E3 - Microsoft Conference Thread (June 4th)

Resi 6 did look stonking though, in a kind of GoW way..

And this is my problem. Splinter Cell also looked like Gears Of War. CoD looked like Gears of War. Dead Space 3 looks like gears of fucking war. Even Tomb Raider had a disturbing amount of brown cover shooting in the bit we saw.

I saw brown, I saw hiding behind things.

It's entirely possible I'd just glazed over by that point of course.

I thought it looked great. The stealth and executions looked really slick (if unnecessarily violent) and the character weight, movement and control looked spot on too.

I liked the fact it was day time. One of the things that bugged me about the original games was that I spent the entire time in night vision mode. So never mind brown, everything was green. I do hope they mix it up with some proper stealthy nighttime infiltration missions too though.

I just heard 'Splinter Cell' and zoned out... The main issue with MS' conference was that, for gaming, it was stale. I wouldn't get particularly foamy about the next gen either. Because their approach to games won't change with a new platform... Games are, and always have been, a means to an end for MS - their core market is the US, it's where their main focus is.. they've done well there and now want to move broader into services and general entertainment.

The only thing the SmartGlass may help with is games like Skyrim where you could bring up menus or favourites quicker. Instead of going into the menu you could just tap an option on the screen and your weapons change, or you take a potion etc.

Fuck if I can be bothered to mess on with it for movies and browsing, I already have my tablet for browsing.

If I did decide to use it, they better release it as an app. I already paid a fortune for an iPad, they can fuck off if they thing I'm gonna buy another tablet for that.

but the problem with that is that you need to put down your controller to do so... this is why I think SmartGlass misses the point.

I think he means 'surprise' as in something we didn't already know about, or haven't played 20 times already this gen, or don't give a toss about (I'm speaking of the Kinect stuff here),

Y'know, like the Watch Dogs demo in the Ubisoft conference.

That's why I specifically asked if people were so down on the event because there were no surprises. His reply doesn't make any sense!

Anyway, sounds like I should take a look at Ubi's show.

I think the problem is that (like many products and services) SmartGlass doesn't solve a problem or meet a need. I don't want or need a Game of Thrones map and I don't want or need to control my TV viewing with a smart phone or to use it as an input device to browse the web on my TV.

From what they showed it doesn't offer me anything I need, so why bother? It just seems like the next step in the attempt to make the Xbox more of a media hub with spurious features and nothing to do with games.

Not really, depends what your doing. Like I said if it for quick items or something, a quick tap of the screen could work well. To do all the Halo stuff it showed was pointless. You could just do that on the screen with your controller.

Halo 4 looked awesome too. The problem with these conferences is the way they take a long time saying very little when all gamers want is wall to wall games. I'd have quite happily say through more Halo, and given its standing I expected more too. Black Ops 2 gained more coverage.

I got the sense from Sony's and Microsoft's conference that more than ever these days it's all about rubbing up your partners the right way.

I guess I'm the only who thought Resi 6 looked really shonky? Sparse environments with a bunch of badly animated zombies failing to glitch their way up some stairs followed by shooting mens running away from an explosion that seemed to be happening in Playmobil land, judging by the boxy cars. Maybe I'm being too critical of the game because I would want it to be more survival horror, but it really did look like one of the least graphically impressive game at the show so far.

Nah. I agree. Really liked the look of Halo 4 though, gorgeous game.

Yeah, NIKE! I was thinking more of games though - Ubi muscling in there, even gaining a pack-in (two actually) from Sony. For what? A measly bit of DLC.

I think they're not sure who these are aimed at anymore. It's aimed at partners, the press are the people there so you'd expect it to be dry and as the hardcore we should accept that.

But then they advertise and stream it front and centre on the dashboard, so I think we can be forgiven for expecting it to be "us" focused.

They mentioned during the show that it's coming for the iPad/Pod/Phone good to see that they don't pretend that other companies products don't exist.

I can't wait to give it a go on my Apple stuff.

MCV still maintaining that there were going to be new hardware announcements from MS and Sony this year:

MCV has been getting a bit of stick overnight as it became clear that Sony and Microsoft are not presenting new hardware this year. Something we famously predicted WOULD happen.

If only you understood my longing to tell you who are source was on that. It really would' date=' for want of a more professional and dignified term, “shut you up”. But we can’t reveal it and that’s life.

What I will tell you, with 100 per cent sincerity, is that six months ago both platform holders DID plan to reveal their new consoles this year. Then when it became apparent that one had changed its mind, making the commercial decision that its strong-selling hardware could continue delivering for another 12 months, the other followed suit, welcoming the extra R&D time.

The situation that left us in, however, was that both were left with the task of trying to rustle up a compelling E3 sales pitch for their existing hardware while keeping all the truly innovative and new stuff behind closed doors.[/quote']

That makes a lot of sense, and goes some way to explain the horrors of the MS and Sony conferences.

MS are finally seeing the Xbox brand get some nice revenue, and Sony were running scared that MS would get the jump on them again next gen. So both would be happy to push back their hardware launches until next year.

The longer Microsoft/Sony take to release next-gen consoles, the more steam (no pun intended) PC games/PC game development will pick up for those that want to do something with newer tech. As proven by Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313.

Would those have been PC only demo's 5 years ago? Not a chance.

What do you mean? Watch Dogs is also PS3 & 360. Or are you on about the actual demo they showed running on PC.
