Xbox One Console Thread

Would you say it is better or worse than the existing dashboard? I never had a problem with the current one but I know some people didn't like it.

Originally I thought it might be worse, but after time spent with it I'd say it is better, though not by much. Performance has improved and everything feels a bit snappier which makes a huge difference when it comes to day to day use. In terms of layout some things are nice (like the new Community Feed) while others are questionable (the weird TV section). The store is still pretty rubbish.

Like the old dash once you've mastered using it, it's "fine", but it remains unintuitive. Sadly I don't think this will herald the end of new owners asking why the UI is so confusing.

So on the whole it's a bit better, though in many ways still the same.

The main difference with the new dash is it overlays whatever is happening on screen with friends lists and party organising so you're no longer taken out of what you're doing to send invites. It was a fundamental flaw in the old dash.

This. Plus being able to double tap the guide button and be on Friends straight away. Then a quick press of X adds them to party. I really like the new dash, makes much more sense than the old one to me although I've not explored it in all that much detail yet.

It's great for clicking on Halo 5 and adding people to parties anyway.

Sky TV app coming soon.

Despite being available on Xbox 360 for a number of years, the Sky TV app failed to make the jump to Xbox One upon the console's launch two years ago. But that's about to change, as Microsoft has announced that Sky TV will be making its way to Xbox One "soon".

"We're happy to announce that Sky TV is in development for Xbox One and will be coming soon," Xbox UK Marketing Director Harvey Eagle told us today.

Movies & TV get their own tab on the New Xbox One Experience, which is due to roll out on 12th November for all users. It's under this tab that you'll find all of your video streaming apps, including Sky TV when it releases.

See, they say that, but Netflix isn't on there (or it wasn't last time I checked a couple of days ago), and the channels are all dogshit. So far, the Movies & TV tab (which is actually the OneGuide tab) just hurls loads of expensive Xbox video at you. I'm really disappointed with it.

Edit: I voted for the suggestion to improve the OneGuide on their feedback site, but it's only got 370 votes. The popular suggestions are running at 8000 or so. I'm not holding my breath for the OneGuide to get useful any time soon. :(

Mine's got a single suggestion: Narcos. It's had that same suggestion for weeks. Never changes. It's not in my streaming apps, or whatever that bit's called, and it's not in my app channels either. Once, when I checked, there were about a dozen streaming apps there, but the OneGuide crashed when I clicked on them, and after a hard reset, they were gone.

The app channels I can find that aren't just Xbox video stuff are Amazon, YouTube and NFL. But the Amazon ones are 'new releases', not my watch list which would actually be very useful, not genres, which would be fantastic. The YouTube ones are some pirated Peppa Pig channel I've never watched (though my children have watched some Peppa Pig months ago), Justin Bieber VEVO (whatever the fuck that is, I've certainly never watched it) and another one I've never watched or heard of. The NFL one is just the generic news channel, not the 'my team news' you get if you actually go into the app.

And there's no way to edit those, or to add custom channels. The whole thing is useless and as far as I can see is just a way for Microsoft to try to sell you overpriced stuff you already get much cheaper if you subscribe to Netflix or Amazon.

Added you wiper

To your little black book?

(incidentally, my Bone has finally shipped, so if I'm very lucky I might have it by the weekend! If not, well, I guess I'll just have to let Persona: Dancing All Night console me. That and my unplayable copies of Rare Replay and Master Chief Collection. Because what better a way to celebrate getting a new console than a couple of collections of older games?)

So looks like they've just gone back to the 360 way of doing things for the quick access to messages and party etc? (except its a Win 10 style menu from the side rather than a central pop-up).

Fine by me. :)

I'm all for the mantra of "if it ain't broke... don't fix it"...

Are snap-ins gone now?

Just to keep harping on about the OneGuide:

Still have no Netflix. Even the one recommendation is gone - that's now a YouTube recommendation - and I can't find Netflix in the 'app providers' section.

Amazon has more channels than it did, which is better. They're still not tailored to me. They're new releases and most popular.

Youtube has more channels than it did, but again, they're not tailored to me at all. They just seem to be the most popular videos in different categories, rather than being based on what I watch or people I subscribe to.

It has eased up on the relentless pushing of Xbox Video, although it's still very present.

It is better than it was, though. Hopefully they'll continue to improve it, but I wonder how much is down to Microsoft and how much is down to the app providers themselves (do Amazon have to update their app somehow to get my watch list available as a channel, for example, or is that something Microsoft will do?)

