Xbox One Console Thread

Do you seriously think they shouldn't have announced it?

Those have to be up there with the strangest digs at the Xbox yet.

It's not a dig at the Xbox. I really liked my Xbox before it was stolen, and as soon as I can I'll be getting a new one.

But having said that, I really don't see anything worth announcing about it. To me it seems like the kind of iteration that doesn't really get 'announced' in the way this was. It seems like the sort of thing that's usually just quietly rolled out in the normal minor hardware revision way. The sort of thing that gets discovered through a listing on a retailer's website, gets picked up by the games press and the platform holder confirms in a brief press release.

I don't know. Seems like it's just me, but it's a really underwhelming announcement. "Look at this! Exciting! A bigger hard drive in a console that already supports much bigger hard drives! A controller with a different socket even though there was nothing wrong with the socket on the original controller and you could buy an adapter to make this sort of socket work anyway! " just really underwhelming to me.

Again, not a dig at the console, which I really like. But when I replace my stolen one, I won't be rushing to get a 1TB version if, as Sean says, I can buy a 500GB version and a 1.5TB external drive as cheaply.

I daresay this is why I'm not head of strategy at Xbox.

As for the bumpers thing, I had no idea people had any problems with them.

Edit: I guess, to me, this feels like Samsung or someone excitedly announcing a new version of an existing tv that has one more HDMI port. It's certainly not a bad thing, but like this, it would make me shrug and think that it wasn't worth announcing.

As I said above, there's nothing wrong with iterating and improving, I just find it surprising that the existing bumpers were the outcome of a $100 million re-design that included huge amounts of user testing, when the bumpers on the 360 pad were often criticised.

I always thought the problem with the 360 bumpers was how bloody eager they were to break if you dropped the controller. I had to replace the bumpers on 3 or 4 of my 360 controllers. Bigger issue for the 360 controllers was the stick drift. The Xbox One controller seems a lot more sturdy to me. I don't have any stick drift on any of my Xbox One controllers yet, and no problems with the bumpers at all. Mind you, I reckon the constant right/left stick clicking to scan the environment on Dragon Age would get those sticks drifting in no time.

I've had stick drift - if you get it it's generally upwards and in my case I reckon it was dropping the pad on a wooden floor that did it. Got it switched out at Game without question.

I put this "announcement" (I'd hardly call it that it's just a video saying look this is coming) in here as I didn't consider it worthy of a whole thread. It's quite obviously going to phase out the existing 0.5tb model so Scribblor should get a good deal when he goes for one of them.

No problem with the bumpers here either - if that's the only issue some people have while other pads have to be reverse engineered to implant a new battery with a decent life and better non-degrading analogue sticks I think they've done a good job.

Oh Jon. Of course it's good that they're being improved. This isn't about digs at the Xbox (I own two of the controllers), it's about wondering how the current bumpers (which are okay but could have been greatly improved like the other elements of the pad were) made it through in the first instance when spending $100 million.

I think they should have got them right the first time, especially considering they were one of the worst parts of the 360 controller after the D-pad, and was under the impression MS thought they were spot-on as they are.

Oh Phil. They probably just got to a point in development where they ran out of time to keep perfecting it and needed to get it ready for launch. They'd have been working to a deadline. Since then they've obviously been listening to feedback and continued to push it, which surely can only be interpreted as a good thing.

As for the announcement, to me it just seems like they're trying to be as transparent as possible with customers, to make sure the correct info gets out there, especially after the E3 reveal debacle. I wouldn't read anything more into it.

I don't get the issues with an "announcement" for this. Major Nelson is all about promoting the little things, do we really need him to do a monthly vid of the upcoming changes to the dash? Not really, but he does and it is welcome for a lot of people. It's as if a youtube video is seen as some big marketing push. I'd be more surprised if they didn't have a short announcement vid.

As for the bumpers, I had an issue with them for about the first week. They didn't seem to be registering at all, but I think I adjusted my finger position and it worked. Was a bit annoying that I had to change the way my hand was positioned, but now it's second nature and I don't even think about it. But iteration is good, so long as my new finger position still works!

Anybody thinking about getting one of those pads might want to hold off until after E3 there might be something else coming down the line.

You know something? I'll be getting an Xbox One when Halo 5 comes out, along with Tomb Raider. Hoping for some kind of special edition, maybe even a 2 tb model. For those who own both machines, is there noticeable difference power wise between One and PS4?

Nope.

There's been rumours for a while about a 'professional' pad so who knows what that will entail. It may just have been someone jumping the gun and making more/lost in translation about the new altered pad that's recently been shown.

If you have a look at the sites that really compare multi-platform games then yes you'll see a difference when they pause a game and zoom in on shadows etc. The PS4 has the better graphics chip. Actually playing in game the difference isn't really noticeable to me. I've got GTA V on both and it's great on both. Like Mr Do says. the PS4 version has more grass in some out of city areas.

When I buy a multiplatform game now I just consider where my friends will be playing it and buy on that platform. Right now the PS4 is my Battlefield 4 machine (as that's where the Battlefield crowd went) and Xbox One for everything else.

I didn't know he did monthly dashboard vids. I've just watched a couple. I don't see the point in them either. But at least they're focusing on features you already have access to and might not know about.

As I said earlier though, this is just my personal opinion. I don't have a problem with the console or Microsoft. I'm not complaining about it. Just saying that I find the video underwhelming.

I think you read far too much into my original comment; I never said they shouldn't have announced the new variant or the improvements they've made - that was other people. I just expressed surprise (as did others in this thread at launch) that the bumpers on the current controller are less than optimal considering the lengths they clearly went to with the overall re-design. You're quite possibly right in your suggestions of why that might be. I've used the bumper jumper pilot control scheme for over 40 hours of Titanfall, so they're serviceable anyway :)

And of course publicly improving is to be applauded - I'd like to see Sony follow suit and improve the DS4 Options and Share buttons. Oh, and their "customer service" too ;)

I get what you mean. $100 million to design it is a lot of money and it would have been nice if those bumpers were better in the first place (at least, for the people who don't like them). I guess though, that not only did they have a deadline to hit, but they won't have tested them anywhere near as much as they have been now that consumers have had them in their hands for the last 18 months, and probably weren't fully aware of the problems that some people have had. At least they're listening to their customers though, eh?

Signal Studios is getting ready to release its next toy-themed tower defense title Toy Soldiers - War Chest. Last time out, we were transported back to the 1980s and fought as Rambo. This time, Ubisoft is digging deep into that same era for more nostalgia.

Ubisoft has licensed He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and G.I. Joe are at your disposal when the game launches this summer. Two more licensed properties are also planned for the game's Hall of Fame edition.

And Spectra now has a release date of July the 10th!
