Xbox One Console Thread

My xbox streaming to win 10 seems to have gone crap overnight. Not sure why.

I was using Wi-Fi, but it was coping really well passing all the tests. Now, crappy. Tried wiring the xbox into the router but no improvement.

I got some homeplugs lying around, but the wiring in this house is old so speeds are slow. It'll be a pain if I have to keep switching. Doubt it's interference too, since nothing else was on and my house isn't surrounded by much.

Anyone else notice a drop in quality? Might be a Windows update it something.

Just tested mine and it was fine... and my xbox app is version 7.7.29027.00000

I did notice however that the tweak to switch on Ultra High had gone and reverted back... but I just edited the file again

I got an Xbox One! I'm finally one of those extravagant people with two current-gen consoles. I'm very used to the PS4 now, so I'm trying to find all the same features and getting confused.

First impressions:

- The dashboard is a confusing mess compared to the PS4! The PS4 homescreen isn't perfect but at least it's simple. Windows "tiles" are a mess... they're never in the same place twice. Settings are all over the shop. I'll get used to it (or rather I won't -- apparently there's a massive update to the interface coming in November).

Settings are all in settings. Easy enough to find in Apps. Or by saying "Xbox Launch Settings" (If you have Kinect). Stuff moving around, I'm guessing you mean on the main dash under your big tile? If so, they change based on the last thing you were running. If you mean in the Games/Apps folder, it's due to being order of most recent. Change it to alphabetical.

- It seems to run a lot quieter than the PS4 (my PS4 is one of the loud jet engine ones that everyone in the PS4 thread is trying to replace). I suppose the Bone pumps its hot air out of the top grille using a large fan. I'll have to see if more games push it to "jet engine" in muggy summer weather, but so far very quiet. Optical drive is quieter too.

It is very quiet, which is lovely. Mine has a noisy power brick which sucks.

- Installing a game is weird. It takes much longer than PS4, and seems to combine the disc transfer and the update download into a single progress bar with zero information. Apparently the "good advice" is to disconnect from Xbox Live before putting in a new disc, so that updates don't become part of the installation until you reconnect. If that's "good advice", Microsoft fucked up somewhere.

Yep, Microsoft seem to be doing the out of sight out of mind thing here. Over simplifying for no good reason.

- Related to the above, I'm amazed there is no way to see download progress bars. I searched everywhere. The PS4 has a handy "Downloads" screen with precise download details (such as "Witcher 3 Update: 200.45MB / 7.35GB - 19 minutes remaining"). All items remain in the list afterwards for reference. I've always been very picky about monitoring exactly how much I'm downloading, and the lack of this info drives me mad.

Same as above

- Interface: it's weird that the two buttons replacing Back and Start aren't even named (just symbols), and there's no information to tell you what they do. It seems there's all kinds of button presses and shortcuts you're just expected to know, with some fairly crucial controls hiding behind them.

The right button is called Menu. The left called View. Think of menu as a start button in game, right click on a mouse in dash.

- I'm used to the PS4's handy share options - screenshots and a constant 15-minute video buffer, with an easy way to transfer files to a USB stick. The Bone's recording options are harder to understand, and don't seem to be transferable to USB stick. No great loss, it's just a sweet extra on PS4.

Can be a pain in the butt. www.xboxdvr.com 3rd party and much better sharing options than one drive etc for all your saved footage.

- It's good that there's a suspend/resume mode, but I prefer the PS4's. On PS4 you can shut down in Rest Mode or shut down completely from the same popup menu. On Xbox One you must dig into the settings menus to find the switch between "Energy saving" or "Instant on".

I think you are getting confused. The xbox is setup that on initial setup you choose low power or instant on. Instant on delivers updates when the console is off at night & faster boot times, with the expense of a small usage of power constantly. Low power saves power (obviously), but you have to wait for updates when you boot a game (which can be many gb).

Suspend/resume allows you to drop out of your game. Go and watch some TV/Netflix/IE/Something else, then go back to the game at the exact point you left it from.

So. I wonder which console will become my "main". I have a feeling I'm more comfortable with the PS4, and multiformat games often have the edge on PS4. But damn, it makes scary jet engine noises in warm weather. Maybe later in the year the Xbone will impress more -- the dashboard update might make things easier, and 360 emulation will be pretty cool.

I noticed how noisy the power brick is too, which is a shame. I keep my gaming up in the bedroom rather than the living room, and noisy power adaptors are really annoying in the silence when I'm trying to sleep. Shutting down more fully -- "Energy-saving" mode -- makes the power brick silent, but then I'd lose game resume.

On that subject: You say I'm confused, but I think I'm right... "Instant On" shutdown keeps a game suspended, whereas "Energy-saving" shutdown also shuts the game down completely, so it must load from scratch next time. Am I wrong? That's how it works with the only game I have right now, Forza Horizon 2.

