I'm really enjoying this, it's definitely living up to it's promise. I like how it doesn't want to push me onto 'good' or 'bad' paths, I can just role play my character how I want and not feel like I'm choosing suboptimal options all the time.

It's also really immersive, I love just hanging around, tinkering with my gear and implants. Then do some missions, head home for a rest. I wish you could have a proper meal like in Yakuza though.

All they needed to do was badge it as early access. I am endlessly confused when companies want to release broken RPGs (cough, Bethesda) instead of doing a Larian.

Because they had to release on console as well. Come on, Moz, I didn't peg you for a blinkered PC Master Racer. ;)

You can do early access on consoles. They just deceived everyone.

I’ve probably asked this before when it’s come up, but how did they deceive everyone?

It’s interesting to me as I absolutely loved my playthrough of it and it was no buggier than any Bethesda RPG at launch. It was perfectly playable and easy to forgive a few oddities once you realised the scale of the thing. Of course they’ve been tweaking it since then, just as they did with Witcher 3, so I’m confused as to why this got such a hard time.

I can’t remember the devs over promising anything, but I really only briefly took notice of the pre launch publicity as I’d watched a few trailers and knew it was in safe hands.

It baffles me why some people still seem really angry about it, rather than just getting on and discovering how good it actually is. I’m not aiming that at you by the way, but even you claiming deception I find a bit over the top. It’s an amazing game and always has been.

Because it was released in such an appauling state on the two base consoles that it was borderline unplayable and crashed so frequently that most players couldn't get through the game. QA and release certifications are there for a reason, so the piece of software that people are buying is actually fit for purpose.

So you had a better time? played it on a beefier console that the base PS4 or Xbone VCR? that doesn't change the fact that it was completely broken on the platforms with the largest userbase.

Fair enough. You're right, I played it on Series X, where it's been decent since launch. Maybe they should have held back the previous gen versions until they got it into a playable state.

I was going to say I wasn't aware it was so bad on those, but I probably have read that somewhere before and forgotten.

It was a very frustrating launch, especially for those looking forward to it on PS4 or Xbox One. At the time I had a base slim PS4 and an Xbox One X, and I couldn’t get hold of a PS5 or Xbox Series X for love nor money. I just couldn’t justify playing it in that state just for the sake of it.

So it wasn’t until the following March (2021) when I managed to get hold of a Series X that I actually got to play it, some four of five months after launch. And it ran fine but it wasn’t until a year or so after that we finally received the actual next gen enhanced versions, which I still haven’t tried.

I imagine that there will be a next next gen version on PS6 or whatever, and it will be mind blowing. Looking at that recent 4090 RTX trailer it shows just how amazing this game can look. The possibilities are endless.

Skyrim was just as bad on PS3 at launch but people have short memories when it comes to Bethesda games

The difference being that PC aside this was the only option, well that or Xbox 360. So those versions got patched into a much better condition, and console players didn’t feel they had to buy a next gen console just to play the game in an acceptable state.

To me it felt like Cyberpunk on base consoles was sent out to die, they were just fulfilling contractual obligations and capitalising on sales from the much larger user base, and I think that’s what made people reassess their position on CDPR as a business, who up until that point were very much seen as independent heroes always on the side of the customer.

They definitely fucked up but they also did a lot to try to make amends. Refunds, free upgrades, patches etc. To me CDPR still are a company that I trust to deliver amazing gaming experiences and that are dedicated to keep supporting (and upgrading) their games for a long time after release.

I just restarted this (was about 10 hours in after launch before abandoning) and chose a different background. Wow, Corpo is a whole load of nothing, eh? I thought the Nomad intro worked better in terms of fitting with the ‘welcome to Night City’ montage. Corpo set up something that could have been cool and instantly ditched it in a pretty rubbish way, I thought.

Still, on with the real game now, I guess!
