with the episodes) Gears of War also around 44gb, Sunset OD 26gb, RotTR 20gb - So you'll probably be OK with 500GB for a while.

Stick your console in low power mode. Updates download over night when the machine is turned off. If you can't do that, the new OS has an Updates tab that shows you anythign that requires an update.

Seriously, this isn't even a problem anymore.

It's a problem when you're on my connection and 3games release 40Gb of updates in 2 days, even in low power mode. It's more a gripe at insane updates than a specific Xbox problem though.

You not on the preview dash Boozy?

I'm not sure if it's the case, or what the actual point of it is if it doesn't work like this, but you can decide what you want to update and when now, meaning I think you can leave the updates for a more convenient time.

Ah right. You must have some seriously shitty internet then, if you can't leave the updates going overnight or while you're at work and not have them done. I sometimes forget how good having Infinity 2 is.

So if you buy a game, just wait to the next day to play it?

He doesn't mean literally overnight.

My console is set to instant on. As soon as an update is available, the game updates. Whether it's morning noon or night.

Thanks for the info. I'm still a disc man, rather than digital - so guessing I'll be alright...unless they are the updates!?

I just bought one of these:

I wish Microsoft had done an official dock of some sort like the Nintendo/Sony ones.

Ah awesome - that's pretty much what I have for the PS4. Recommend it?

I only got it today so I haven't had a chance to test the batteries properly yet. The controller sits on the dock easier than the official PS4 one, which can be a bit fiddly at times. Supposedly works with the Elite controller as well.

All games install to the HDD now... so even if you use discs, the drive will fill at the same rate as if you were using downloadable copies.

After install the disc is just a key to allow you to boot the game, same as the PS4.

Just go digital. Never change a disc again.

I do realise that me championing this and the play & charge kit it makes me sound like the laziest gamer alive, but you can't beat a bit of convenience!

I am pretty much all digital these days, not always day one - go for disc and if its a keeper after a while get digital on a deal.

For example..

I bought the Tomb Raider definitive edition for a fiver in the prime sale, bought it last month digital for £3 and sold the disc for £7!

For balance I paid around £55 for BF hardline on launch digital and have put 2 hours into it....

I did not know this! May get the slightly bigger hard drive them.

I always get disc, unless it's an indie game, as I rarely replay after I complete. Even games where I play online I usually sell after 6 months, as there will be another I want to play and I don't have the time unfortunately.

How big is the average game download from Gold? I have PSN Plus at them moment on my 500GB PS4 and am nowhere near to filling it!

On the topic of controller battery life - is it an idea to get the play & charge kit?

I got this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Officially-Licensed-Powered-Charging-Compatible/dp/B00NQT48NM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1470690315&sr=8-6&keywords=xbox+one+charger

It's lovely.  Bit fiddly to stick the controllers on correctly first couple of times but after that you get used to placing them right.

Before that I used rechargeable AA's the battery life waaaaaaaaaaaaaay outlives the PS4 pads.  I just got bored of the charge notification popping up mid game sometimes so figured I'd always have them topped up with the charger cradle above.

I own a PS4 and XboxOne.  Got the PS4 at launch and the XBoxOne a couple of months after.

PS4 has some lovely exclusives on it so I still use it for those but for everything else I've gone Xbox One.  BF4 is the only cross platform game I've noticed a real difference and that game was broken for six months.  Hopefully 5 will be closer in spec like most other multi-platforms are.  Honestly.  You won't really notice the difference unless you visit the digital foundry site.

OS wise, the PS4 is much quicker feeling due to being a lot slimmer in function. Xbox One's various functions are split up into seperate apps so sometimes you do notice a pause.  In terms of handling notifications and pretty much any other OS function like adding friends and setting up party chat it's just muc simpler than the PS4.

I've always preferred the XBox One controllers over the PS4 ones.  Don't get me wrong, the PS4 controllers were light years ahead of the PS3 ones but the Xbox One pads just feel better for the games I play.

Then to top it all off for ease of use for me is that to buy games from other regions if they're cheaper you can use the one GamerTag.  To do the same on PS4 means having to have several PSN accounts.

