Xbox One Console Thread

Looking for some help. My brother has severe learning disabilities, because of this he always ends up messing with the settings of his consoles (change language, delete save games etc). He's wanting an xbox one for Xmas. Is there anyway to hide the settings so he can't delete his games or change any of the settings?

I really hope Microsoft significantly outsell Sony this year. If they don't, one would assume that development costs of big AAA exclusive titles will be harder to justify in the future and that we'll see fewer titles like Halo, Quantum Break or Crackdown being announced. I expect that backwards compatibility wasn't a trivial task to achieve and that that sort of effort is part of the investment Microsoft would hope to be rewarded for.

If Sony can outsell them with essentially nothing but Battlefront marketing rights and the promise of Uncharted next year and be cheered on for doing so then I think it's possible that it could have an impact on budgeting and expenditure in the future.

A two horse race is better for consumers, no matter how irrationally you love or hate the runners.

The thing is the Xbox division is in a really good place, and the Bone is selling more than the 360 was this time last gen. So even though it'd be great for MS to start to sell more and catch up with the PS4 I don't think we need to worry about AAA development just yet.

Yeah just go to settings, then network, and click on bandwidth useage. You can see real time download speeds plus total download amounts.

Found it, thanks :) Even though it detects that my download speed is 178Mb/s (it's actually 205Mb/s but close enough) it seems that it downloads content at 120-125Mb/s max. Which sounds like a big difference (and it explains why games take so much longer to download than on Steam), but compared to the PS4 whicht detects my connection as 60Mb/s and downloads content at anywhere between 0.01Mb/s and 10Mb/s, Live is a brilliant service.

I just hope that the next dash makes stuff easier to find on XB1. You really have to dig around for even the most basic stuff. I ended up pinning the settings app to be able to get to it quicker.

It would be counter-productive for MS to reduce their AAA development budgets in response to Sony leading sales charts. It would give the impression they were abandoning the platform and their customers. The way to win more customers is by making their offerings compellingly different and better than those of Sony, which they're doing with B/C, their exclusives, and developing new titles like Sea of Thieves :)

Try pressing the menu/start button like absolutely anywhere at all on the dash if you want access to settings.

Excellent! Thanks for the tip. One less pin cluttering the screen. Weird how Microsoft managed such an unintuitive dashboard after the 360. I mean, the PS3 dash (for example) is bad imo but at least it's still immediately clear where everything is. I can't think of any other console that required its users to 'learn' how everything is accessed, even the most basic functions. Apart from that (just to make this post less negative) I like everything else about it so far: how silent it is, how it gives me decent download speeds unlike PSN, how the 2015 model of the XB1 controller is pretty good (the new shoulder buttons mean that something like Dark Souls is actually playable now) and I'm having a blast playing the old Halo games I know so well.

This might be as good a place to ask as any, has Microsoft ever said anything about adding Reach to MCC? Or at least hinted at it, like 'you never know...' or something like that? Unlike ODST the Master Chief is actually in it, make it even more relevant to the Chief's saga than the story by itself already is, but apart from that I remember it being pretty good. Probably my favourite campaign after CE.

You can set profiles behind parental controls, I think maybe with pass codes and the like. Not sure of the extent that it restricts you to, but I'd assume what you mentioned would be covered.

Cheers for that mate.

Settings is just 2 presses away. Start > Settings.

EDIT - Already covered!

Available today:

lof_zpssxpkuvbu.png

Layers of Fear is a psychedelic horror where you take control over an insane painter in his quest to finish his magnum opus. Heavily inspired by the masterpiece paintings from the past centuries, and the architecture and décor from the XIX century.

The PC version is very highly regarded so it's well worth a look! There's supposed to be a demo/trial available later today too.

Me too. 360 was so intuitive and easy compared to this IMHO mess of a UI. I've been using the XBO on/off for nearly a year now and still don't get on with it. Like trying to control a windows 8 machine without a touchscreen or mouse. :) Having a surface tablet I can see where the GUI came from... but it just doesn't work well with a pad as input device. Problem is with the XBO is that the corporate part of MS got involved with it IMHO. Anyway new dash incoming. Can't be any worse. Can it? ? ?

However just to add think the machine is great itself and really enjoying the games and the hardware is fantastic (and quiet). Although for some reason my pad makes a "twang" sound when pressing right direction on the D-Pad. :) Googled around for a fix and it appears its just the metal shield around the D-Pad - it goes when I press firmly near the right bit of the D-Pad. Doesn't stop it being annoying though... and make it feel cheap.

There's one thing that really annoys me about the Xbox One, something that was already a problem on the 360 and is also completely irrelevant to 90% of this forum - but I'm still going to say it. Microsoft has decreed that if you live in the Netherlands, you must use Dutch language settings. This is NOT optional. If you have your locale set as the Netherlands, you cannot select the English version of the dash. And if you set your locale as UK, the store automatically switches to the UK store. But even if you're willing to put up with a Dutch dash (every other device I have, from desktop computers to consoles to smartphones, are set to English because I prefer it that way) you will come across unexpected Dutch treats. Like Halo 4 in the Master Chief Collection suddenly forcing Dutch subtitles on you and all the in-game text, from title cards to the menus, is also in Dutch. There's no option to change this and it's only for this one game in the entire collection. Only way around it is to set my locale to Ireland, doing so gets rid of all the Dutch while still displaying euro prices in the store. So yeah, there's a way to get around this but still - why isn't there a simple option to set your language preferences regardless of your locale? Why would that not be allowed?

All Double Dutch eh?

That's a common complaint over on GAF, something surely will be done if enough people raise it.

Another basic irritation is the lack of "favourite settings" from the 360. Always a pain going into controls to find the invert option as the first thing you do.

My Xbox died on its arse last night taking the new dash update (going from the old one). Stuck at preparing console and after a reset it was stuck on the green loading screen. Was amazed how easy it was to fix using the "restore to factory default" option via a USB stick - once that was done it booted clean onto the new dash. Fortunately all my games were on the external drive.
