Disappointed that it's not getting released on the Bone, but I'll buy it on the Switch to support Platinum in the hopes of seeing Vanquish 2 (I'm very optimistic and have a lot of other games to play in the meantime so I can wait)

OOOOOH MYYYY GOOOOOD I just started playing this today and it's been so long since I've played something so amazing

I have no idea how combos work and am reticent to watch a video, but I love just being utterly bewildered and overwhelmed by the onscreen action :D

Hello, I backed the kickstarter for this (first one I have backed) and got a note through the door this morning to say there is a £15 customs charge I need to pay before it can be delivered. I am a bit surprised because I thought that goods worth less than £135 are not subject to customs duty. Is this the case for everyone else and have I misunderstood the rules? I don't think I have bought a game from outside the EU since the days of the Nintendo DS and don't remember ever having to pay a customs charge before, so I don't have much experience of this.

EDIT: ah ok, I've logged on to the Royal Mail site and the charge isn't for customs duty, it's for import VAT, plus a massive 'handling fee' which is larger than the VAT charge. Presumably the shops I bought from in the past (Play Asia etc.) included the VAT cost in the price I paid and took care of it for me.

Kicking myself that I didn't ask for a digital copy when backing now, but you live and learn. That's on the assumption that digital goods supplied from outside the EU aren't also subject to import VAT same as physical goods... would be good to know if that's the case?

I got hit with this too. Looks like games were shipped from the US even when you ordered the PAL version. People are kicking off on the Kickstarter update page as it looks like everyone in the UK is getting hit.

I won’t be paying the fee, they can send it back. I’ll also be complaining in a month’s time that I don’t have my game.

Thanks, good to know this wasn't just me being dense.

Various news sites have now picked up the story (including Eurogamer) so I think I'll hold fire on paying the charge and wait and see how this pans out. I'm not holding my breath though.

I can see from the FAQ section on the Kickstarter page that they did add a warning that physical copies would be shipped from the US and that backers would be responsible for local customs/VAT charges on 12th Feb. This was before the campaign closed but after most backers, including me, had already made their pledge. It is pretty poor for Platinum not to have sent an email drawing this to the attention of backers who they knew had ordered physical copies from outside the US before this information had been made available.

Can someone explain why this game teaches you to deflect lasers with the sword, only for that not to work on a bunch of subsequent enemies? That seems like such obvious bullshit that I'm amazed no one at Nintendo had a word.

There's a lot I don't understand about this game, so maybe it's just me.

Wait, I didn't even know they remastered this? I got it very late in the Wii U lifecycle and enjoyed what I played but quickly got distracted...definitely wouldn't mind another go!

It’s also on PC and PS4. I think the performance on switch is a bit wobbly, so might be worth giving one of the others a go. There’s a lot going on - I found on Wii U it was tough to keep track of the action, and the combo system is really quite complicated so I’d be quite keen to play it at a solid 60fps.

That's amazing. Why did they make this such a low key release?

They don't want to remind everyone how they f**ked them over on Kickstarter.

What happened on Kickstarter?

They didn’t have a European distributor (even though the game was widely available in Europe) so everyone in Europe got hit with import duties. They then sneakily updated their terms to say games shipped from the US and could incur penalties.

Not to mention some people still waiting for their backer extras 3 years down the line.

This DLC was made possible by reaching the stretch goal of our February 2020 crowdfunding campaign. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the 33,199 amazing fans who supported us on this journey.

🤨

Seems like it...

Yeah, I used to adore Platinum, but recently all they seems to be doing is asking loads of money and giving little in return - see: Sol Cresta and Babylon's Fall.

Nevertheless, the second part of the WF101 After School Hero DLC is now available:

Platinum do feel like they’ve become part of the industry establishment. Basically what Capcom was when the people who went on to make Grasshopper and Platinum left. Very few surprises from them these days and it feels like an awful lot of their recent games haven’t really been anywhere near the classics they put out in their early days.

Ironically, Capcom’s output is arguably at its strongest right now - SF6, Resi, Monster Hunter…

I hope that Platinum find another hit in them as they’ve been having a rough time - between GaaS stuff, Kickstarter, the Bayo controversies etc.

I think Scalebound has caused them more significant difficulty than all those three things put together. I don’t think any of them move the needle on what Platinum can do except the Kickstarter, which has probably poisoned the well slightly when it comes to getting money from fans.

GaaS is more likely a symptom of, rather than a cause of their current issues, and again, no one cares so long as they’re still putting out bangers along side the GaaS crap, but they’re not.

There were implications that the Scalebound was mismanaged and that they were not straight with Xbox about how things were going. I suspect this is a lot of the reason why no one is doing what seems like a slam dunk - giving them a load of money to make a Bayo-equivalent on PS5/Xbox. Instead we got Bayo 3 on hardware that couldn’t handle it.

I personally think their popularity went to their heads with many publishers clamouring to pay them to make games.

They had eyes on the money, spread themselves too thin and ultimately the quality of what they produced and were able to produce took the hit.

The 101 Kickstarter was a shocker! The advertised it as a ‘Kickstarter’ but the port had already been done IMO. Their release dates were suspiciously soon from the launch of the Kickstarter - launch was Feb 2020 with the game shipping in April 2020! It was a cash grab to get a chunk of money for doing very little by hyping fans. I bought in because I was a fan and I wanted to support them. They then shit on a lot of those fans with the whole Euro distribution debacle and made no attempt to fix it.

They’ve hurt themselves pretty badly with their attitude to things and their reputation is largely in the gutter (IMO).

They’re not the same as the small group that broke away to create Bayonetta, I imagine they have a significant workforce to maintain now and so have to take on anything and everything they can at the publisher’s whim to keep things afloat. Ironically they’ve probably become what they tried to get away from when they made the studio in the first place.

I’m way off them these days and I’m honestly not sure how they’d get me back as a fan TBH.
