Xbox One Console Thread

I've been playing round with an Xbox One for the past week and the thing that's struck me the most is how long games take to install. It's much, much faster on PS4.

They use very different methods, the PS4 essentially plays from disc, but any data that is loaded becomes part of the install for future re-use.

The Xbox requires the data to be installed before it is used.

With PS4 You get an increase in the game bring ready to play, but this comes at with increased in game load time (first load) and extra disc drive noise.

No you just need a friend with an Xbox One and you alternate buying games off the US/HK/India store and you both end up with a copy of the game for about £15 each. It's the reason my Bone pile of shame is borderline ridiculous. Christ I remember picking up the edition of Sunset Overdrive with the season pass for cheaper than what you could get just the game for from anywhere. Then that cost was halved again.

Here's Phil Spencer saying Xbox One install times need to improve from January 2014

Here's Phil Spencer in October 2014 saying it is saying that install times are still significantly worse than PS4 and changing that is high on his priority list

You or your source seemed to have carefully missed the part during the Oct interview where he mentions that some third party games install faster on the Bone now but that they were working hard to make it a better experience all around. No one was denying that it wasn't an issue.

You're still ignoring the fact that for some, a 15Gb update is unacceptable. I have a 5meg connection. Something like that takes forever. My suggestion to pre load patches should be adopted.

This might be true, but it's not an Xbox One Exclusive problem.

I believe the difference is negligible now.

You only have to google xbox one install times to see this is still an issue. Phil Spencer has said it is one of his top priorities to fix. Incidentally, other than his quote that some games actually installed faster than ps4 in their internal testing, I can see absolutely no anecdotal evidence to back that up from a quick google search, but there are hundreds and hundreds of reports of games installing slower on Xbox One.

If you buy me a copy of Phantom Pain on both PS4 and the Bone I'll test it out for you. You'll also noticed I used the past tense in your first quote. It was a real issue during the launch window but then the smart sexy people ditched discs.

This is a good idea, after all it's the same as pre-loading but without the unlock key. I wonder if they think it is worth the effort though? Have you made the suggestion on the preview dash forum?

What are the chances that we'll see whatever Twisted Pixel have been working on tomorrow?

After Lococycle it's hard to get excited about them but they must have something in the works.

How am I talking pish? Admittedly I haven't tried installed anything on the Xbox One that I've previously installed on my PS4 for a direct comparison, but in general on PS4 I'm playing a game within a couple of minutes of putting the disc in, whereas on Xbox One it's half an hour at the very least, and in the case of Dead Rising 3 it was almost 2 hours. And this is with a fibre connection.

If that's your experience then you aren't talking pish, soz. I buy my shit digital these days on XB1 and play my ps4 infrequently, but I found install / load / times to be brutal when I first gave bloodborne a whirl. Although the infrequent console use might have been the culprit for all the updates now I think about it ha! Soz, again.

Is the PS4 as shit as this thing when it comes to actually getting to play the fucking games you've stumped up a fortune for (relatively new owner, don't know how usual this bollocks is)? If it's not I might switch systems before I get too invested in the console: Finally got Elder Scrolls Online yesterday morning and knew there was a massive patch to download (despite it coming out less than a week ago) so thought I'd get it installing before I had to head out. But before I could do that I had to hang around for 20 minutes and make myself late because there was another bloody console update to install first. Finally get that done, get the game patch installing an head out. When I get home the machine has switched itself off. I boot it back up and it's got to 78% and decided it's "Ready to launch". Presumably this is the state that made it decide it's time to shut down. Still can't play the fucking game though; despite being able to launch the game to the menu you need the full 100% to actually play it. So I set it downloading again, and four hours later it's got to 84%. I go to bed, hopeful it will have finished by morning. Wake up, machine's off; hopefully a good sign. Boot it up. It's got to fucking 86% and shut down. FUCK YOU MICROSOFT. Now I've searched online and discovered the default setting for this piece of shit is "turn off automatically after one hour of inactivity", with it presumably not counting downloading something you need to actually play a fucking game as activity. Now looking at a vague chance I might get to play for an hour or so before bed, if I'm lucky. :quote::omg::facepalm::hmm:

Use Instant On mode instead.

Problem solved.

Might as well stick with this thing then. Why did it all get so shit? The 360 used to do small speedy downloads once in a blue moon, which is why there appeared to be no need to have it merely going to stand by and being able to automatically do downloads in the background. Now the default seems to be massive giant downloads all the time that go at 56k speed (with them apparently not counting as "activity", which I would have thought they would even if I had seen that setting before)

My downloads come down really fast. I've not had these issues.

I much prefer the Xbox approach.

I'd much rather have a longer install time if everything from there on out is quicker and quieter.

Not sure what EvilBoris was getting at, but both Xbox and PS4 install the game fully to the harddrive and when you play the game the console is only ever using the installed data. It's just that the process of installing the data is much faster on PS4. PS4 is better at installing a subset of the game first to let you start playing before it is fully installed, but at no point is it "playing from the disc"

No. I only thought of it today and I'm not on that forum. Feel free to post it there though.

Just as an aside, I know this isn't an One exclusive, it's just that this is where the discussion seemed to be happening.

And finally, isn't all the pre E3 excitement going on in the relevant conference thread to keep this one free of that talk?

Xbox One allows you to play the game before it's fully installed.

I know, I didn't mean to imply otherwise, but from my limited experience I get the impression way more needs to be installed on Xbox One before you can start playing. Broadly speaking there isn't much different in the way games are installed on the two systems (from an end users point of view) other than the time it takes, so I'm not sure why anyone would say they prefer the way Xbox does it.

Anyway, I think that's enough installation talk.
