Xbox One Console Thread

While the games on the bone are good thus far the machine is a clusterfuck, I never thought I would say that PSN for party chat works better than Live - how the hell have MS let this happen!!?!?!?

Agree. From the 360 to this.. This is what happens when you let non-gamers loose on the design of a games system.

Sony looked at everything the 360 did well and essentially added that to PS4.

Nothing that can't be fixed with software though... thankfully....

Decided to download Gears Of War Ultimate Edition today ... my fourth AAA digital game on the XBO. Never thought I'd buy into digital... it was £10 cheaper than the disk one though. However 46GB download apparently... jeez...

Right, I should be taking receipt of an Xbox One this week, despite having thought I'd have to wait until December (hurrah for unexpected windfalls and well-timed personalised offers). I'm sure I'll be in here asking stupid questions (though I know a few answers already - like "press start for settings"). But my first, stupidest question I thought I'd make before the machine arrives: is it possible to get digital Xbox One games on the go without using the painful Xbox website; i.e., is there an Android app (and/or a Windows 10 app) that lets me browse the store, queue up downloads etc.? I saw the Xbox Smartglass app, but that seems to just be for remote controlling the console, based on its description at least.

It's hardly important if there isn't, of course, but I found I actually get quite a lot of use out of the PSN app, so it would be nice to have an equivalent for XBL.

Xbox One Smartglass has a store option and let's you send messages etc like the PSN app, also the Xbox App on Windows 8/10 let's you browse the store, but none of them are much better than the Website and even via the console its just as horrible.

Yep, the smartglass app is pretty good and far better than the xbox website, it wins automatically as you don't have to login everytime you enter it.

I've bought plenty of stuff through Smartglass whilst at work to have things downloaded by the time I'm home. I also like to browse the latest digital releases as you can filter by newest etc.

I hope they integrate a 360 store at some point and a way to download 360 GwG games although I suppose this will happen when BC goes live.

So, some first time Bowner impressions:

  • Controller is very nice - comfortable, second nature, just feels like a 360 pad to me.
  • Box is rather handsome, and very quiet, but the power brick is too noisy - might just be my luck, but I can hear it humming from across the room when console on standby (so it won't be staying on standby). Overall, noisier than my PS4.
  • Installations are appalling. Initial day one update crashed half-way through, but worked eventually. Then it was Halo 5 time...went offline, it still took about an hour to install Halo 5 campaign from disc (that is mental). Went back online to D/L Elite Dangerous, but it started Halo 5 update d/l and despite pausing that, it then wouldn't let me play the SP campaign until it had finished the full MP 9Gb update (poor). So, no Halo 5 for me yesterday then.
  • The interface is horrible, unnecessarily complicated. 360 (and PS4) UIs much better on the whole. I just unpinned everything and popped Halo 5 and E:D as pins. But the main window section is just awkwardly laid out.
  • Anyway, I did d/l and play a few hours of E:D which is daunting and immersive and brilliant. Next up is more of that and, finally, some Halo 5 campaign action.

tldr: nice controller, bit noisy overall, poor interface, glacial installs, but it is and always was about those amazing exclusive games - so despite what it sounds like, I'm quite happy really. :)

The forthcoming new interface is far better. I've found it just makes more sense.

Fixed an issue to make activation of disc based games more reliable.
Updated units in bandwidth usage from MB to Mbits to better match what most ISPs measure their download and upload speeds with and to be consistent with the existing experience.Known Issues:

Sign-In Issues:

We’re currently tracking a sign-in issue which some users are experiencing. If you’re having difficulty signing in, please try the workaround below, and if it resolves the issue, please reply to this thread in the Preview forums.

Workaround: Go to Settings/Account/Remove accounts and delete your account. Then, open Guide/Sign in tab/Add & manage/Add new to recover your profile to the Xbox.

Disc Based Games:
When attempting to launch a disc based game, you may be prompted to sign in with the user who owns the game.

Workaround: Eject and re-insert the game disc.

App Issues: Certain apps may fail to launch, or video streams may fail to play.

EPIX

Game and App Issues:

Edge Browser: If you access the web hub via the View button in Edge, you may encounter a crash when switching between the lists such as Recent and Favorites.

Game or App Crashes: Some users may experience game or app crashes which require the game to be force closed.

