Xbox One Console Thread

I have no "axe to grind" with Microsoft at all. I mean, I'm typing this on PC running Windows using a Microsoft keyboard with a Windows Phone device in my pocket! I just thought they were getting away with murder with Xbox Live, where they were charging ~£40/yr for very little on their end.

You keep saying it's very little, but on the basis of their competition it's clearly not as simple as that sounds. The most important thing is that it reliably works, if anyone else could contend with that then they wouldn't have been able to charge for anything.

"Getting away with murder" is charging £3-odd a month to play online with the occasional perk of an exclusive demo?

:D Thing is MS invested in creating the libraries, creating the OS to support stable online play etc and most of all it worked. I have had some great times on XBL over the years. Sure PSN was free on the PS3 but in comparison? Well lets say XBL was great value for money. It made online console gaming accessible and reliable with voice chat.

Sure it may seem "expensive" in relative terms (PC, free, PS+ free games etc) but in the grand scheme of things? £40 per year? This wouldn't even get you a night out in the town these days....

Plus who actually paid £40 a year for live? I was paying roughly £25 a year which, as people have said, was more than fine for a service that gave me so many laughs over the years.

Well that as well! Think most I've ever paid is £30. Even when I first subbed to Live I got a 12months sub with Project Gotham Racing 2 for £30.... And that came with a headset!

Last time I renewed (October when I got my XBO) I paid £25 for the year... (cdkeys)... :)

It's an idiom, and don't forget all the online services they locked behind a paywall too.

Well, that's not what people were saying when the PS3 was $599 while the Xbox 360 was still having RROD issues!

Perhaps that's part of my perspective on the issue. £40 is a lot of money to me. If you earn a lot then you probably have a different perspective.

Well if £40 sounds like a lot of money , then how do you intend to buy any console within 10 year of it coming out?

Indeed or games for the console? £40 is the price of one game.

Don't think that's excessive TBH but yeah its expensive if you don't see any value in it. Like you say matter of personal perspective as to what value is on anything.

...well, since you asked, I generally don't.

But I'm eying getting a second-hand Xbox One because I have a little money plus, since I could never afford to buy a 360, I've never played Halo 3/4, so the MCC seems like a reasonable deal.

So thanks for asking, I guess?

Well, £40 is the price of a new game on console at retail. Wait until the price comes down (PC is good for this), buy second-hand games, sell older games to get newer ones and buy older stuff rather than new stuff.

Well yeah I know but just saying in the grand scheme of things gaming is a cheap hobby vs the amount of entertainment you get per hour. And that XBL gives you plenty of entertainment value for £40 of course if it represents good value to you.

Also you'd have to be particularly thrifty to genuinely think £40 over the course of a year is a lot of money, at least when it comes to gaming. Even when I was on minimum wage, paying London rent and living off noodles and toast I could still afford Xbox Live. Hell, I needed it then more than ever, probably the most cost-effective £3 I could have spent.

Live essentially didn't work for me for most of the 360s life. For reasons Microsoft where totally unable to answer until they figured out 3 years later it was something to do with my account status and I had to pretty much delete my profile and redownload it every time I wanted to use Live.

Suffice to say I don't think I got my moneys worth.

I'd have personally created a new account after the 3rd month of fucking about. Did that not work for you?

creating other users though... they're either EatingSeanR(n) where n is a number, or I have to use email addresses to sign them up and THEN they get assigned random (read shit) gamertags (not that it matters), but still.

this OS is horrible.

My microsoft accounts are all over the place. I had to create one to use a windows 8 laptop in summer, the xbone demanded an account to use on setup so i gave it that one. it created a brand new gamertag even though i thought they were linked, I have my gamertag now on the xbone which has my old stuff, but i cant sign in to the web store with it on a pc, and the free 14 day live trial i entered on the new made up tag doesnt work with the other gamertag on the same machine. So are families really expected to all pay the gold charge per tag on the same box? That seems highly dubious and cheeky. Sony digital accounts are just as useless but I expected better from ms.

I have a 360, have a surface tablet, windows phone and recently got a XBox One.

All of them work fine on the same .live.co.uk account I created. I think the gamertag is unique to the XBox so I'm guessing if you previously didn't have a gamertag associated with your MS account (.live.co.uk one) then it probably thinks that this is a new account and needs one.

Its great as I get my content everywhere via OneDrive... take a piccy on my phone and I can see it on any device or the MS web portal. Smartglass is quite nice and handy at times to knock the odd message out on XBL.

It all works very well indeed from my experience.... Not to say that I might just be lucky though :D ....

Is there anything at all you like about it yet, Sean?

the amazon prime app? dropping in and out of games and stuff? Take last night. Flicking between Scandal season 2 and AC Unity, on demand, no loading time. Fucking lush.

This is some C class trolling going on here.

stop doing it then, duh!

i thought I had it linked but it seems not, but it seems to be ok on the machine itself now. Windows 8 is still weird though.

Create a new admin user on Windows 8 and use the same login details you used on your Xbox. Also have a windows 8 box that I use the same account on too.

Probably just got out of sync somewhere.

What was really nice is that Windows Live stuff remembers all your settings - so for example when I got the Surface it just pulled all the stuff from my windows 8 PC and I instantly had the same background pictures etc.

For the record Sonys stuff IMHO from experience is an order of magnitude worse. I have a Vita and (had) a PS4 and the messages that were sent through PSN from friends etc would just vanish or not get sent. Or sometimes turn up a day or so after?! :) It's insane given that Sony make both the devices and run the network. I could understand if it was different OS's/manufacturers devices involved....

It is... But So is Sony's and that is rubbish in comparison. Have a vita and had a PS4 and a Sony smartphone.... It was a horrible mess of things not working together... :)

I guess Sony are focussed purely on gaming though so kind of understandable.
