How do I go about getting this new dash then? I'm currently in the preview programme, but it hasn't updated since the end of April and I can't seem to find anywhere to make it update.

Go to the preview app.  It should show that you're enrolled in the last preview.  Click on the enrol button.  You can then choose to enrol in the latest preview.

It will take a few days for it to be approved.

If I got to the preview app and select registration, it shows that I'm enrolled in 'Preview - Current Xbox One Experience', but if I select the Change button under Action, it only give me the option to stay in or remove my console from the program.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere to enroll for the new one.

In that case it seems that you can't register sorry.  It's pretty buggy at the moment to be honest with the preview app itself crashing quite often.  If you don't enjoy giving feedback and helping to improve it then you're probably best waiting for it to come out of beta.

You can't opt-in without being invited by MS.

For the update coming this summer, we’re taking the same approach we used for the New Xbox OneExperience with an

opt-in program to let fans choose how they want to participate. We’ll begin testing a set of features expected this week with an opt-in audience in Xbox Preview.

Quote

Here’s how it works:

*We will roll this update out over time to Preview members who opt in for it, starting with a set of Preview members who have historically submitted the most feedback. Our goal is to start with a group, get feedback on a set of features, then roll out to larger groups for additional feedback over time. It will not roll out to everyone at the same time. We’ll also be adding new features over time as we get closer to launch.

*If you’re a Preview member, you’ll get an invitation sent to you in an Xbox Live message.

*From the invitation, launch the Xbox Preview Dashboard and select the registration option.

*You can then opt-in by selecting “Preview – New Xbox One Experience.”

*If you don’t want to participate in this preview update, you will continue to receive “regular” Preview Program updates going forward. It will not remove you from the Xbox Preview Program altogether.

*Over the next several weeks, new builds will regularly roll out to those who opt in, and our engineering team will work to improve the features and fix any bugs they identify during the preview testing.

We’ll release the New Xbox One Experience to all Preview members in waves following the initial opt in period so hang tight if you aren’t in the first few groups to get access.

(replace "New Xbox One Experience" with "Latest Xbox One Experience".)

To all those dissatisfied with the current preview dashboard, please remember to fill in the usability surveys in the preview app and complain in the feedback forums. Only by bitching and moaning can it get better. Well almost all of it.

I assume that voice commands, one of the many much maligned features that people who don't have a Kinect or Xbox One like to make fun will now be of no practical use. I used to use the "Xbox" command constantly. Xbox record that was bloody marvelous for capturing a fun moment in a game without breaking flow. Xbox pause or play used to let me control my media without having to power up a controller or wipe the grease off my hands and Xbox go to DOOM used to activate the pleasure centre in my brain.

But the Kinect flopped hard and now everybody gets to say Hey Cortana instead. We now supposedly get a more natural experience, so much so that now we can invite people to parties by their name; well all that happened for me was Cortana using bing to search  "bike shop for a party" and even that took three attempts at trying to get her to recognise any input. Trying to pause a video now requires Cortana to register voice activation and then access the internet to process what cloud means before sending it back 10 seconds later. When I can turn on a controller quicker than it takes for the voice control it no longer becomes convenient or worth the hassle. It just becomes frustrating. Especially coming from a system that worked.

Yes the Xbox command was so short that it occasionally registered a false positive and the commands were limited to certain strings but I would take that for a service that worked 95% of the time instead of a service that is just broken. As it accesses the cloud to process all the voice stuff I don't see it improving either. All of the people late to the voice command party who made fun of Kinect and the prospect of talking to your technology, feel free to make fun of this one but know that it didn't used to be this way. Sure it was never cool to have a conversation with your console... but it sort of was.

How come it's so fast with mobile hardware and not this? OK Google xxxxx is fairly immediate, even on my old clunker Moto G.

I'll need to enable it on Win 10 and give it a whirl, I assume it learns your voice eventually? Or is that not the issue here?

It's not broken it's a BETA and it's in a far better shape out the gate than NXOE. I can't imagine the amount of data they'll be gathering on Cortana usage to make it better.

"hey Cortana show me what you can do" for example will show you the commands for certain functions. I've been impressed by it - the other half was actually taken aback by how naturally you can speak to it and my "sorry about that" incident certainly took me by surprise.

Please moan about it somewhere meaningful: voice control has basically been the killer app for the console.

Maybe for some, but I very much doubt it has been for many - certainly not enough to class it as a "killer app". Until the new update, the only voice control was via Kinect... something that MS effectively killed two years ago when it began releasing cheaper and more popular bundles without it.

