Project 4k80 has finally been completed (scanning in an original 35mm print of ESB and fixing it up) after several years. They’ve only made a Beta version available for now, to get feedback before releasing the final 1080p and 2160p versions.

When are they doing The Phantom Menace then? I want the original theatrical cut god damn it!

(I know this will never happen.)

What was edited in The Phantom Menace? I thought he only changed the originals to make them fit more with the prequels. Was he even dissatisfied with the prequels by the end?

2001 DVD

Several deleted scenes are added into the film:

Several introductions of other racers are included.
Footage of the second lap in the Pod Race was reinserted.
Removal of a scene of Watto screaming, "SEBULBA!"
An air taxi sequence was reinserted after the arrival on Coruscant.

2011 Blu-ray

The scene composition affected by image magnification in the original DVD release was restored bringing around 8% more picture to the frame.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi's Force speed effect was redone to look more realistic.

A close-up shot of Nute Gunray and Rune Haako watching a viewscreen showing the Jedi escaping was replaced for a wide shot with a new effect for the screen itself.

The puppet version of Yoda was replaced with a CGI version as in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

An effects error causing Fode and Beed's hand to pass through their vest was fixed.

Right after Jabba the Hutt's introduction before the podrace a new voice is heard from a spectator when the camera is focused on the crowd.

Calls from the Senate to "Vote now!" when Queen Amidala puts forward a motion of no confidence have been replaced with the sound of a general uproar.

The original theatrical cut was only ever released on VHS, VCD and a Japanese Laserdisc. The 2001 DVD and every release after were the altered versions (Longer Pod Race etc.)

True, but it serves as a reminder of how unrepresentative movie nerds like us are, when even the full title of one of the most famous films ever made is known by such a tiny proportion of people!

If I was asked what Star Wars term would be known by so few people, I'd assume it'd be something like "Coruscant" or "Mon Mothma" - not "A New Hope".

As another example: I'm not sure if it was the same episode, but also this week there was a round with questions about Casablanca - one of the questions was what decade it was released, and the correct answer was worth a surprisingly small number of points. (The contestant guessed the 1950s.) Seems obvious to me, but then, I'm a weirdo who wastes his life making movie lists on Letterboxd.

(Having said that, the low numbers who got New Year's Day and New Leaf suggest that the people sampled in this particular Pointless poll were not the sharpest bunch.)

A lot of rumours flying around that all these TV series are leading up to a movie trilogy based on Timothy Zhans Heir To The Empire that will be Disney+ exclusive.

While I'm looking forward to the concept of Luuuuuuke (as in Dark Empire was crap and then the absolute madlads did it but worse for Episode 9 and I'm here with popcorn ready for what they're about to perpetrate here) I can't help but feel that lots of that trilogy needs enormous reworking to fit in new (or even existing) canon. Ysalamiri, the whole clone backstory, etc.

If they do this it will just be Marvel style where they pick and choose bits from the comics.

Which was absolutely for the best there and would be here too.

There’s another animated show on the way. Bugger all details yet, it was just mentioned by the composer Kevin Kiner in an interview.

Quote

You know, we are working on a new project. It’s an animated project. It’s a Star Wars project. And that’s all we can say. It’s really, really frikkin’ great… To the point where Lucasfilm and Disney are giving us full orchestra for every episode… It’s a very special project, some great, great people are involved, and we’re really privileged to be part of that one. And I probably said too much already.

Be careful what you ask for or we'll get the origin story of the Trade Federation.

I would watch it. A soap opera on Kato Nemoidia would be hilarious.

"What? You're pwegnant! This is impossible!"

"We should not have made this bargain!"

Wat Tambor enters stage left.

"I am *bweeoobeep* the father!"

They need to do something pre-Phantom Menace. The timeline around Episodes I to IX has been done to death. There's so much to explore in the period before the main films.

I tend to agree.  TBF I've really enjoyed both the Mandalorian and TBOBF and they've managed to stretch out a lot more entertainment from this era than I thought I could take, but they need to move elsewhere now, be it a long time before or after and explore new characters, worlds, etc.

Hell - I'd bloody love to see KOTOR as an animated series.

Is KOTOR still considered canon? I'm playing through it for the first time currently and it seems like some of the Mandalore stuff might have been retconned now?

Nope, although there's a remake on the way that could well re-canonise some aspects of it.

The only pre-Disney stuff that survived their mass decanonisation were the movies and The Clone Wars cartoon. Everything else was shunted under the "Legends" banner.

At the time- having had no exposure to the expanded universe I didn't care about that.

Three sequel trilogy films later and I still haven't had any exposure to those Legends stories. But now I'm of the opinion that it was a massive mistake. Maybe they can retcon and invert the whole thing so that the Sequel Trilogy is now "Legends". And Solo.
