Xbox One Console Thread

Nah you'll have to leave it in instant-on. What's the issue? It's not like it switches itself on and off during the night it's effectively off anyway. If you're getting into the preview program not leaving it in that state will be a pain in the arse for you.

Oh, just saving a few bucks of electricity, I guess. I'll try leaving it on. I know the PS4 method is more intrusive, and tends to update games I probably won't go back to any time soon, but Battlefront was updating the other night, so I thought I'd put in a few laps of Forza... which had to update.

I haven't been accepted to the preview program from your invite yet, d'oh! Why their support person couldn't add me is a bit daft.

Because I haven't had one since very early Jan.

. They're using a small sample of preview registered users just now for some reason. Another minor update

HOW TO GET IT:

If your console is in Instant-On mode and you have been selected, it will download and install the update and reboot to standby.

NOTE: Once the update is available to your wave, you can manually begin the update by navigating to Settings > System and selecting System Update.

If your console has been selected to receive the update and hasnt downloaded and installed the update by 1:00AM PST 2/4/2016, you will be prompted to do so at that time.

DETAILS:

OS version released: th2_xb_rel_1602.160128-1900

Available: 6:00PM PST 2/2 (2:00AM GMT 3/2)

Quests:

Trending on Xbox

A new Quest is available in the Preview Dashboard app. Check out the new trending feature in the Community tab where you'll find top activity feed posts from the community.

Fixes:

Games Failing to Launch

(Gems of War) - Certain games (Gems of War, etc.) should no longer fail to launch due to an error in which a large red question mark is displayed.

Known Issues:

Game Updates

You may encounter an issue in which game updates start at a high percentage (99-100%) and linger at that percentage for a long time. Unless the game tile displays an error message, the update is being successfully applied, but the progress bar is displaying a higher value than it should.

Console crash in games and apps

Were currently investigating an issue in which users may experience a console crash and restart when playing games and apps. If you encounter this issue, please submit feedback via Report a problem.

So Cobalt is very good - I haven't fully got my head around the controls yet but you can tell it has been a labour of love and the controls are incredibly tight - it's the kind of game that I'd recommend to anybody who likes "systems" games - the closest thing I can think to compare it to is Viewtiful Joe but that might just be the graphics and time mechanic making me think that.

I've only just noticed that D/Generation HD is in the list at the top of the page. D/Generation! That game was incredible on the Amiga. Admittedly a big part of that incredibleness was the carefully recreated William Gibson vibe, the vivid neon cityscapes and the stark, minimalist near-future setting, rather than the actual game which is probably rubbish nowadays. Still, it'll be interesting to see how it looks.

Read quite a cool thing that I never knew existed/happened - in the Division beta, because the Xbox struggles to output 1080p at all times it has a dynamic resolution whereby the overall resolution is lowered to accommodate with only blurring/softening of textures.

Thought it was cool anyway. It means steady 30fps at the cost of texture quality when it becomes a struggle which I think is preferable.

Is dynamic resolution scaling a common thing now?

I don't know, but Halo 5 does it to keep 60fps.

Poor Simmy.

I deleted my original post because I couldn't be arsed with confrontation. Sad that it's come to that, that anything merely touching on resolution results in an outpouring of grief.

But if anyone actually wants to discuss something that seems genuinely pretty cool, it's actually an interesting thing this dynamic resolution scaling. If it's a new thing then couldn't it really pave the way to better optimised games, not just on Xbox one but on PS4 as well? 60fps games with dynamic resolution as default in the future? I certainly wouldn't mind that.

I'm having the conversation here because, as far as I know, only the Xbox does it?

lol. Even though you started the whole thing.

I think Wipeout on PS3 is the only one I know that did dynamic resolution scaling. Not sure about PS4. It's probably technically possible.

I'd rather see 60fps with dynamic res but too many people have a good lol at the fact it's not 1080p so I can understand why some devs don't use it. It's a shame so many people are so short sighted and keep banging on about 900p thus putting devs off targeting 60fps first eh Simmy ;)

Out of interest, Lego Harry Potter years 5-7 on the 360 uses dynamic resolution. As one of the later Lego games, there's a fair bit of stuff happening on-screen, so I guess that's where they went to keep the frame rate up. It was jarring for me because it probably wasn't a high resolution to begin with, but I'm sure it works fine if you're dancing around 1080p.

I turned on instant-on last night, kinda comical how much faster it boots. Like going from an old windows machine with hardly any ram to something with an SSD. Do I get notified if a game is updated, or do I just happily assume that any updates will just get applied to games/apps as they arise?

I think you can sort installed games by "most recently updated", but that's about it.

Do you find your power brick makes a constant noise while you're in Instant On mode? Mine makes a constant buzzing/whirring noise - it's not loud, exactly, but it's definitely noticeable enough to be irritating when there's nothing else on in the room, so I leave the console in Energy Saving mode.

I'm not sure our house is ever quiet enough to notice that kind of subtle noise, with kids and animals. I'll see if I can hear it tonight. I've just got the brick on the wooden floor, underneath the TV unit.

If nothing else, I much prefer how it lights up the power brick light white (rather than yellow for "off"). You'd never know it was in standby, unlike the giant orange light down the middle of my PS4. Although, I've left that on standby now and no one has noticed it yet, so perhaps you start not to notice these things if they're always there.

Yes. I'm glad it's not just mine.

(It lives on the floor in a room with a wooden floor. My PS4 has started making a much louder noise when left on, so it's now getting turned off...)

My consoles are the opposite way around:

PS4: Silent in standby, but a chirpy warbly electronic sound comes from inside when completely switched off.

XB1: Silent power brick when switched off, but an audible buzz in standby.

And that's why the PS4 has remained my "Main". Even if I prefer the XB1 controller, even if I have more friends on Xbox Live. I'll use the console that can be kept in standby and can instantly resume games.

Glad we've finally reached a decisive conclusion to the console wars with this reasoning.

It's a war to those who only buy one, evidently.

No, it's only a 'war' to those stupid enough to be bothered by the existence of consoles other than the one(s) they own

You deleted a post cos seanr?

You want to go check call of duty BO3 on PS4 then cos that does it.

There's a thread specifically for resolution type shit so it doesn't stink up the mainline threads.

But anyway it is pretty cool and Halo5 is a shining example of the benefits it can reap - I'd be amazed given how good H5 does it if MS haven't rolled it into their developer tools.
