I'm not very far in but this game is  staggering. I can't get over how much this feels like a living and breathing city. Granted it's missing the usual people/cars density, but I'll take it. I find myself driving carefully, and trying to make sense of street signage.

The whole upgrade system is baffling, things like spending the blue points. I realized in tiny text I needed 4 points to be able to buy the next level of a thing. With so many options my usual paranoia of wondering if my build is optimal is rising but I'm hoping it all makes sense at some point.

I'm about 20 hours in and I still feel like that sometimes. The thing is, it doesn't really matter, just spend them how you think makes sense. I just kinda role play it, thinking about what suits my V. My V long ago abandoned her initial dreams of being a stealthy cyber ninja and just accepted she's more a guns blazing, katana wielding psycho so I just spend points that work with that play style. On normal difficulty you will be OP pretty soon no matter what you do.

I haven't even gotten around to properly looking into the implant stuff...

By “legendary netrunner” do you mean rache Bartmoss, friend of alt Cunningham and man single-handedly responsible for permanently crashing the original internet and causing The Collapse lol

Yup!

generally speaking, more specialized builds are helpful in harder combat situations but so long as you tackle city districts that are close to your level you can get by as a jack-of all trades especially on more forgiving difficulty settings. This also gives you the advantage of enjoying a more rounded experience. Just spec into what you enjoy doing.

Cheers, I'll go with my gut and stop fretting about it. I'm on normal anyway, play time is too sporadic. I blame WoW, turned me into a min/maxer.

29 hours in and only just met Panam. Doing side jobs around Night City really helped ground me in the world: it’s fantastic.

Opted to put attributes into intelligence > quick hacking. Chucked a few points at Body for the health and stamina boost, and enough elsewhere to access the smart weapons. Playing on a lower difficulty but so immersed in the world that I’m happy to just be in it, exploring and marvelling at the scale. Also loving how the game uses the Dualsense, more little details that help with immersion.

if you do a replay on very hard you’ll need to min/max, but my first playthrough was very generalist and I played on normal, iirc. Got to see a lot of content that way.

So I picked this up about a week ago, as it was on sale for about half price in the PS Store for September, and I needed something new.

It's pretty good! Very happy, as I always am with CDPR (and Bethesda, if I liked them) big open world RPGs that you wait until after they've done all the patches to make it ready before buying it.

I've been doing all the Side Jobs (but not much of the gigs work as yet - need to knuckle down and earn some eddies I think) on Hard as a hacking type. I get completely pulverised if it gets to a firefight, but it doesn't often need to - just those pesky Cyberpsychos get a bit tricky so far.

Should I be upgrading my good guns as I go (I am putting points into Tech/Crafting if it helps? Or just swapping out to the newest loot as it comes in?

Most people don't bother with crafting/upgrading; just swap out weapons as you level up.

You will pick up some unique, Legendary weapons on the way, but normal weapons you pick up will generally do more damage as you go on.

@Uncle Mike

Generay speaking, if it’s a generic weapon, then it’s usually not worth upgrading it, as the component price to improve stuff goes up the more you upgrade a particular gun. You may as well hang on until a new one drops. That said, upgrading is fairly cheap, so it’s not a problem if you find a gun you want to hang onto and want to beef it up a bit.

With iconic weapons (the named weapons that have circuit diagram backgrounds), it’s worth upgrading them, as they are unique and will never drop again after you find them (and are gone forever if you accidentally dismantle them). There’s a weird unintended consequence to that, whereby guns you find at the start of the game will be ruinously expensive to upgrade by the mid-game, as they drop at your current level.

To be honest, the crafting and upgrade system is a complete dogs dinner and needs to be reworked, but in the last update, CDPR made upgrade components much cheaper, so it’s ultimately not that much of a problem. And it’s not like there aren’t plenty of guns to experiment with if your current one isn’t doing the business.

The Destiny-style gun power system is a bit daft in my view, and sits awkwardly with the structure and the game world.

Ace, thanks. I think that's about where I'd ended up in any case - once you notice a few of these are labelled Iconic it seems like they're where you want to be (and I'm not shooting all that many gonks anyway.) Just sticking with the Smart weapons (which don't seem to take silencers - I guess I need something for some stealth as well.) TBH I only really need my guns for the odd scripted mission segment where it's a boss fight in a room - most of the time I'm barely even in the mission zone now.

You seem to have misspelled ‘It’s the Game of the Decade!’

Would I go that far? I don't know. I do think it's a much more successful roleplaying game than Witcher 3, where you're obviously stuck there roleplaying as Geralt and it's by definition quite constricting into where you can go. This feels like (although I assume it's mostly illusory) I have more scope to be the V I want to be - in my case a reasonably decent Nomad that you simply need not to double-cross to come out alright. I do most of my jobs pretty non-lethally, unless the antagonists are proper scum.

So that's all quite good. And Night City is exactly the dense disorienting place I presume it's supposed to be. I don't really have any idea where I am at any point. But it is impressively real-feeling. A really solid semblance of a place. And the ability to explore and find stuff is great, too.

Obviously the guns and vehicles all feel terrible, but then having good combat is not CDPR's strength (nor arguably, for RPGs in general.) And the systems and UI underpinning it all are awful. Do they work on a PC? Because on a console at least, it's a real mess.

But I am having loads of fun with it, it's living in my head between sessions. I've barely scratched the main story thread (I have missions to meet the Voodoo Boys and something about a parade in Japantown to do) but I've done loads of sizable side quests - followed Judy's story to conclusion, as well as threads for Panam, River and Claire, which have all been really solid.

