The Wonderful 101 - from Platinum - directed by Hideki Kamiya

I think I'll need to get Infinite Space on the DS so I can decide if Platinum have made a game I don't like yet.

It was developed by the creator of Tekki/Steel Battalion and Clock Tower and his own dev team at Nude Maker, PG's involvement seemed to primarily involve Inaba taking a look at it every so often, so you shouldn't really view it as a PG/Clover game.

Look at the attacks on that vid... Notice the slight 2/3 frame pause that the successful hits make... It's so bloody satisfying when you're playing, as well as adding weight to attacks it's like those slight pauses are there for your brain to capture the awsums easier and enjoy it that micro-bit more.

Why is it that only PlatinumGames' stuff does that? It's instant win!

I think if I had to imagine what games would look like in the future when I was still a child in the eighties then the best I could have imagined would have probably been Geometry Wars 2. Possibly the XBLA version of Death Tank, at a push.

I think what I imagined future games would be like is Flashback times a zillion. Full on living bustling cities... All in side on 2D.

Wind Waker did that. Loads of people hated it.

Yeah, shortly after I posted I recalled my recent Majora's Mask revisit. It happens in most Zelda games...

My point still stands, if you want your action game to stand a chance at being considered excellent then INCLUDE THIS SHIT!!

Hmmm, why in the name of God did Kamiya do this, the Nintendo producer insisted upon it or something?!? I can't recall any of his other games having this highly annoying feature, no idea why Nintendo insist on using it either.

If Kamiya wants to ruin his perfect dev run, he can feel free to make this a mandatory feature, I obviously wasn't paying enough attention to have noticed this game suffered from this 'excellent' little touch. Oh well, the only real reason to even think about getting a Wii U currently probably ruined :(

what the hell is wrong with you?

I don't like the stupid hit pause animation from 3D Zelda maybe? and this game supposedly has it too, so I might be a whole let less enthused as a result? maybe? I never noticed it in the videos until I just read those comments about it from March.

It happens in Bayonetta and the Samurai Shodown series, as well as other 2D fighters. It was happening in that genre in particular way before Nintendo picked it up for Ocarina of Time.

It adds weight and impact to the hit connections.

I personally find it to be the best thing since titty-fucks.

It does indeed.

The touchscreen gameplay appeals to me too. If Game and Wario is any indication, I have excellent circle and line drawing abilities.

I've not been interested in any of Platinum's games before, but this is irresistible.

Well I never noticed it in Bayo, it must just be how they choose to implement it in 3D Zelda then as it was very noticeable, and I didn't like it whatsoever in that implementation, it seemed overly long a pause. If it's more like what 2D fighters and Bayo do, fine, I don't have a problem with it then.

How do we think this is going to do?

When I see footage I'm like "anyone who sees this is going to want to play/buy a console to play this, so vibrantly videogamey".

But I'm increasingly aware that what I think looks amazing is massively at odds to what most other people think.

Well, it's a niche game on a console that isn't doing very well. I can't imagine it's going to do big numbers - depends what expectations are, I guess. I imagine Platinum is smart enough to know it's going to attract a cult audience at best. I think it'll do okay in Japan without coming particularly close to Pikmin 3 numbers. West? Dunno. The upcoming Direct might help, but that's preaching to the converted anyway. I can't see many watching that and suddenly deciding they want it when they didn't beforehand.

Yeah true. Despite seeing a fair amount of footage, I still don't really know how the game is going to play out. I've seen various bits and bobs about the abilities (Sword/Fist/Gun etc) but in terms of what the core mechanics are, I have no clue. I guess that's what the upcoming Nintendo Direct is for.

I just hope it plays as fun as it looks.
