Xbox One Console Thread

I'm trying to work out if you're intentionally calling Hotline Miami, Spelunky, Gunpoint and the entirety of Vlambeer's output 'crap', there.

(and would also love to see the modules that would enable GameMaker to build a game like this)

I use the streaming feature to play Xbox One games on my PC from time to time and it works brilliantly.  There's very little input lag that I can see and the picture quality's great.  For static stuff like Ori and the Blind Forest it's pretty indistinguishable from playing on the actual console.  For more action-packed fare like Halo, the picture is a bit softer and there's occasional macro blocking but nothing that impacts the game in any way.  I think it's a great feature and I'm surprised it's not talked about more.

Note though that this is over a wired connection (PC direct to router, then Xbone via homeplugs).  Presumable a tablet would be wireless so I don't know what impact that would have.

I do it wirelessly to my laptop and I'd call the result startling. I usually leave the pad synched to the console rather than hooking it up to the laptop.

Thats interesting, so I could get a laptop/tablet but keep the pad hooked up to the xbone and not need it plugged into the laptop/tablet!?

These Asus transformers/Lenovo MIX type machines seem like a punt is worthwhile!

Does anyone stream xbone games to a win 10 tablet or similar, I'm quite tempted to pick up a cheap one to allow remote play type stuff every now and again but wondered how well it works!?

The UI for doing so is a smidge clunky but once running I agree it's essentially perfect when run within a single network.

I stream wirelessly to my Surface 3 in bed, it works perfectly. Really impressive stuff.

I 'borrowed' my daughters computer and installed win 10 on it, got the streaming working and it did seem to work well - both on 5ghz wireless and it was pretty impressive, playing on the actual pad is so much better than on my vita for remote play!

Shame there is no mac client but I am now very tempted to order something to allow me to do it, shame there is no £40 vita tv like box!

Why don'y you get windows 10 running in parallels or something?

Hmmm, not a bad plan but I think I would have to buy a licence for Win10 - I did bootcamp on daughters mac mini and as you fresh install rather than upgrade its not free, same on my MBP as I have win7 on bootcamp but you can't upgrade as such.

Mind, I have no idea how much a Win10 licence is....

I'm having a nightmare trying to stream videos from my PC to my Xbox One.

On the PC, if I right click on the video and choose 'cast to device', the Xbox doesn't appear in the list of devices.

On the Xbox, if I go to media player, it says it can't find any devices either, and asks me to start a DLNA server on my PC. I've tried to follow instructions to do that, but the first step is always 'go to network and sharing center and enable sharing', but sharing is already enabled on my Windows 10 PC, so I can't do that.

If I open the Xbox app on my PC, I can stream games fine, so there's definitely a connection being made between my PC and my Xbox.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to set it up so that it'll work?

The man from the Guardian is making some interesting claims about what Microsoft presented at their recent press showcase. Seems UWP is indeed the future and consoles are going to become like mobile phones, I wonder if he interpreted what he was told correctly, that document was so on the money.

Microsoft is planning to unify its PC and Xbox One gaming platforms into one ecosystem running Universal Windows Applications (UWAs), the head of the company’s Xbox division Phil Spencer has announced. It also looks likely that the Xbox One will become more PC-like with backwards compatible hardware upgrades in the future.

Quote

“We believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we’ve ever seen,” said Spencer. “We’ll see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation and allow the same games to run backwards and forward compatible because we have UWAs running on top of UWP. It allows us to focus on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform.

Because it wasn't on...

We should try to set a forum game up at some point, particularly since it's on EA Access and there are many more Bone users now.

I don't know if this post does you any good at all, but I've found that so far the Xbox One plays anything you throw at it. So if you have a spare USB drive kicking around just put your stuff on there and plug it straight into the console.

Not much chatter here on how MS is basically reinventing their entire business model and having the current console as just one of a range of devices that will run 'XBOX/Windows 10' games? Seems massive to me.

Everyone speechless, or is this one of those initiatives that will lead to not much in the end?

Just read the Ars article for what Spencer said. I have to admit, they're saying all the right things for me to want to stay in this ecosystem, long term. I also liked that Turn 10 reckoned Forza could scale down to Intel GPUs, so if I have cross buy between my XB1 and Surface, I'm doubly in. I suppose it gives smaller devs incentive too, knowing they can deploy to both PCs and XB1 (and, presumably, future iterations of Xbox hardware). The latter may yield potential for Steam-like hoovering up of older titles in the future.

Also, getting out the crystal ball for a moment, imagine that, eventually dedicated consoles go away (or aren't front and centre, at least). If all this translates to universal windows apps that can run on farms of virtual machines and be beamed using the streaming tech they already have on LAN, then you're future proofing yourself, somewhat, in a manner that seems to scale better than Gaikai. Windows 10 on your TV, or Xbox, or all-signing-and-dancing PC - you choose. It's all rather interesting.