And on another subject, my Kinect is only working 50% of the time. It seems weirdly regular: I'll turn the Xbox on, and Kinect will work. Next time, it won't and then the time after that it will work again.

I can't see how it would make a difference unless you had a faulty unit/cheap nasty chinese import cables really. I've got a cheapy 1tb one that cost me less than £40 a few years ago that works fine.

Also, you're on NXOE. It's incredibly likely the OS was bugging out. It's a Beta.

When my 4tb bust it was exactly like is being described - that sounds like one that has taken a knock.

If I'm understanding you correctly you want the xbox to make a request to Netflix/Amazon etc every time you switch it on or indeed every time you are at the dashboard whereby it will request your favourite/most watched shows from their service then present them to you in the one guide? For it to do this it'd have to login to each service using your credentials and in turn that would have to be done for every XB user with an account on whichever service. That doesn't seem likely and I'd imagine Netflix etc wouldn't be too keen on their servers having that sort of additional load placed on them (versus just now where people have to connect via the app on their device of choice so that they're getting the info when they request it rather than at times when they may have no interest in it). I'd imagine there'd be security considerations also.

Seems like a lot of work for something not a lot of people need/want - does this functionality exist somewhere already?

Agree. All HDD are made by only a handful of companies anyway. If you buy a branded HDD external drive like the Toshiba one above it'll be good quality.

I've been using an external drive for the best part of 4months now without issue. No noticable difference in performance. In fact if you get an external HDD running at 7200RPM or above or a hybrid SSD/ SSD you will improve performance over the internal drive (which is a standard laptop drive running at 5400RPM as I understand it)

Looking at the above the basic 2TB Toshiba drive looks quite a nice bet...

Yeah, that's pretty much what I want.

Personally, I don't really see the point in the OneGuide app channels otherwise. As soon as you start using the app in question, you're going to be building up a set of preferences and you'll have those preferences reflected in what the app recommends to you. So, you use YouTube and watch a bunch of TED talks, but never watch any minecraft let's play videos. Then when you go back to YouTube, if you're logged in, you won't be pushed towards Minecraft videos. That's how all those apps work. That's how they're most useful to you.

But if you go to OneGuide, you do get pushed towards Minecraft videos and TED talks aren't anywhere in sight. OneGuide's app channels aren't very useful for you, because they don't take your preferences into account.

I see what you mean about app providers not wanting the extra load on their servers. That makes sense. I'm not so sure about the security issues though - your credentials are stored on the Xbox anyway and are automatically used whenever you access the app. So if you click on something from the 'most popular' section of Amazon from the app channel, you get logged in automatically anyway.

Regardless of the load/effort required though, it doesn't really seem like people are too interested in it, so it doesn't look like it's going to happen. It does mean I'll go back to ignoring the OneGuide though, which is a shame, as I do watch a lot of YouTube, Netflix and Amazon and having one central place where I can choose from all that content would be amazing. As it is, I'll carry on loading Netflix, seeing if there's anything there I want to watch, then doing the same with Amazon and then YouTube as a last resort.

Not sure what you mean by the functionality existing somewhere already though. In general, or on the Xbox? And what functionality? The ability to access programs from streaming app providers from a single 'hub'? Yes, it's in the OneGuide. It's just not personalised. Presumably, as you say, because you're not automatically logged in to the apps until you launch them.

That first video says they want you to have the experience with the OneGuide that I want to have ("we want you to spend more time watching and less time finding something") , but it also clearly says the app makers program the channels and they won't be user configurable which, to me, neuters that. Shame.

Does it at least search across content providers? Finding out if a film I'm after is on Netflix or Prime or something would be handy. As for suggested content across providers, their individual apps do that right now anyway. Go to Prime/Netflix/YT, what do you immediately get? Recommendations, right. I don't think it's a stretch for them to enable swift API access to that, as it promotes access to their services.

Perhaps I'm misreading this discussion.

It says you have to mark films/shows as favourites which will then tailor a list of recommendations. So favourite Breaking Bad, Daredevil, Narcos = Recommendations of Bollywood, Romance & Paddington.

Yep. Think you have to set one machine as your "home" console.

No it doesn't. It says that you favourite app channels ('new films' from Amazon, for example) and then that channel will appear on the main page of the OneGuide.

I think the Bing search is supposed to do that. If you searched for Narcos, it should bring up results from Netflix and the web and any other mentions in any app you've got on the Xbox. I haven't tried it though.
