I've just run through the Bloody Baron quest line and how anyone can think that anything released this year will be better than Witcher 3 is beyond me. I don't think we'll see anything as impressive in a long time and I can finally see why people are worried that Fallout 4 will seem lifeless in comparison.

Is the PS4 as shit as this thing when it comes to actually getting to play the fucking games you've stumped up a fortune for (relatively new owner, don't know how usual this bollocks is)? If it's not I might switch systems before I get too invested in the console: Finally got Elder Scrolls Online yesterday morning and knew there was a massive patch to download (despite it coming out less than a week ago) so thought I'd get it installing before I had to head out. But before I could do that I had to hang around for 20 minutes and make myself late because there was another bloody console update to install first. Finally get that done, get the game patch installing an head out. When I get home the machine has switched itself off. I boot it back up and it's got to 78% and decided it's "Ready to launch". Presumably this is the state that made it decide it's time to shut down. Still can't play the fucking game though; despite being able to launch the game to the menu you need the full 100% to actually play it. So I set it downloading again, and four hours later it's got to 84%. I go to bed, hopeful it will have finished by morning. Wake up, machine's off; hopefully a good sign. Boot it up. It's got to fucking 86% and shut down. FUCK YOU MICROSOFT. Now I've searched online and discovered the default setting for this piece of shit is "turn off automatically after one hour of inactivity", with it presumably not counting downloading something you need to actually play a fucking game as activity. Now looking at a vague chance I might get to play for an hour or so before bed, if I'm lucky. :quote::omg::facepalm::hmm:

It asks you on initial boot up if you want it to use energy saving or instant on mode which facilitates downloading whilst powered down if you were unable to absorb that information when it was presented to you you're going to struggle further in future.

Sell it and get a ps2 or GameCube.

They both have a similar set up in that regard yeah.

You can change the auto standby time though to avoid it in future, that being said, I think it should carry on whilst in standby anyway. As you needed a dashboard update too, is yours not set for instant on?

Might as well stick with this thing then. Why did it all get so shit? The 360 used to do small speedy downloads once in a blue moon, which is why there appeared to be no need to have it merely going to stand by and being able to automatically do downloads in the background. Now the default seems to be massive giant downloads all the time that go at 56k speed (with them apparently not counting as "activity", which I would have thought they would even if I had seen that setting before)

I suppose the key is to try and disassociate release (or purchase) day with the expectation of actually getting to play a game. Rushing home and settling down to play is no longer a thing. It simply marks the beginning a 48 hour build up, where getting to have a go any sooner should be treated as a bonus.

Which is only a problem if you're buying retail discs. Those who have switched to digital have the game installed a week before release and more often than not fully patched up.

Aside from Puyo Puyo Tetris I've not bought a disc since launch. The initial set up of the console these days is a huge hassle though, you're right on that one. No more plug and play.

Speaking of updates, just got what I assume is the pre-E3 preview update whilst playing the Witcher. Popped up that it was time to update, I declined and carried on with my game before saving and setting it off. At least that aspect is much better this time around. I remember frequently getting kicked mid game with no warning on 360 because an update had been pushed through.

How am I talking pish? Admittedly I haven't tried installed anything on the Xbox One that I've previously installed on my PS4 for a direct comparison, but in general on PS4 I'm playing a game within a couple of minutes of putting the disc in, whereas on Xbox One it's half an hour at the very least, and in the case of Dead Rising 3 it was almost 2 hours. And this is with a fibre connection.

Enjoy your massively inflated digital prices!

What would be a good alternative would be a system where you could alert the system that you were going to buy a game physically then it would download any patches at that point. Then when you bought the game, all it would have to do is install the patch that you had pre downloaded. I don't see why the system has to wait for you to insert a disk before it knows to download something.
