Xbox One Console Thread

Xbox is on its way back to the shop for a replacement. Launch unit died with a disk drive failure in December. Got a CoD 1TB box. Hard drive making horrible crunching and static sounds. Yay.

Sorted. Straight swap, no cod boxes left obviously but a matte black 1tb console was in stock, I'm happy enough with that :-)

Have they said anything about the new dashboard speeding up install times? I've had Gears of War installing for 10 minutes and it's at 15%. How is this acceptable?

I heard that you should disconnect from the internet before you install a game from disc -- or at least decline the update patch -- if you want to accurately see how long it takes to install the game. Otherwise, the Xbone downloads the update patch first, but displays the whole process as one general "installation" percentage bar. So if the game has a 10GB patch and your internet is slow, it looks like the game is taking forever to install from disc.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot but my internet is generally very fast.

I don't really understand Instant On mode. It seems to do whatever the hell it wants to. Sometimes it will download stuff and sometimes it just seems to stop for no apparent reason.

And honestly, every god damn game says "ready to start" and then lets you do nothing. Gears lets you sit on the menu and Sunset shows you the same annoying video on loop.

The Crew lets you play the prologue when it says 'ready to start', which is pretty cool. Of course, you finish that quickly and then have to wait ages for the rest of the game to download/install, which is frustrating. But it's better than a menu screen.

That's an awful feature. I just gave up on it a long time ago, these days I just leave it to do the full update and install before playing.

I found out yesterday that the machine lets you play anything you like while it installs something from disc, which was quite welcome. Harmunt's talk the other day about having a faulty drive on his Xbox led me to get around to installing Arkham Knight. I was fully set for just booting the console and letting it do its thing while I watched some telly, but as I had a game of FIFA running anyway I opted to play that instead.

What I didn't bother trying was seeing if it'd continue installing when powered down to the Instant On mode. Now that'd be a treat.

I don't think it does if its installing from disc unfortunately. Digital downloads work that way though.

360 games? Why is that a thing when the bc doesn't launch until November?

Or was that autocorrect?

Also anyone know what the improved performance is like, because when people were testing hybrids in ps4s it wasn't that much better.
