Fair enough, post deleted. I figured it would also help the folks (recently: Broker) saying misoginy, basically that I follow all sorts of race, gender and cultures (when it comes to er, gaming) but if it's adding nothing I can't be arsed pondering if that's true any more. I'll apply the same rule to future posts. (aka delete if seen as pointless) Goodnight

Edit: first response also deleted. We may continue talking about KFC.

I can't even begin to work out why you'd watch a two and a half hour video about seemingly nothing more than some complete strangers badly delivered opinion on games and then tell us rather than the much shorter videos that the thread is about. I couldn't last longer than about 10 mins total with skipping through it.

If you think it's interesting, make a new thread or post it in the random video game thread but I just can't understand this wilful ignorance if yours neg, in regards to the videos this thread is about and what we're trying to do.

You should probably listen to some genuine researched documentaries in the background or something other than weird YouTube vids as they're clearly not doing you any good.

IIRC didn't the creator of the updated version of Spelunky contact Anita & say that she'd made him think about his unintentional use of tropes with the Damsel you could save & use as an object, & Anita politely told him that that was all that she wanted, for him to think about it.

I could be misremembering that though, & one thing did occur to me. Has Anita had any feedback like that (as in polite, considered, reasonable) from developers who tell her that they hear what she's saying, but such tropes do actually fit the kind of game they want to make?

I suppose that would be the acid test really. Anita is quite down about the prevelence of certain tropes in video games & she appears to saying that this is because they're used lazily &/or without thinking, but what about when it's done on purpose? What if your fantasy RPG or whatever only works because your Princess has 'Kidnap Me' sign floating above her head, & them being in any way competent would ruin the story? Would having them subverting the trope make the game better necessarily, or would it just not work? Is it enough that they simply be made aware & might consider doing things differently, perhaps someday making that 'Competent Princess' game that Anita suggested & the hope is that it gains an audience & gamers want more?

I do remember Derek Yu (Spelunky creator) tweeting about the tropes videos, and stating that although he felt there was something to be said for being able to rescue hunks or puppies as well, it was a fair criticism. Then he had to deal with people who thought he was caving to censorship, rather than giving a reasonable response to a reasonable point.

And as we're aware, to this day you can still rescue damsels in Spelunky.

Bashing the video itself is a bit unjustified. I could have linked some of her reviews but that might not have made the obvious detail of 'hey this person is trans' plus was the latest video. Pointing out that most vids we watch are by strangers is a bit baffling. If you want examples of non-Q&A stuff from that channel:

Congratulations, NEG. I've finally watched a video you've linked beyond 60 seconds in! More seriously, he seems to be pretty sensible about depression quest and the harassment that Zoe Quinn has experienced, so it seems even more baffling that you'd be on board with all the GG shit if you'd watched that.

Because I'm not? Not since I understood what the topic itself is about around uh, 2 weeks ago? (thanks to folks like you that bothered discussing/explaining, sometimes) I was basing my opinions on anything and everything but the source material, we already concluded on that mistake.

Glad I made another fan of that channel. SEGA!

That was a really good video and pretty much my thoughts on the issue.

It reminds me of the Stewart Lee routine about 'pc gone mad'. 'isn't it terrible, being nice to each other!'

Mind you, I'd say we're all scholars on some game or another. You could label certain comprehensive reivews to the level of scholarly. Humour is each to their own, of course. You'd never know somethings funny until you discover it, and not all popular videos are a sign that it will be (pewdeepie). I'd assume recommendation plays a part in what you give time to.

Not sure if I'd state Anita to the level of teacher, but I suppose if a teachers goal is to make people think about something, she certainly passes that. Opinion videos are able to do the same thing, I wouldn't label everyone teachers.

Edit: I realise theres a difference when a video states facts and spent time on a presentation board alongside what they want you to think about, mind. Versus just talking. But both can be certainly thought provoking.

You realise the videos called 'Daft Souls' aren't about Demon Souls, right? There hasn't been a video about the Souls games for a fair while now. The last Bloodborne one was four months ago.