Workaround: Relaunch the game or app, or, navigate home and use the menu button to force close the app, then relaunch it.

Titanfall: Titanfall may fail to connect to Xbox Live.

Workaround: Hard reset the console.

NFL Live App: When playing videos in the NFL Live App, the screen may dim after a short period of time.

Media Player: The media player may fail to connect to DLNA content.

Forza 6:

Forza 6 may fail to update due to an installation stopped error.

Forza 6 may fail to resume a suspended session after powering on the console in Instant-On mode.

General System Issues

Wireless Networking: You may be unable to detect wireless networks with an external hard drive attached.

Workaround: While the console is off, disconnect the external hard drive, power on the console, connect to the wireless network, and reconnect the external hard drive.

Xbox App:

You may be unable to power on or off your console from the Connection Window in the Xbox App.

Workaround: Select More > Forget Console and re-add the console.

When using the Xbox App to power on or off your console, the Xbox App may fail to display whether the console was properly powered on or off.

Workaround: Select More > Forget Console and re-add the console.

High Contrast Mode: When a user enables High contrast mode in Settings, High contrast mode is always enabled on the console regardless of which user is signed in. You can disable High contrast mode under Settings > Ease of Access > High contrast.

Party and game chat: You may be unable to hear others when joining a party chat.

Workaround: Switching to game chat should allow you to hear others correctly.

Dashboard: You may encounter English text with strange characters on the Home screen. This is placeholder text and will be corrected in a future update.

Store: Preordered games may display as fully installed and no longer have a “Preorder” designation in My games & apps.

Disc Installations: If installing a disc based game while no one is signed in on the console, launching the game will cause the game to start, but crash to a black screen shortly after.

Sign-in, security & passkey: If you have enabled passkey or password protection for Settings, you may experience issues accessing certain sections of Settings.

Workaround: Navigate to Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey and update your configuration. If you have trouble accessing this section in Settings, hard reset your console.

Snap Center: When YouTube is snapped, it may share input with the home screen.

System Update Errors: If you encounter an update error screen while downloading a system update and the console freezes, please wait 3 minutes before rebooting the console to ensure crash data is automatically captured.

Upload Studio: Upload Studio may become unresponsive and crash when you select “Manage your clips” and press B to go back.

USB TV Tuner: Saying “Xbox Pause” or pressing pause on the media remote may fail to pause TV.

Think this frequency of updates will probably continue now up until the 10th/11th. Hearing rumours about 360 BC featuring way, way more titles than people are expecting.

Hearing rumours about 360 BC featuring way, way more titles than people are expecting.

Great news... Looking forward to seeing what they do on this. Its a nice unexpected bonus TBH. Looking forward to at least working my way though the Gears games again over this winter and playing some horde again with my brother whose still on a 360...

It will be interesting to see how the XBO copes with the more demanding 360 games. My expectations are not set that high to be fair the fact they can do this at all is a tribute to some great behind the scenes engineering. :)

Yeah not at liberty to say but two seperate sources and it is a rumour - they may decide to do a steady release of titles rather than drop the motherload.

@MattyP one of the titles that should be there day one is Bayonetta - if that's not 100% there'll be trouble :) Fallows will probably storm Seattle with a nuke strapped to himself.

Boozy you forgot R* Table Tennis !!!

The forthcoming new interface is far better. I've found it just makes more sense.

Been less than impressed so far.. having a bunch of technical issues since the update..

Media player is now very choppy for me for the first 30 seconds or so of most files..

TV passthrough is missing/blank about 50% of the time on resuming.. requires a restart to come back.. (Virgin TiVo cable box.)

It also seems to be a bit wonky - it's doing something different to it - it's laggy/jumpy.. it's especially noticeable in fast moving footage and very much when credits scroll vertically upscreen..

It won't boot up at all if my external usb HDD is attached.. screen stays blank.. need to attach it afterwards each time..(WD Elements.)

It's forced me to re-enter my gamertag password several times..

Never had any of these issues with the previous OS - only updated a couple of days ago as it wouldn't let me go online any longer unless I did.. :(

EDIT - just now it told me (after another reboot) that my wireless hardware in the machine was broken and would need repairing..

Powered it down (then unplugged it) and upon restarting the wireless was fine..