I do like it a lot!

There is so much you’ve yet you tuck into by the sounds of it, it’s incredible really how much they packed in.

I don’t agree about the vehicle handling though, it always seems fine to me…but it does get mentions a lot so there must be something in it. Having said that I have the augmentation that means you can run continuously, so I prefer to travel on foot mainly anyway.

The guns feel a LOT better if you fiddle with the controller settings.  There are plenty of places online that give you recommended settings, but this one (IIRC) worked for me:

It's worth experimenting a bit with different settings, as it makes a huge difference if you get one that's right for you.

I need more RAM/more slots for quickhacks at the moment

If you're still using the base cyberdeck you started with then go to a ripperdoc and get a better one - you still have the Voodoo boys to visit in Pacifica, there's a ripperdoc there with a good selection. If you really want to specialise in hacking and stealth, then I would put points mainly into the following attributes:

Intelligence - get this up to 18 pronto, it's the most vital stat for hacking, and then put as many skill points into the available quickhack skills as you can, with some in the Breach Protocol skills.

Technical - Get this up to around 12, more if you can - this is good for gaining entry to buildings stealthily, however I wouldn't bother putting skill points into crafting until later, if at all...

The rest is more personal taste, and I tend to spread points around.  But if you want to be stealthy and get stealth kills, than hand guns with silencers are your friend - you can build up the skills for that in the Reflexes attribute, but you will also want some points in Cool for stealth movement and stealth kills - I personally have never bothered with Cold Blood.

Going back to cyberdecks, I have a favourite, but I'll spoiler this if you want to find stuff out for yourself:

Spoiler

My current fave is the Tetratronic Rippler Mk.4. This is available from the Ripperdoc in Westbrook, right across from the luxury apartments where Jefferson and Elizabeth Peralaz live.

The reason I like this particular deck is that it reduces the RAM cost of ultimate quickhacks (such System Reset, and Suicide) by three, and allows them to spread once*.  So for the cost of one ultimate quickhack, you can actually put two enemies out of commission. This is particularly good for System Reset because that is completely silent, so is good for stealth.

*At launch this was hilariously broken because the skills for quickhacks that spread also worked on ultimate quickhacks when using this deck. So you could have up to 3 or 4 enemies just topping themselves for you. Like I said, broken! They've changed it now so that it only spreads once.

That’s so cool, I didn’t know they did things like that - I either just use one with loads of slots in or the one with none at all that fires off Bezerk if I think I’m going to be doing a lot of chopping

The thing is, as is stated above, you don't need to specialise in this game. You can try out more or less any build to see if you find it fun; you only really need to really go all out with one stat if you want to go for some crazy, completely broken build where your Sandevistan has thirty seconds of uptime and a one-second cooldown. Just using an ability unlocks perks and stat boosts, so you can easily experiment with abilities without having to commit to anything.

Hey @ZOK what are you gonna do when Stadia dies, or are you kinda satisfied to be done with it?

I don’t know at the moment…I may give GeForce a try, or I may switch to the Series X.

Or I may just take a break from these type of games for a bit, that’s also been suggesting itself to me as a possibility.

I think I'm at 18/12 or thereabouts at the moment, as it happens, with Cool at about 8. Most of my perks have been into Quickhacks also. A few in the Crafting trees, to work towards being able to craft the top tier shit later. Not used much in the Cool trees at all, and nothing in Reflex or Body.

I found your spoiler last night! Just saving up 5K in eddies to afford it.

Haven't played this for ages so fired it up again last night and it still drops framerate like a stone in cut scenes on my PC. And that's with a 3060ti. I an get a full 60fps walking around, driving etc but as soon as a cut scene comes on it drops to 20's. So strange.

Their plans seem absurdly ambitious (3 new Witcher games within 6 years, 2 new global studios, a brand new IP and a Cyberpunk sequel) and you can’t help but feel they’re setting themselves up for an almighty fall, especially considering the egregious hit their reputation took with their last release. But with all that said, I’m really glad they’re going to have another crack at Cyberpunk.

2077’s a deeply flawed game but there are moments under the seedy neon glow of Night City when it all coalesces into something truly extraordinary the likes of which has never really been done before, and you can see just what they were trying to pull off. With all the many lessons they’ll have learned from the first game, a more focused development schedule and no need to futilely attempt to shoehorn it onto severely underpowered ancient consoles they could potentially make an absolutely seminal fucking banger of a game. My overriding feeling when playing it for the 120 or so hours I put into it was that it was a real tragedy it stumbled so badly out of the gate in terms of public perception and that it would be a crying shame if it was destined to end up as an infamous footnote, its true potential never realised.

CDPR taking a second bite of the cherry and the prospect of being able to return to Night City at some point in the future is very welcome news indeed. (Unless it’s just some multiplayer spinoff or something, which doesn’t really hold much interest for me personally.)

These settings massively improved the feel

of driving for me, thank you! Feel brave enough to try the races now.

Imagining this game in VR. It would be incredible. Wouldn’t do any missions, just wander about Night City gawking at things. So pretty much like now but in VR.

Im on my third play through after an 18 month break on the latest version and only about 10 hours in, so far I have encountered 3 different secure evidence type side jobs where I cannot interact with the flashing evidence box, even on the "broken" launch version I only ever encountered one of these.
