The Iwata Asks on this is amazing. Includes news of two secret characters (albeit no details on how to get them).

That whole thing is such a brilliant insight. I especially loved this bit in part 1:

Kamiya

(laughs) Inaba-san yelled at us to get it together for Viewtiful Joe, too. Everyone got together on the weekend to think it over, and the system of VFX Powers31 was born as a result.

Iwata

Huh? That's how those came about?! But the VFX Powers are the core of the game!!

Kamiya

Yeah, but they didn't exist until then. My games tend to go that way, so the core isn't in the plan from the start. We make the game with luck and inspiration, and if we work hard, at some point the God of Video Games descends upon us.

Iwata

Hmm... But the God of Video Games only shows up on weekends at the last minute.

I'm still not getting to grips with this game. I've practiced the moves and stuff in the demo, but as soon as the screen gets hectic I've no idea whats going on.

I've finished the demo story and missions on normal by button mashing and spamming without too much problem, when I've tried to play 'properly' I keep getting killed. Its like they've created a button masher but given it colourful look, the odd combo and loads of action on screen to disguise the fact its simply a button masher.

Not giving up yet though, maybe it will click in time.

From what i've (re)played so far, it's best if you keep fist as your main Unite, because the motions for both the Sword and Pistol (as back up) are much more consistent to pull off, but more importantly those have sweeping or circular attacks which are great for keeping close-by enemies at bay.

*smug mode*

Just cancelled my Amazon order as it was still not dispatched. picked it up from Game this morning - it was £39.99, but as i told the guy of my Amazon woes he gave me 10% off, and I had some credit, so in the end it was £31, several pounds cheaper than Amazon, and I have a long weekend to play it.

Well, it's here, and it's hard!

I'm playing on Very Easy but finding it Very Difficult.

I managed silver on the intro level, got quite a long way (I think) into the first proper level then got wiped out when we got to an area where things keep falling to earth and scattering the team. Am I missing an easy/quick way of reviving them/calling them back? Because I was continually running around to wake them up and so got hit by the falling stuff until I ran out of health. :(

But I must have learnt something because I replayed level 0 and got platinum. There is hope!

i spent last night on the missions practicing some of the stuff in that video. I'm getting better but still a long way to go. I can pull off a few combos now though. I'd also back what Saur and Rudderless have said re using the right stick to draw the symbols. So much easier. I wonder if the reviewers having problems tried to draw on the screen or use the stick. Either way its not as bad as some have made out.

Saur is a legend, I remember seeing trailers for god hand, thinking it looked awful, read the ign review (3/10 iirc) so I had completely written it off, then saw a 5 minute video of Saur just kicking fuck out of people with such skill and finesse and that did more than any advert, review or friend recommendation ever could.

I was playing the demo yesterday for the 2nd time - think I'm understanding the game a little more with each go, feels quite overwhelming to begin with. My son asked what I was doing and came to draw me the swords and the circles and the guns (arguably better than me - take that crappy video game reviewer!) Left him playing the demo, pressing odd buttons, he seemed quite taken with it. Good going for a 3 and a half year old.

Just watched that Saur video - blimey, didn't even know there was a whip or hammer - and his combos are insane. Once there's more than one robot on screen my game falls to bits, or those bloody tanks - by the time I've regrouped everyone I've either been smashed or shot again - jelly mold shield doesn't seem to save me and the snake dodge has the team at the back hit and spread about.

Much like Viewtiful Joe, there's something about this that I want to absolutely love, but I'm pretty sure I'd end up hitting a brick wall with it. Very tempted to pick up the whole game though.

The tanks with the protective shield at the front fuck me up entirely. I can't even seem to figure out a vaguely useful tactic against them.

Wonder pudding to the rescue! Buy it in the wondermart in the full game. It's already in there for you in the demo. Also the wondermart music is amazing.

This is definitely Kamiya 'Normal' difficulty. lol!

Can someone who's completed it give me a bit of advice, cause i'm stuck and obviously missing something:

I am on the two-headed dragon boss, the section where you're fighting the two heads whilst stood on its back. Anyway, the first head is down, and the dude shouted "Unite Build", but i dunno what to do. There's a strange green light that keeps zapping the dead head's eyeball. Am i just being thick? To be honest the move-set itself is a lot to remember, never mind everything else.

i'm stuck at exactly that bit too, did you get past it? or anyone else who's done level 3 got any tips?

the green light where the helper guy is projecting a circle on the side of it, i can throw all my men onto the circle - but then what? (i assume you have to do something with this as the other head is at zero health but won't die.)

edit - guess what, as soon as i posted that i did that bit (little bit stuck on the next bit now) but anyway:

putting all the guys in the green circle for about the 10th time, and same as before 1 guy was left behind, i assumed this was because there was too many or something, but no it just doesn't throw them all in there for some reason, so i went back to it and threw the last guy in and it worked. pretty annoying.

Oh - with discount and a fiver voucher, I'll be getting this for 23 quid download. Sweet.

Now - I just need to buy a bloody USB disc with a power cable (I'm already using a USB slot for the ethernet adapter and another for charging my wii motes)

I've just spent a couple of hours on this, I've reached the end of the second level (after the battle in the stadium). It's so confusing but fun at the same time. I was frustrated getting into the stadium, I took ages trying to get the door open and I'm still not sure exactly how I did it. The camera on the 'inside' section kept pointing all over the place so I was having trouble seeing where I was or what was around me.

But other than that little niggle I've had a great time with it so far.