Voice control could become more popular now, though, given that the new voice control supports headset mics in addition to Kinect.

I've been playing around with the new dash this afternoon.

On the whole, I've found "Hey Cortana, ..." better than "Xbox, ..."

The only real niggle I've had has been changing to certain TV channels.

"Hey Cortana, watch BBC1" (or ITV or various others) works fine, but e.g. "Hey Cortana, watch BBC News" instead snaps a Bing search for "Watch BBC News".

(And yes, I have submitted feedback via the proper means.)

You would hope they just need to smarten up the underlying Bing data there, rather than it being an issue with Cortana voice input per se. Like how Google has started presenting more relevant stuff in searches, rather than just a bunch of links to click.

Mine was like that until today now there's another option added.

It's a beta opt out and you'll get the other version back. If you don't like something you give them feedback that's how it works.

Well obviously I'm aware it's a beta. But there is no getting away from the fact that no matter how much they might speed up Cortana, it is an extra layer that has to be executed before the command you actually want, happens.

It always felt like "Xbox mute" "Xbox volume up" etc were kind of system level for want of a better expression. Now you need to tell Cortana to tell the xbox to do the command. If that makes sense?

There is no need to have cortana do simple stuff like mute, pause, play etc. No need at all. Not to mention the fact that as with my phone and surface pro, cortana isn't always amazing at understanding what you want.

With the xbox command, stuff just happened, but there is now always a possibility that cortana will misinterpret something, as it has done with me, and open up a web page with results on how to tell the xbox to pause a video, instead of actually pausing the video. That wouldn't happen just using "xbox" to pause something.

List of known Cortana issues when the build was released.

• Cortana
• If Cortana doesn’t hear you the first time, you can usually try saying the phrase again.
• In some cases Cortana won’t recognize the name of any game or app (ie. "Hey Cortana open Netflix"). This is an issue we’re working to address, so please use Report a problem if you encounter it. You can resolve this by launching Cortana from My games & apps, returning to the dashboard. On Cortana in Snap. On Cortana in Snap Tile in home, press the menu button to open the menu and select "Quit", which will reload Cortana, on next use.
• If Cortana says she didn’t hear you right after you say “Hey Cortana”, navigate to Settings > Account > Privacy > App > Speech > Collect Info (accept)” and confirm the setting is checked.
• When Cortana is “Thinking…” sometimes the sounds continue longer than intended. You can open Cortana from Guide or My Games & Apps and then close it again by hitting B button.
• On the first use of "Hey Cortana" after a reboot or crash, Cortana snaps but may display no results.
• You may be unable to use See-It-Say-It in various apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and the Blu-Ray Player app.
• Cortana sometimes needs to spend more time "Warming up..." than she should.
• Sometimes short commands are recognized incorrectly (ie. "Hey Cortana mute", "Hey Cortana pause") and initiate a web search instead.
• Sometimes short commands take longer than they should to be recognized (ie. "Hey Cortana mute", "Hey Cortana pause").
• "Hey Cortana snap TV" sometimes launches Movies & TV, rather than TV, until you say "1" or "2".
• "Hey Cortana turn off the Xbox" ... "Yes" in UK, FR, IT, DE, and ES sometimes gets stuck on the confirmation and fails.

Actually, there's a thread on it on the official feedback forum.

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_early_access/update_preview/update_preview_forums/xosu_1606/f/5631/p/2167849/5663151.aspx#5663151

I posted this:

Hey Cortana is rubbish.

There is no need for 'hey' so if you have to say something more that once it's really annoying. 'Xbox' was far quicker and my kids (under 4yrs old) can use the Xbox command but struggle with the new one.

Going back to 'Xbox' would be far better or losing the 'hey' bit would be a start. Why would someone think changing the command to something with double the syllables be useful?

I appreciate for non-Kinect users it's *something* but for us with Kinect it's a complete pain and a worse product/service.

****

Please post if you have strong feelings about it, it might result in a change

There's something so wanky and American about having to say 'Hey Cortana...'.

All the keywords these things listen for are crap, but the technology isn't good enough to have a Picard style "computer, ..."

I've never had a false positive on "ok Google", but the number of times people talking in the background, or the soundtrack on Netflix, has triggered "Xbox" renders the whole thing absurd. I had to keep voice on the first kinect switched off.

But the word cortana is daft. Not sure how much dafter than Siri or Alexa, but daft.
