Pardew signs an 8 year contract. 8 years! Imagine if he gets sacked - he'd get another job pretty quickly and be completely minted.

If he gets sacked, he won't be allowed to take another job without forfeiting the outstanding money on his contract.

(AIUI, officially and legally managers don't get sacked, they are relieved of their duties. So they remain employees until their contract ends or compensation is negotiated.)

I sat next to Alan Pardew in Cafe Rouge at Gatwick Airport at the beginning of the summer.

He had a pair of ratty Puma trainers and left a paltry tip for the waiter. Hopefully his new 8 year contract will go some way to ensuring that Pards doesn't have to ever shuffle awkwardly out of a Cafe Rouge in an airport ever again.

Yes but managers get a whole heap of compensation that's likely to be very close to what they would have earned. Harry Redknapp had the equivalent of about four lots of wages coming in at once at one point.

8 years is one hell of a contract - if he's on £1m a year without bonuses, that's a big investment for a manager.

I think he's brilliant for Newcastle - sometimes, managers and teams just click,

'I saw a headline saying Arsenal are flying the flag for Britain in the Champions League, but I had to wonder where that British involvement was when I saw the team,' said Pardew.

'There was a big commotion when that first happened and it shouldn't be washed under the mat again.

'Every English club should carry at least three British players in the first team. The foreign players have added massively to our game, but the soul of the club is the homegrown players and they should be integrated into that team.

'It is important we don't lose sight that this is the English Premier League and English players should be involved. I know it is difficult to buy British players because the market is expensive.

'Chelsea are in a position where they can pay over the odds to bring in those players whereas we have had to search through the lower divisions to do that and Dean Ashton was the only player we had to pay top money for.'

Good on them for rewarding him and seeking the stability Ferguson and Wenger have brought. I'm really liking the set up at Newcastle after years of negative feelings for that club.

I'm so very close to agreeing with that, as I appreciate that it's a great gesture and seeking the stability that's lead to success elsewhere is admirable... but why not just give him a slightly less outlandish contract and then seek to renew it as and when it's been earned?

Have Wenger or Ferguson actually ever been given a similarly lengthy contract themselves, even with both having done much more than Pardew to deserve one? I'm pretty sure Wenger at least hasn't, though I'm not sure...

Heskey fever!

(from Yahoo)

Fans of Australian side Newcastle Jets are so excited about the signing of new striker Emile Heskey that they have sold out of replica shirts.

The former England international was a free-agent after being released by Aston Villa in the summer and the 34-year-old has decided to relaunch his career Down Under.

Despite not even arriving at the New South Wales club yet, fans have quickly snapped up his number nine replica shirt and the club have been forced to order 5,000 more shirts after their initial stock sold-out.

I like the big lummox really but, yeah, he's hardly a player to be too excited about. Mind you, nine goals was enough for Fowler to be Perth's top scorer (thanks Wiki!) so maybe Heskey doesn't need to be brilliant, just not completely shite.

I can't put my finger on it but there is something about Pardew that means I wouldn't trust him and I don't like him.......I bet he thinks highly of me as well!

well he allegedly got sacked at West Ham for gross misconduct due to him banging Roy Carroll' missus, while his own wife was in hospital being treated for cancer. So you might just be a very good judge of character.

That's not exactly true. He was alleged to have been knobbing Carl Fletcher's wife, and also alleged to have gotten a receptionist at the club up the swanny - while his wife was sick with cancer.

He was also said to have allegedly upset the contingent of Marlon Harewood, Bobby Zamora and Nigel Reo-Coker by turning up to training in a spanking new Ferrari and giving it the large; apparently it 'disrespected' them as only they should have been doing it
