Also, I seem to remember coming across a massive structure in the desert like a mine or something, with what sounded like work going on and the implication that something is hidden inside it behind some huge doors. I thought it’s nature would be revealed before the end but it doesn’t seem to have been, anyone know where I mean?

It’s got some funky map edges around it so you can only get in and out a certain way…it’s near Panam’s crew’s camp somewhere I think.

Have I asked about this before?

Ah, that could be...

Spoiler

Part of another ending run, where you ask Panam and the Aldocaldos for help.

Couldn’t they! The one that annoys me is the text of speech on things like tellies…it’s too small, so you move closer and it reduces in size!

Actually, that's a bit of an optical illusion. Because the surrounding screen appears to get bigger as you get closer, it makes the text and logos appear to shrink, when in actual fact the text and logos remain exactly the same size.

Is it? How come they get harder to read the closer you get to them? They need to sort it out, whatever it is!

In other news, I just discovered this YouTuber DJ Peach Cobbler and he does some really good videos. This one is about Cyberpunk 2077…it’s hard to disagree with his assessments really (although the game rewards exploration much more than he acknowledges).

Contains many spoilers for this, Red Dead Redemption and RDR2.

I'm replaying on PC (again!) and this 1.6 patch is definitely an improvement on 1.5 in terms of visuals. I felt the 1.5 patch actually downgraded the visuals a bit. Sadly, the game is still unstable on my overclocked 2080ti, I have to dial back the overclock to make it more stable. This is an issue which only happened after 1.5 came in.

You're not kidding. I found a few things last night while stumbling around that I'd never found before. Like, I found a pair of Legendary black hotpants in an alley that evidently are a part of a Legendary Set (rocker, in this case). So I went on the wiki and found that there are many legendary sets for different roles, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in the game or on the internet.

Then while I was on the wiki I read this:

"In 1999, the British Monarchy was overthrown by the Martial Law Authority (MLA), an anti-monarchist military dictatorship that assumed power through the enactment of a perpetual state of emergency. When King Charles III led the Royal Marines in revolt against the MLA at Devonport in the early 2000s, he was killed along with his brother Prince Andrew. D.I.5 (also known as the Security Service) then implemented Operation Cromwell, the systematic elimination of all members of the royal family and heirs to the throne to permanently prevent the restoration of the monarchy."

A man can dream.

Had a solid six hours with this today (worked a half day, still sick, cough splutter), and it’s really quite a staggering game. The scope and ambition is clear, and it’s a world that feels lived in.

For today’s session I deliberately cleared some of the early side missions I’d overlooked as I figured these would be good for exploration and grounding my experience a bit more, and so it proved. I’d do a mission and have a wander to an interesting vendor or a collectible in the process. I bought some hotpants, had a night with a joytoy (okay, I did that twice), helped a neighbour come to terms with the death of a friend and it all felt organic, with no pressure to do anything but enjoy the world on offer. Pleasingly, while I’ve now seen more of the map and the game, I’ve still got so, so much more to uncover.

Someone else mentioned Fallout New Vegas a few pages back, and it’s generating similar vibes for me. It’s a properly fun world to be in. I’m thinking about the game while not playing it, and want to get back on my motorbike to ride to a spot on the map, get off and have a stroll around. And buy some more hotpants.

EDIT: adding it was @Uzi who mentioned this in comparison with Fallout NV; was being lazy not looking that up but wholeheartedly agree. The world is so easy to get sucked into.

Quick question - I played through about 20 hours of this last year and went back to it recently. Would it make sense to start again given all the patches? I see the progression system seems to have been changed quite substantially.

I don't think the skill trees have changed drastically enough to warrant a replay for that purpose. The main reworks appear to have been fixing broken perks (eg throwing knives) and making some tweaks here and there. It does however make sense to start it again because it'll be a nice treat

Edit: last night I also found the corpse of the 6th St gang member who threatens you and Padre in the Streetkid intro, complete with a shard detailing a conversation between him and Padre. Crazy attention to detail.

Some of the most memorable things I found in the hours of just freeroaming Night City in the endgame. Spoilers:

Spoiler

The cannibals/serial killer's hideout shack under one of the Megablocks. Brr!

In the almost completely empty ghost town (with the abandoned bar) from early in the story, I was driving around when I saw a single loot marker in my peripheral vision. Got out to investigate, it was marking the entrance to a little survivalist's bunker.

The military contractor's factory/plant that's not (afaik?) attached to any mission or job but you can break into to fight their mechs, read their side story and loot.