Currently the Guide Button menu offers: "Turn off console / Turn off controller". To be more useful it could offer: "Turn off console (Instant On mode), Turn off console (Energy-saving mode), Turn off Controller".

Yeah, I think the point to take is that Live just isn't for online multiplayer gaming these days. The free games, as mentioned above, are more than worth the entry price alone.

So I activated the 30-day trial for Gold -- I think the constant nag was caused by Forza Horizon 2, actually.

I'm still not sure Gold is essential for a single-player. I glanced through Games with Gold (although the 30-day trial doesn't include Games with Gold or discounts). I'm not too fussed with the XB1 selections so far, although some of the 360 games are good. But how do you play them if emulation doesn't come out until November?

Thanks for the hard drive advice before folks. Finally bit the bullet - went to install FF Type 0 after I bought it yonks ago and I was missing about 20GB to do it

Seems to be working very smoothly, I went for the 2TB 2.5" Seagate as mentioned earlier in the thread. Very neat little thing.

Now just organising my Xbox and re-downloading the games I had to delete to make way before. By the time it's all done I won't feel like playing anymore! :P

Yeah fish around and you'll find an official Apple page detailing which version of BCA you need for your model. I had to do this and everything worked afterwards. I'd link to it but am on my phone.

Found it! Streaming worked for around five minutes before deciding it needed an update which - for some reason - is downloading at 10 kb / sec and keeps cancelling itself. :|

My streaming works flawlessly for a while, then chugs badly, then works again.

The bone is hard wired into the router (well, the time capsule which itself has taken on router duties) but after that it's wifi. I get full bars on the mac.

Not sure what the problem is... Just general wifi stuff maybe.

It's a shame, there's no way I'd jump in on Destiny for a strike. Single player stuff only for now.

This!!! Xboxdvr is brilliant, you can download videos, send links to friends of the exact file, look through all your vids easily. It's crazy that Microsoft don't have a service like this, it's so much easier.

Hopefully all resources are going into the new dash.

One thing about the instant on/full turn off is unlike the ps4 you never need to shut down the console. Just turn it off via the controller or power button and then you can turn off the plug. That's why its best to leave it in instant on to get all the nice things but still be able to fully turn it off quickly if you need too. That's the thing I hate most about the PS3/ps4 is having to shut down properly.

Don't really follow your point here. The only difference between the two consoles is with the PS4 you can elect which power mode you use in the power down menu, with the Bone your choice is set in the settings menu. You don't need to shut down the PS4 any more than you do the Bone. As an aside - I'm not sure your technique of setting the Bone to suspend then powering it off at the wall is ideal either.

It's pretty straight forward isn't it, unless I'm missing something.

If you want your downloads to happen in the background and you want quick resume of games then set it to instant on mode.

If you want to shut things down completely every time you're done then set it to energy saving mode.

Personally I don't see the point in energy saving mode as my console is in constant use by the whole family. It wouldn't have been a bad idea to have both options when you go to shutdown though, I suppose.

Get yourself on the preview program. What's your gamertag? I'll fire you an invite.

This. Which I thought was the point SqueakyG was making in the first place.

However you can shut the Xbox down fully when its set to instant on mode by keeping your finger over the Xbox logo on the front of the unit for about 5 seconds. Works when it's in standby too.

Yep, that's exactly what SqueakyG wanted; it's something that would irritate me too, as I tend to suspend my PS4 I'm taking a short break, but if I'm turning it off for the night/because I'm leaving the house for a good few hours then I'll shut it down and then turn everything off at the wall.

If the Xbox One allows you to approximate that behaviour by keeping it in instant on mode for suspend functionality and then holding the Xbox logo to turn it off for five seconds when you want to turn it off fully, though, then that's fine.

I guess I'm just one of those people that doesn't care about wasting a bit of electricity for the sake of convenience. Having two kids that want everything in the entire house switched on all the time might have something to do with it.

Well if you put your ps4 into standby mode you can't turn it off without first turning it back on and then selecting shutdown. The xbox one like the 360 allows you to turn it off without having to do a full shut down.

Has anyone used the Amazon Instant Video app? Just setting up my new Xbox, and thought I'd give it a go. Every time I try to play a video, I get an error message saying I've lost internet connection. I definitely haven't though. What's going on?

Started getting that tonight too. Been fine before now.

Anybody managed to get the hidden high setting working for Streaming on Windows10? I made the change and it didn't show the extra setting so I've changed IsInternal to true and isPublic to false but still no dice.

Yeah, I was using it earlier, connected via Ethernet. Impressive.

As Wiper mentioned the PS4 lets you power down from rest mode by holding down the power button. If I understand you, you just power off your xbox one at the wall without shutting it down at all - is that sensible?

You might need to reboot the xbox app. I got it to work mostly fine over wired gigabit, bit choppy in places but only for a few seconds at a time.
