I was wandering around after doing a gig last night. Going down some side streets and alleys that were literally pointless in terms of story or mechanics in general, and only really served just to be there. I wandered through these for ages until I popped out by the river and recognized where I was! Went back in and made my way up to the main road level and was presented with this:

(Series X in RT mode)

This game is just utterly astonishing. My word, I hope they do something modern based on UE5 in future, and not just Witcher games.

It’s the little details in the city that really draws me in.

During my last session a pretty monstrous storm ravaged Night City, and I felt compelled to run along a soaked road to get under the thin cover of an overpass. The exposed road either side was slick with fresh rain, with my temporary shelter offering a dry haven. The patter of rainfall sounded awesome. Just standing there, waiting for it to pass, the neon of the city in the distance. Wish I’d recorded it but it was one of so many moments of subtle immersion, a moment in time that felt unique to my V as she stood there content to wait the storm out.

If you take the time to look around the city's intricacies are astounding really. Up there with GTA. Something like Spiderman seems to pale in comparison and yet people were instantly blown away. Even when this arrived with its bugs you could see the work that had gone into it was mental.

I know theres some repeated stuff (even real cities look mostly banal) but with things like the multi level sidewalks and stuff like the glass/colour effects its truly stunning.

I mean its no surprise it had bugs. The work involved must have been so immense.

The level of detail in Night City is above and beyond anything Rockstar has achieved so far.

I think RDR2 has infinitely more life in its world, to be honest. The level of detail that actually changes throughout is staggering. I think as a city CP is amazing, but those fucking npcs do fuck all.

Some slight side gig spoilers but wtf lol, the third one in particular I never imagined would be possible. You certainly couldn't be that dynamic in a R* game! I guess if you were arthur morgan you could fumble over slowly and turn to your target at a rate of about 2 cm a sec

Oh, the level of freedom you get with Cyberpunk is miles better than RDR2, which is effectively R* getting you to do exactly what they tell you to do otherwise you fail!

In other news, I’m still waiting for this damn raytracing patch to come to PC…I’m stalling a replay because of this and I’m beginning to think it’s never gonna happen and I was sold my 4090 under false pretences :P

I know they're not really a fair comparison as they set out to diff things. I'm just amazed that between Cyberpunk and Witcher 3, how CDPR pulled off both given their lack of previous AAA game experience. I mean Witcher 2 was good and all but nowhere near the same in scope and ambition.

Eh? The PC version has had ray tracing since launch.

Having said that though, given there is so much detail, it's unfortunate what you can't interact with. I appreciate it balloons scope, and it took crunch enough to make this game, but I feel like I should be able to mess with people, cars, traffic lights, etc. I suppose that would mean there probably ought to be missions that revolve around traffic patterns or whatever, and maybe there aren't, but there's a bit of "uncanny valley" going on. As daft as that sounds for how things work vs how they look. Does that make sense?

Did you know there's a button by a bridge downtown that turns all the lights in the street off? Take that, Valentine house-builders

Nice. But I didn’t think it was possible to complete a gig without killing every enemy within a mile radius of the target?

I did one yesterday where I really wasn't paying attention to the ask and, honestly, wanted some heads to roll. So I charge in and do the deed and the fixer had a moan that the job wasn't done on the quiet. Not sure if I got less XP.

If I happen upon you and you have a bounty, you're going to die, unfortunately. I don't make the street rules.

I prefer to render assassination targets unconscious and put them in the trunk of my fixer's car to be (presumably) tortured horribly at a later date. Some of them really deserve it

I've seen a bunch of these type of videos. They are very impressive.

I have to loot everything though. EVERYTHING! I will root through stuff and rob main storyline characters in their homes of pointless shit right infront of them.

So those YouTube vids kind of drive me mad with their looting nothing, drive away like a badass to look super cool behaviour. Loot everything folks. You know you want too.

I long for the day a mod comes along that allows me to do all the above and then take a huge shit on their bed.

Full immersion.

I've noticed more repeated stuff (e.g. cut and pasted houses in the suburbs) as I've methodically explored. But they've been very clever in maximising variety where you're likely to explore vs. where most players will drive through on the way somewhere else.

You can tell they've really thought about how seemingly needless variety helps with immersion. There are no two bathrooms that look the same anywhere - they not only have different layouts but different decor and amenities. (Like, doors/stalls will work differently.) All the weapon shops, clothes shops, pharmacies and ripper docs use a similar pallette of assets but nearly all of them have some unique element.

OK, there are a zillion identical newsstands, food shops and vending machines, but it is at least consistent with it's rules that they're background colour and you don't need to investigate them closely after you've seen one.

Most excellent.

I was supposed to wait for the DLC to come out, but this is making me want to create a new character.

Yeah, makes a lot of sense.

I think my perfect 'big city' open world game lies somewhere between Cyberpunk 2077 and Yakuza 0. A man can dream.

Any tips on getting used to 30fps RT mode on consoles?

It looks incredible but it's really really hard to adjust to I'm finding.

I've only given it a go quickly for a few minutes before I had to leave again but for those playing that way - do you get used to it?

I think it has a strong full screen motion blur, which will appear way stronger with a lower frame-rate.

You could try turning that off?

I also find 30 fps a bit harder to deal with on an OLED with it's super quick pixel response. It makes it look a lot more choppy than a normal LED tv.

Huh, I've not noticed that issue and I'm OLED in RT mode. No "getting used to it", per se. Kinda weird how motion affects us all differently, I cannot for the life of me watch my kids play Minecraft but have no issues when it's me with the controller.