Ultimately it's worth having both consoles.  Uncharted 4 is too good to miss.  But if I had to REALLY choose just one then I'd have to go for the XboxOne.  It fits my needs better than the PS4.

I'm coming up on a year with my 1tb machine, although don't download everything from Gold every month. Still about 300gb free. I've used my ps4 so little of late (save NMS, starting tomorrow) that I'm tempted to put the original 500gb back in that and use the ubiquitous 2tb Seagate in its original caddy with my XB1.

I feel this is the way to go for me too.  I recently bought Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY for £12 in the sale, traded the old disc for a few £ and have the game installed now, lovely to have it instantly and silently available at all times (if anything goes in my day one machine it will be the drive which can be a bit temperamental).  I'm sticking with discs for this autumn season getting a few £ discount using Shopto, but will aim for maximum trade in value for most..

I used to think that boxed RPGs held their value better than any other games and have traditionally kept them and traded more or less everything else but now I think that's not going to be the case this gen when absolutely everything is heavily discounted sooner or later.  Additionally, there is no incentive to keep boxed copies in terms of decent game guides etc (with the odd exception, like the Witcher series, and the smaller Euro publishers tend to still include one, however brief).

PS that new function which enables you to see and priorities updates is brilliant (I'm an unplugger for my sins) - a whopping 50 out of 85 or so games it transpires.  I don't understand how so many "arcade" titles have managed to create 3-10gig updates without (to my knowledge) adding any new content.  I thought the Neverwinter one would be massive but it's matched in size at 10 gig by Pneuma Breath of Life which I completed yonks ago.  Some access to patch notes would be good.

Hope this is a sign towards more Capcom stuff hitting BC. But it probably isn't. :(

Bought the Deluxe RE Revelations 2 pack, was so close to buying it last weekend, glad I didn't!

So did I last week for the grand price of £3.99  but was hoping the actual content might be in the sale as it's a bit light without it.

if you are like me and

1 - Cant have fast broadband cause of where they live

2 - Like single player games most

then I would hesitate to recommend the bone. The controller is a dream to use, but the front end is plain terrible. Much much worse than the Ps4 or wiiu.

It took me over 24 hours to download AC Unity the other day. Whenever I purchase I game I know that I need to either leave it overnight or make sure my console is offline. Its a pain in the arse.

The Xbox One front end definitely seems flakier than the PS4's, which is weird given that MS are a software company and Sony are a hardware company with a reputation for terrible software. It takes longer to boot up, the suspend-and-resume function seems to be less reliable, and it seems to require the occasional hard reboot when things stop working. They seem to update the UI every so often, but it feels like they're just shuffling things around, rather than really improving them. The PS4 front-end is pretty ugly and is at best functional, but feels more solid.

Oddly, I had a go on the 360 the other day, and the front end feels a lot smoother.

Genuine question, but how is that different from the PS4 or WiiU? I thought they were pretty similar for patches, etc.

And do be so daft about the UI. Yeah, it's not the most intuitive, and it might take you 10 or 20 minutes to figure it out, but to discount the console completely because of it seems a bit harsh.

I find the front of both consoles unfathomable as I don 't use the OS often enough to become accustomed to them.

I switch it on and find the game I want and play it.... both are good at that. Or I start it and find Netflix or Amazon Prime and use it. I use Xbox for media player, no idea if PS4s is any good but Xbox was the first to allow connection to any media server (I use Serviio).

I don't use either store on the box I buy on website on PC. If I ever have to delve into trophies/achievments/friends/messages or anything else it's a mess to me. I needed help to delete a save on PS4 the other day.

the only positive I will give MS is if someone invites me to a game or something it will ping up on  screen and I press a button to join, most ingame requests prompt me with a button to press if I want to do something about a notification. On PS4 yesterday it told me someone wanted to watch me play a game (it was No Mans Sky) it just popped up with no indication of how I would let it do that.

the above issues are probably all easily solvable and I'm sure one of them is better than the other in some functions and not others but to me they are both a bag of spanners.
