E3 - Sony Conference Thread (June 4/5th)

And Jesus, Gametrailers need to fire whoever looks after their sound. They just had the sound of Sony's rubbish "wrap up" running over Gametrailer's own programme and a trailer for the Elder Scrolls online. Amateurish.

To be fair, it was during God of Snore, which actually improved the demo.

Other than they had nothing more to show than MS.

I'm rather concerned for the industry at the moment. E3 platform conferences should be full of big third party titles. Neither Microsoft or Sony have delivered anything we didn't know about to get us talking (Beyond and the book thing doesn't count) and none of the big third parties dropped by with megatons or debut's of flagship titles. I wouldn't buy any of the current machines based on what we've seen today.

That or they've all saved it for WiiU

Elmo mistaking Last of Us for Uncharted and getting really angry on IRC has made it worth staying up this late.

The moment the title came up i was laughing HARD. What the fuck? It looked exactly like an Uncharted game and everyone is saying it was a good showing?

Probably all stockpiling for next year's E3.

Ahh, Sony: grasping defeat from the jaws of victory once again.

The Last of Us looks amazing, the ACIII boat section was a cool reveal and I'm interested in Beyond, but this entire show should have been about Vita. And 30 minutes shorter.

I'm not sure if it was better or worse than Microsoft's showing on balance, but it was definitely more disappointing.

If you own a Vita cry yourself to sleep tonight.

The thing is, we absolutely know they've got more Vita games coming, but for whatever reason they didn't bother showing them. Absolutely no idea what's going on at Sony HQ, but that was a dog shit showing, which sends all the wrong messages.

It's the same team so they're bound to look alike, but gameplay wise what we were shown was much more about limiting rations, stealth and survival than Uncharted. But to be fair it did look fairly linear.

Sony were shit, but the worst thing is the format of their presentation, which is utterly dull, dated and corporate. It feels like they're stuck in 2001.

Microsoft are predictable, bland and boring, but their format is at least slick. And they had Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

EA's games were really boring bland generic shite, but their presentation was fine. They made their vapid crap look more interesting than it actually is.

Ubi was awesome. Yeah, their format was a bit cringe in places, but it was never boring, they knew what would appeal to their audience, they showed a crapload of varied stuff, and they glossed over the casual crap in a montage. Tighten up the script and it would have been perfect.

I love watching E3 with RLLMUK. You guys are the best.

And the combat looked similar in terms of simple combo melee attacks and cover popping.

Graphically it looks good but so did Uncharted 2 and 3. There were a lot of very similar looking assets too. The stairs for example.

Any chance of removing the 'Vita' tag from this thread?

Who knows what their strategy is. They've shown a fondness for giving big announcements at Gamescon, such as price cuts and first party unveilings, but all eyes were on them tonight. They know the trouble Vita is in, yet they decided to sit on their hands. The inference many are going to take away from that, is that Sony either don't give a shit about Vita, or that it doesn't have enough games to even make a good fist of showing support for it.

They'll catch a lot of shit for this in the gaming press and on forums (I can't even imagine the kicking GAF are giving the machine now, as many were keen to pronounce it dead a month after release FFS) but regardless of how Sony stack up against MS and Nintendo, they've lost E3 this year.

I do think the JK Rowling partnership is a big deal, and I can understand them wanting to spend some time on that, but they needed another solid 30 mins of quality game announcements. I was literally speechless when he started to wrap it up.

Anyway, sod it, I'm knackered and rambling, but if you'd have told me this morning that Ubisoft would have put on a better presentation than Sony, I would have laughed in your face. I mean the Sony conference was practically a support platform for Ubisoft anyway, who the hell thought it was a good idea to showcase the technical shambles that was the Far Cry 3 co-op is beyond me, and talk about sloppy seconds. Sure it was a new feature, but many of us had just seen the games demoed by Ubisoft, so to see them take up so much time on the Sony conference was mind boggling.

Aaaanyway, that's me done for the night. The comments were fun at least. :)

It's a corporate event though and it isn't for the general public - it's not The Gadget Show Live. We get game trailers and teasers throughout the year for the general consumer. I don't think any of the big three regard the event as "entertainment".

I've watched some snippets of the Sony conference and watched the MS conference yesterday. Both the 360 and the PS3 seem to have reached the end of their lifecycles. Hopefully, with the new hardware, Nintendo will have a more interesting key-note.

Glad I didn't stay up, but I expected a lot more from Sony beforehand. I especially expected a lot more Vita support, FFS Sony.

So, only Ubi had a decent showing so far and probably Nintendo will too - I mean they have too, right? New hardware and everything, how could they make that NOT exciting? MS and Sony really dropping the ball

We can all blame Vemsie for getting our hopes up

Well, l did say that l was sure Sony could manage to fuck it up a lot of pages back ;). Honestly don't get them. Why the hell did they show what seemed like an hour of that book thingy? As much as I love TLoU, they did bad.

Especially coming after the Ubi presser, who showed everybody how it's done.

This. I got my Vita because the titles in development looked good; I've already been impressed by Wipeout and Velocity, I've recently enjoyed the Gravity Rush demo, and I know that we have Sound Shapes, LBP, Persona 4, PSO, Soul Sacrifice, Sine Mora, Jet Set Radio, Bioshock and a bunch of other stuff on the way for the handheld, but you wouldn't know it after watching that conference. I mean, under normal circumstances the first E3 after your new console launch would be an opportunity to blow people away with your software lineup, but anyone unaware of the games on the way won't be any more informed after watching that. :(

Well, I got one out of six...

Sony announce The sequel to The Last Guardian. No details of the release date for The Last Guardian are given.

Gran Turismo 6 is announced for Playstation 5. Playstation 4 will only see the release of the 3 minute opening FMV for the sequel. It will take up an entire Blu Ray disc and retail for $80.

Sony release their competitor to the Kinect named "Dynamic". It has the same form factor as Kinect but has a coloured ball stuck on the top. No games are released that use the device.

No Vita games are released or announced post launch. When asked for comment, Sony deny that the Vita even exists.

Naughty Dog release Uncharted 4 out of nowhere. It turns out the game is just "The Last of Us" with a Nathan Drake skin for the player controlled character. It wins 34 game of the year awards whilst "The Last of Us" is critically panned.

Sony re brand the Playstation 3 as the Playstation 4. No additional functionality is added but the size of the console is doubled along with the price.

Reflecting upon it some more, I still don't get why Sony didn't show more of it's line-up, instead of spending ages on Wonderbook and Ubi's games (as good as that naval stuff from AC3 looked). They should have shown more from The Last of Us as well, preferably a second playthrough in which they skip the fighting (yes, that's perfectly possible). I know shooting and fighting works better for a demo, but now people still think it's Uncharted 4 whereas it's actually pretty different. It's not a shooter for starters. Sure, the demo had no big set-pieces, no wise-cracking and it showed off some of the inventory management, AI triggers and lack of health regen that you won't find in Uncharted, but I rather have a much more elaborate demo for that than ages of Wonderbook.

God of War looks good to me. I know it's just another God of War but there aren't many God of War like games in the first place, so I'm good with that.

Still, a poor conference.