One of the 'base' mission areas in the desert (forget which one) is in a little cul de sac with a lake behind it outside of the compound. First time through, probably assumed it was just out of bounds set dressing. Of course if you can get outside of the compound there's shit to find in the lake. (Pretty much every body of water in the game has something at the bottom)

A stupid mythbusters reference, which I found by following a plume of smoke at the edge of the city.

A mini treasure hunt in Pacifica from a washed up body under a jetty.

The back yard full of netrunners who's refrigeration had failed. (And of course the legendary fridged netrunner you can find near a plot location...)

A creepy Santa Muerte shrine in a back alley.

The record store (I guess this is from a sidequest I didn't do?) - I didn't find the jail or the high school until very late in the game either

On that note, area-specific one-off NPC conversations everywhere.

The enormous gang skirmishes that can sometimes kick off once you're maxed out. Had a particularly hairy one off on the beach in Pacifica at one point where I was getting swiss cheesed by about a dozen gangers, legging it to find cover to heal and reload when some tooled up Afterlife mercs joined in.

My favourite, the point in the game where the penny dropped for me that *everywhere* is worth revisiting/exploring (with the exception of Biotechnica flats and the fully empty stretches of the desert), was going back to the Ebuneke ship area and realising the little corridor of containers and prefab buildings you stealth through is part of a sprawling, fully furnished shanty town. I think I spent over an hour just looting it and reading emails.

Edit: almost forgot --- the little urban legends about Night City lore that sometimes break in on the radio are being read by Mike Pondsmith!

Mental to think some of the (rushed) launch reviews moaned about the world being empty.

The braindances really annoy me and I wish you could skip them!

It’s particularly bad when replayed. I enjoyed the story on the first go. It kills the pace of the game on subsequent playthroughs.

I wish you could skip the entire heist early in the game tbh. It puts me off doing a replay.

I guess if you already know how it's going to play out it's not very interesting a second time, but I really enjoyed the heist. The braindance too, I like that it adds a gameplay element that's cyberpunk in theme but not about combat.

Somehow they are missing something Witcher 2 and 3 had. I guess it is the gameplay which is so bad (particularly early on) Preparing for and killing the griffin was fun in multiple runs due to the fact you could play it in somewhat different ways. The heist kinda goes one way and it is kind of bad in dialogue with utter shit gameplay. If there were multiple ways it could go it would be fun to do multiple times. Or if you could really find different things in the bd on multiple runs.

edit: also the game was so long by the time you finished it you almost had nostalgia for the beginning parts. This is kinda short.

Spoiler

By “legendary netrunner” do you mean rache Bartmoss, friend of alt Cunningham and man single-handedly responsible for permanently crashing the original internet and causing The Collapse lol

I'm not very far in but this game is  staggering. I can't get over how much this feels like a living and breathing city. Granted it's missing the usual people/cars density, but I'll take it. I find myself driving carefully, and trying to make sense of street signage.

The whole upgrade system is baffling, things like spending the blue points. I realized in tiny text I needed 4 points to be able to buy the next level of a thing. With so many options my usual paranoia of wondering if my build is optimal is rising but I'm hoping it all makes sense at some point.

Just let that stuff wash over you, it will make as much sense as it ever needs to.

In other news, after seeing her investments wiped out by the Arasaka crash V has had to come out of retirement. Sadly she’s so short of eddies she’s forced to use back street rippers for even the most basic tuneups:

These punks might not be good, but they sure are cheap!

I’ve been playing on PS5 in Ray Tracing mode and the density is way higher than it used to be, although it is only 30 FPS. I really like this mode though it’s breathtaking visually. When the 4090 cards come out I’ll be watching some play through videos just in order to appreciate the game running at that fidelity.

I’ve written about this in length before, but videos of raytracing don’t really have anywhere near the same impact as being able to squat yourself next to a pile of rained on garbage bags as they reflect the animated billboard across the road. The general immersion can be overwhelming when you’re interacting with the environment, to the point where I’d say it’s at times stronger than VR.

People may scoff at the technology now (and for good reason), but hopefully by the time the next round of consoles come around it’ll be the next big thing and everyone will be on board.

But yeah, I wanted a 3080 for the sole reason of RT CP2077. I desperately want to upgrade to a 40XX just so I can go faster than 70-90FPS Psycho settings - but I can’t justify the cost right now, unfortunately. Would love to play at a locked 120Hz on our new telly!!
