Finally got to play this tonight (demo) after giving it wide berth since launch.

I'm actually impressed with it especially considering how much negativity has surrounded this. Love the feel of a future city and despite initially feeling the city was "dead" when you start exploring it opens up a bit more and feels much more alive.

Nice use of the PS5 controller both in the triggers when driving and the odd phone noises and jingles that come through.

Playing in performance mode and feels nice and solid. Tried RT and it's horrible feels very sluggish and to be honest isn't a huge improvement over the visuals in performance mode from what I can see.

Just getting used to all the controls etc seems a bit overwhelming at times! Not come across many bugs certainly not game breaking anyway.

Characters in the game feel a little flat at times bit only been playing for a couple of hours. Worth £20? (PSN store price) think I'd pay this for it however have too much to play at the moment and I expect it will pop up again in sale later on in the year.

Considering picking up the PS4 version, so I can play it on PS5 with haptic feedback.

I already own the Series X version, tell me NO!

It’s only £20. Treat yourself if that’s what you want. You deserve it.

Further than I got at launch, and honestly, whilst it isn't the saving holy grail shining star for open world RPGs, it is certainly a fun world to be in (and bleak!)

The side quests are nothing crazy and some of the main quests feel like bloated side quests, but it delivers world lore in spades if you enjoy reading... Which is what everyone says makes Skyrims lore and world good, so can't really have double standards can we?

Combat is alright, nothing amazing but not dreadful. Driving feels much better than it did. A real fun bit of escapism if you ask me.

I think there will be those that hate this regardless, but honestly, it is not horrific. And I usually despise open worlds. At least this one offers ridiculous views throughout, and characters that are not totally stiff... Not totally anyway.

It's a brilliant game. Lots of the negativity was down to the pathetic showing on console (rightly so) but it was miles better on PC. The patch has obviously improved the console specific problems but it's also tightened the game up overall, on all formats. I've played a few missions and they have definitely improved/tweaked a lot of things.

It was never, ever a bad game and the main gripes seem to have now been sorted. I highly recommend it. It's a boss game.

Indeed also not a huge fan of open worlds but this feels like a bleak future world a different place. It's like playing in a Blade Runner film. It's very ambitious which is part of the problem I guess (technical hitches) but it feels like a place you want to explore.

@amc totally agree. If someone likes Assassin's creed and gives this shit... Well, then I hope it's because they don't like the CP genre because there is no other excuse! Way better.

@MattyP I think an open world futuristic game, in a futuristic world helps the game a tonne, but the systems are not that bad. If anything, it asks you to spend time working out how you want to play rather than holding your hand. I detest huge skill trees, but I just decided to go full pistol and fuck the rest.

The only other futuristic world I can think of really, is Crackdown 3... Maybe Batman Arkham Knight/City? But they were still incredibly gothic (big part of their appeal too, as they also have god awful skill trees... At least we will always have Asylum <3)

It still looks ridiculous on PC at 4K DLSS performance. Utterly fails to get anywhere near 60fps on a 3080 with ultra raytracing turned on, but that’s what gsync is for.
The new reflective cars just look ridiculous at night.

Im not sure I’ll ever actually finish the game though.

Don’t worry, apparently a mid generation console bump will hit 4K 60fps with full ray tracing

I’ve just done a like for like comparison between the Stadia and Series X versions, and man, they’ve properly done a number on the Stadia version. It looks godawful - blurry visuals, muffled sound, it looks like it’s waiting for the hi-res textures to load in. It’s still got this weird issue that means shadows over a certain distance disappear, so that distant corridors that should fade into darkness look like portals into the sun.

Weirdly, the performance and quality graphics modes both seem to run at 60fps. It honestly looks like they’ve turned it down to minimum settings. God knows what Google / CDPR have done to it, but it looks worse than the last-gen versions.

That’s not how it seemed to me - as I observed upthread, if you play it in Visual mode it looks like it used to look graphically as far as I can tell, but then the silky smooth frame rate it used to have is shattered, so it looks terrible anyway.

I was playing it on frame rate mode and you could barely read the advertising hoardings…it’s really quite incredible what they’ve done to it.

Yeah I should wait for it to be free on Game Pass. Can't be far off.

Not anytime soon that is the reason for the demo apparently (and the sale price at the moment).

Guess it might move to GP at some point... but if you want to play something why just not buy it?! Everything doesn't have to be on GamePass... :D

So I never played it when it came out. I bought it on Wednesday.

Damn it’s a bit bloody brilliant isn’t it? I went to play for an hour last night after baby T Pot went to bed…. I was on until fucking 1am!

Im on Series X, playing in performance mode. RayTracing mode seems mostly fine, but going into gun fights or places like Lizzies Bar the frame rate tanks. Performance is almost solid 60.

I took the Corpo path sand am really enjoying the story so far, love how the city feels with loads going on. Street vendors everywhere, loads of wee buildings you can go in etc. I’ve not had any massive bugs, a bit of clipping here and there with the character or other items. One point in a fight where I was teleported into the previous room. Nothing awful.

Looking forward to the kid going to bed tonight so I can have another shot on the game. It’s brill.

I suspect it's also a matter of perception and piling on with the general outrage. Skyrim has just been rereleased featuring the same old Bethesda jank, superficial world, and an astonishing lack of depth - yet in that case the jank is charming and it's still seen as one of the best games of all time. Yes, you need mods to make it good apparently but in that case that only adds to the charm somehow?

Of course there's a fair amount of time between these games but still given the release of Extra Special Slightly More HD We Guess Edition it's one I dare to make just to note that the difference in general perception is remarkable.

And I notice as a fan of RPGs I'm enjoying Cyberpunk a shitload more than I ever did Skyrim. They should have given it another year and cancelled the last gen versions, but the game itself seems fine and enjoyable to me.

Weird, I was switching back and forth between the two graphics modes, and could barely see a difference in that they both looked smooth but dreadful. I don’t understand the economics of Stadia so I’ve no idea whether this is correct, but it does feel like they’ve dialled everything down a few notches to save money.

The HDR in this is fucked, right?

So!
...as I own both a PS5 and a XsX I downloaded the trial on both and have been playing it on both... it's rare you get a trial this long on both platforms so you can compare and contrast.

HDR seems fucked on PS5 but not fucked on XsX.

When you boot up on PS5, it'll switch on HDR, but appears to be SDR in an HDR container? then there's an option to set "HDR10" in the options and it all looks totally washed out, even when setting the HDR to something sensible for my C9 (peak 800 nits, paper white 160 nits)

XsX is a different story, it boots in HDR and looks correct! There's no "HDR10" option and setting the peak/paper settings the same it looks awesome.

Also! my observations (which might be all wrong) -

  • PS5 Ray-tracing mode seems to stick to 30 fps better
  • XsX seems to stick to 60 fps a tiny bit better in Performance mode
  • XsX defo seems to be a higher resolution in Performance mode

I'll probably get the XsX version, as I also prefer to play fps games on that pad.
