Does any other professional sport allow you to wear whatever you want? (At the moment)

Worth posting this follow up tweet though:

Ignoring players health concerns does however seem shitty. Any sport is nothing without the players.

She only wore it at the French open , though . She didn’t wear it at Wimbledon because there is a dress code , did Phillip Barnett, whoever he is, moan about that?. Should the French open not be allowed to have a dress code?

The difference there being that Wimbledon is infamous for being stuck up and for its dress code, and that dress code at least hasn't suddenly sprung up in reaction to a woman wearing a bodysuit for health reasons.

Why the fuck shouldn't a woman be allowed to wear a dark neoprene batsuit instead of a little skirt? Particularly if it helps with health issues? Why does everyone have a stick up their arse?

I really don't know, Illyria. Is it a gender issue?

Somehow I could imagine if a guy were to change his outfit for health reasons they might not throw such a fit. I don't know. What do you think?

Impossible to say without a precedent. Tennis is the only sport with equal pay ("b-b-b-but the girls do less sets for the same money" yeah yeah) so I'm less inclined to believe there's a sexist motive to this.

As I say I really don't have a clue, and this afternoon I've far exceeded my annual "time spent thinking about tennis" quota.

But it's in the wrong thread regardless which is UNACCEPTABLE.:blah:

"one must respect the game"

I don't understand what that means but clearly tiny little vests and crotch shots are more modest than a full body suit.

You've also got to remember this is the sport that got itself in a tizz because women grunting with effort gave the umpires a boner and was deemed too sexual.

Except that the only reason that women get equal pay is because the Women's Tennis Association fought for it tooth and nail against the Slams, and the only reason they still play three sets rather than five is because despite the WTA pushing for equal numbers of sets to be played the Slams have refused to concede that point. Which is to say, I have some trust that the associations will push for equality, but I have little trust in the Slams themselves, and it's specifically the latter taking this action.

Presumably a scheduling issue. They should do it for the semis and final at least, though.

The grunting wasn't a sexual thing though? Just a way to try and get an advantage and a bit annoying for spectators when taken to extremes.

I could understand it being required for health reasons if it were something she wears at every tournament she plays . But she doesn’t , she wears it extremely sporadically . And she herself has said it is mostly fun , but carries “ a little” medical benefit, and she wears other garments to provide the required support .  ( compression clothing etc are used to treat DVT) . So she could wear something less dramatic and it still have the same effect.

Of course twitter has turned this into it being critical to her health and she will die if she doesn’t wear it .

Personally I don’t care if she turns up dressed as a French hen but the accusations of racism are absolutely ridiculous .

Tennis has some odd rules , but they are not specifically aimed at one player, they all have to abide by whatever dress code the tournament decides  , it’s not like Serena is the only one banned from wearing a cat suit .

I think it's probably fair to say it's driven at least a little by Tennis' elitist image, and wanting to retain that. One for another thread how much of that might also be down to other -isms, mind you.

It's fucking ridiculous to me that in 2018 the world's greatest female tennis player can't wear whatever she thinks is she'd perform best in, though. Whether that's sexism, I don't know.

@PeteBrant So what's your solution? If you have a health problem with the normal wear, don't play because thems the rules?

Some options should be available, methinks.

There is no problem . She plays with “normal “ compression gear 90% of the time . People making a big deal out of this are idiots .

I was sure the horrifying stuff about the culture at Riot Games had been posted in this thread already, maybe I was wrong.

Anyhoo, King of the Dudebros, CliffyB, has decided to go to bat for them.

Fucking Cliff, man.  It sadness me to see that attitude of “I don’t know people it happened to”/“didn’t happen to me” therefore it didn’t happen is still so prevalent.

I’ve lost so much respect for him recently especially with his constant “woe is me” tweets about how he had to shut down his company.  And it’s always that - I lost my thing.  There’s no concern for his employees (well maybe a tweet at the time it closed, but I don’t recall it), there was that tweet complaining about Epic stealing his employees.  Dude is worth millions (estimated 40-50), he made 20m out of his early Oculus investment, he was a part owner in Epic when Tencent bought half of it.  Dude has money, but wasn’t willing to risk his own money to keep his company going.  Say what you like about Molyneux but he sold his multimillion quid mansion the EA money had bought to keep Lionhead going during a thought period.

Dunno about health reasons, but Wimbledon did change the dress code in the 90s in response to people like Agassi wearing white with large chucks of colour.

According to twitter she wore that for a single match, her opponent complained and she was told to change.

The French open can fuck off.  Wimbledon to for that matter.  Should there be a dress code, yeah probably but it should be

- nothing that brings the sport into disrepute

- nothing that gives a competitive advantage

- maybe an enforce colour

Serena’s outfit doesn’t seem to break any of them, but there should also be a clause for medical exceptions.

I wonder if anything would have been said if she wore her normal tennis gear over the top of this.  I’m reading on twitter from French game devs the way this is being covered by French media is to argue the short skirt is why people watch women’s tennis

I think you have to mentally account for autocorrect and predictive text, these days. I have to go back and fix half my posts.

It also seems to be a feature of iOS that autocorrect has a unique learning algorithm that ensures it gets worse the more you use it.

I had to download a different keyboard for Android as the default one had decided to start casually replacing correctly spelled words with completely different ones.
