Football Thread 2012/13

Barcelona is an odd one though, their ground is so huge (98k capacity) that if you use the percentage full chart as your barometer to measure how well supported they are then it looks quite bad because it completely ignores the fact that their 84k average gate from last season was the highest in European football.

Then again there's only really Barca and Espanyol to support if you live in the area, on the other hand there's very little away support in Spain. Also there's no way the Emirates was 99.5% full on Saturday, I'd have said more like 95% - I'm sure the same holds true for other grounds in England. In short - I'm not sure you can draw any meaningful conclusions here, at least not for another month or so.

I'm just a translator for this thread now, I think.

He said "Are there" not "Are these". Can we compare them to last year to see what change there has been?

Sorry will teach me to try and work at the same time. No comparable figures as far as i'm aware.

Pretty good little programme just on BBC2, 'The Boss Is Back' - this one is with Theo Paphitis, mostly about Millwall. Pretty interesting to see behind the scenes at a Championship/League 1 club.

Also, carrying on from Nayson's post let's get Skillz Friday started early. There was a filler show on ITV with just highlights of some ECL finals on recently, I'd forgotten what a fucking fantastic goal Hernan Crespo's second against Liverpool was in 2005.

Kaka was the bomb. Such a shame what's happened to him at Madrid.

And after playing well for 55 minutes, madrid get a goal from a set piece then open up and get torn a new arse by barca. Mourinho will no doubt be livid after they were so solid in the first half

EDIT: oof what was Valdes thinking!

I just posted these links in the Spurs thread and I don't think they were posted here.

The data Man City released presented in a few interactive sheets by the Guardian.

It's definitely quite interesting to anyone who wonders if a Moneyball approach to football is viable. Though I am not sure 'first touch' is working as intended here...

And be sure to check out Steven Fletcher in the goalscorer comparison, £12 million looks a decent deal with that ratio!

I'd point out that nothing regarding Terry has really changed yet since the Euros and as such you wouldn't expect Hodgson to change his policy, regardless of what you thought about it way back when he announced his first squad. But then I'd be entertaining Disciple's ramblings, so I won't. No sir.

Except he's now actually been charged by the FA, so there has been a certain change. Effectively the organisation that picks him/sanctions him for England matches - has allowed him to play despite them believing he's guilty of racism.

Usually if someone is under a pending charge from their employers they'll usually be suspended. In this case Terry plays on.

If anyone wants to make a bit of cash on the betting tomorrow put some money on Oxford to win against Plymouth and for Oxford to keep a clean sheet. We've played six games against league opposition in friendlies x 3, league games x 2 and a league cup game and only scored 3. We scored all 3 against Portsmouth in the League Cup but they fielded an entire team of under 18s (apart from one guy who is a coach and a retired player). We haven't scored a goal against league opposition at all and Oxford have won both their opening games, are at home and hammered us last season. It's 4/6 with Paddy Power just for Oxford to win. Oxford keeping a clean sheet is 6/5.

I don't often bet and I never bet when I'm skint (I am at the moment) but I'd put £100 on Oxford to win if I had a bit in the bank. It's an easy £60.

Shut up Dinobot - I forgot you existed during the close season and now you're back like herpes.

Good to see you think it's fine. I was hoping new season new start yet such idiot covering of your eyes is pretty pathetic.

Troll away child, child.

This is brilliant :D

With these new attacking options I wonder if Sunderland will dare venture into the opposition's half in away games or just continue committing crimes against football like last weekend?

I don't quite understand that. They're not one of the top 6 clubs and they were away at the Emirates. What is Martin O'Neill supposed to do? They wouldn't expect to get 3 points away at Arsenal, they'd be expected to lose so he played for a point and that's what he got. In the Premier League, every point counts when you're one of those bottom half sides - Bolton went down with 36 and West Brom finished 10th with 11 points more than that. It's quite feasible that, at the end of the season, that 1 point that they wouldn't expect to get could keep Sunderland in the Premier League. It's a point gained rather than two points lost.

Sunderland are a side that do well at home and revert to a more defensive line-up away. I'm not sure what they're expected to do. Only one side from recent memory went gung-ho all season and that was Blackpool and they were relegated. It was good to watch but I suspect their fans, chairman and their accountant would have rather they parked the bus and got the odd point away to keep them in the Premier League.

I disagree, just look how Reading played against Chelsea this week. They went all out for the win and even bought on another striker at 2-2.

Yeah they ended up with no points but it was only a stupid goal keeper error and a offside goal that stopped them getting at least 1 point. Also the last time Reading were in the Premier League, in their first season when they finished 8th they more or less went for a win in every game, yes they suffered some heavy defeats, but their attacking attitude gave them enough wins to only finish 1 or 2 points from making the Europa League.

Sadly its all about the money these days and I think some teams have forgotten it is supposed to be entertainment at the end of the day.
