Xbox on Windows 10

First up, new features for the Xbox on Windows 10 app:

  • My Games – As you install games from the Windows Store, they will appear in your My Games list. Additionally, you can manually add games to your collection by selecting My games > Add a game from your PC. Also, there is now a Featured games section on the home screen, below your Recently played list.
  • Game hubs – You can now launch a local PC game from its game hub, view details about the game in the Windows Store, and find and follow People to Watch for a given game. Additionally, for Xbox One games, you can now choose Play from console to initiate a game streaming session from a game hub page.
  • Share with your friends – You can share your achievements to your Activity feed and Showcase just like you do on Xbox One. You can also share your Xbox One Game clips or Screenshots listed under Game DVR > Shared to your Activity Feed and Showcase.
  • Xbox avatars – We renamed the Avatars app on Windows 10 to Xbox Avatars and the layout and iconography have been updated to final designs. In this month’s preview, there is a “Take a photo” feature so you can pose your avatar and snap a photo.
  • Xbox account – In preview, you can sign in to Xbox on Windows 10 with any account, and create a new Xbox account if you do not already have one.

You will need Build 10158 of Windows 10 installed on your PC, then the Xbox on Windows 10 app should automatically update to the new preview version when it becomes available in the Windows Store. Once you receive the update, your version number should be 6.6.27004.00000 or higher. You can verify the version number of the Xbox on Windows 10 app under Settings.

Xbox One Preview

Please continue sending your feedback on the two amazing new features we launched in Xbox One preview earlier this month – Xbox One Backward Compatibility and game streaming. In addition, the team is continuing to test the Miracast functionality in the Wireless Display app and appreciates your patience while we iron out the kinks.

Stay tuned for more great Xbox features coming your way on Xbox One and Xbox on Windows 10. And don’t forget to let us know what you think at Xbox Feedback. For more information about the latest system update, check out Xbox Wire.

They'd have their direct competitor bent over a table with it's trousers around it's ankles when it comes to the next iteration of home consoles ensuring they'd never have to endure the embarrasment of not having the most powerful console on the block next time around.

They would have relicense x86.

I've just spent about the last 20 minutes watching some random twitcher on the store page trying to complete a level on 'Q'. Never heard of it before today, but it looks like worth the fiver just to do what he couldn't do. It might well be shit, but I likes the looks of it.

I was thinking they should replace Kinect as a pack in with like a little microphone thing that you can pop next to your telly and use all the Kinect functions. I can't think of a single decent thing Kinect does that involves the camera, other than reading QR codes so you don't have to type them.

Well personally I think it's great for Skype. It's much better sitting back on the couch with the camera tracking you, than sitting in front of a pc or using a phone.

I picked up a second Kinect off Avforums for £35. I don't think that is too bad at all for the voice commands and Skype.

Put it in the controller.

Nah. Part of the niceness of voice commands is not having to turn the controller on.

For now a simple plug in thing via USB would be fine. THen maybe integrate it into the console for future hardware revisions.

The only thing to consider is whether the voice recognition is taking up any processing on the Kinect and whether that can be moved to the console. I'm sure I read somewhere that the Kinect has it's own CPU. Not sure if that was mainly for the tracking stuff though.

I thought removing Kinect freed up 10% more CPU for other things?

Put it in the controller.

controller isn't always switched on so it wouldnt be "listening" for "xbox on".

I have to admit the voice control is pretty nifty.

I also now have a lounge big enough for the camera part, it's still useless for controlling the OS but are there an kid friendly kinect games cheap or demo as my 4 yr old might get some joy out of it. I know it's dead in terms of new development but were any toy type games developed before MS dropped it?

as far as I recall the dev can "claim back" most of the 10% reserved by kinect for camera etc by not using it... but there is a base level of kinect processing which remains for voice. You can tell because voice controls always work in all games in terms of telling xbox to go home or snap stuff(ugh) or xbox record that etc.
