ya know what..

I'ma just say it, THIS...THIS is the game i have wanted for 25 years!

yes, there have been RPGS, but to be honest, i really just dont give a fuck about "fantasy" settings!?

why the fuck are rpgs set there!? , the last rpg i really liked was alpha protocol! or stalker! summit modern!

the fact is since i saw this (seriously, could you image if this had come out in 94!?!?!) -

and then this (which simply did'nt work well)

Or, even Headhunter!

I have wanted a future city rpg inline with the likes of escape from LA, johnny mnemonic or demolition man kinda thing, i wanted that quintessential late 80's early 90s "future" provided in video game form...and...its here...it is! it really is!

I spent a butt load buying my pc last year for this game (before it was delayed...and delayed)...and...I'm happy i did...as its...its, just so much more that i could have expected or wanted!?!

Yes, its still has video game "tropes", but, sadly, it had to "work" on ps4/bone.

lets be honest, the sequel to this is going to be something else again!

Yes i am playing on high end PC, and... It... Is... Glorious!

Love that, all of it, i'll get this as a Christmas Present, my PC isn't good enough, but i'll play on PS5 or XSX, and i can't wait.

OK, I'm a 1070/Ryzen 5/NVME/16gb pleb, but this looks like dogshit. I MUST be missing something. Running on the DF recommended settings, 1080p widescreen the city at night looks like a PS2 game (literally like Deus Ex from 2001). Everything has a strange, glistening shimmer to it. It's also running at 30fps or less. Character models look sort of first generation PS4.

I mean, I appreciate I'm a tech pleb, but after playing Death Stranding for the first time today (which looks absolutely astonishing) this is almost insultingly bad. And yes, it has bugs, no point even mentioning that. Having all trees visible in the gameworld at all times through walls as soon as I started was an early indication it wasn't going to be a smooth ride.

And the controls. Dear lord. I'm having to use pad, but even then it's only half controllable after tweaks. I assume this really is a game that suddenly sings when you push tech at it, but I'd still expect it to look a bit better than it does on a 1070. As I say, Death Stranding was actually breathtaking.

As this isn't the PC thread I guess my gameplay impressions are that it's very much a videogame in which you do videogame things.

I expected a new Midnight album and what I got was the Busted album where they thought they'd give synthwave a shot.

That shimmer sounds like over-extended DLSS to me - it is a technique that works better the higher your resolution (e.g. it's pretty good at extrapolating a 1080p signal into 4k; it's less good at extrapolating 480p to 1080p), and it's faced with a game of extremely high contrast, neon cityscapes filled with hard angles (as compared with the gorgeous Death Stranding's somewhat desaturated, softer natural landscapes), so any errors it makes are much more obvious.

But yeah, even with that caveat the game shouldn't look terrible - you're at the recommended level for 1080p non-raytraced after all, so that doesn't sound great.

Not going to get DLSS on a 1070. I've switched of film grain because that was nasty, but it's more a sort of shifting pixel creep over reflective surfaces. Just looks really peculiar (and wrong).

In terms of the actual game (I'll take my PC whines to the PC tech thread) I think I can see some potential. it is, at least, a lot more of an RPG than I thought it would be (in the traditional sense) and as others have said the gunplay feels like it could be quite impactful (though enemies seem to be incredible bullet sponges).

That shimmer is the screen space reflections, it uses a dithering technique which leaves weird trails and artefacts. Put it on high!

And come into he tech talk thread for more help, I've got it running at 30fps pretty solidly on ultra/high on a 970!

Inspired by the photos in here I checked out Photo Mode. Pretty impressed and the feature to move around your character in the scene is a new one for me, really really handy for lining up shots just how you want. Sadly exporting to Twitter from PS4 kills a lot of resolution and brightness, it actually looks really sharp on the TV and the contrast's better. As you can see indoor areas can still look awesome on PS4 especially if you aren't moving.

Is he a vampire?

That's the conundrum. They will have to rig a player character model for the sole purpose of displaying in ray-traced reflections.

It'll be on their list, just somewhere near the bottom, I guess.

Doh, having been a 10-series user until a few months ago, you'd think I'd remember that DLSS was only added from the 20s onwards, but apparently not

But yeah, it's very much an RPG. Having played it a fair bit since the 1.04 patch came out, it's definitely a lot more Witcher in storytelling and levelling than Deus Ex, but does have a bit of Deus Ex DNA in its level structure - particularly its smaller missions. Its more 'cinematic' missions hew a lot closer to The Witcher, however, being more 'conversation with multiple actions followed by scripted action', rather than the smaller missions' mini-sandboxes.

The bullet sponge thing definitely abates somewhat as you advance; I was worried it wouldn't for me, as I've gone full stealth and tech build - a whole 1 point put into the Reflex attribute, and no perks spent in there at all - but even though my focus is entirely on running silent and wreaking havoc on enemy systems, having scavenged decent weapons has meant I can still handle enemies quickly in combat if needs be:

(this is on Hard, so enemy HP is generally higher than usual; even with that caveat, I've not yet found any enemies that can take a headshot from that rifle)

Try running into something.

Or just using them! Touch of the brake and they start going sideways but in a most bizarre way. Like least the cars drift, especially the less desirable cars. They seem to handle much better weirdly.

I won a legendary( yellow/orange is leg, right?) smart smg and it is borderline broken. Perfect gun for @choddo as you don't even need to aim. Just pull the trigger and the bullets home in on whomever you have the gen pointed in the general direction of.

Sod using that, back to the katana for me.

I will happily take that off you for a million eddies

Glad they're working on patches quickly. I've parked the game at the end of Act 1 for now as seem to have had more than my share of glitches on Xbox X in quality mode.

1. Invisible cars

2. Floaty hands

3. Missing hands

4. Ragdoll enemies just falling to the ground

5. Enemies appearing randomly sometimes spawning where I'm standing causing a few seconds of glitch hilarity.

I'm loving the world, the combat, and the feel of the game, but the constant minor glitches are putting me off. Will gladly return to it when they've fixed it up in a couple of months.

Shot three cops. Got a wanted level. Drove round the corner. Wanted level gone.

threw two grenades on a crowded bridge, everyone jumps out of their cars and runs away, no warning level.

it’s an open world game that works if you treat it purely as set dressing, and not something to systematically experiment with. If you’re looking for the latter, play Watchdogs Legion.

it certainly isn’t genre defining or breaking.

well, it’s easy to break I suppose.

Ghost cars in the desert, drivers rendering in but not vehicles, footstep audio dropping in and out randomly, no collision detection at all, climbing into a driver's seat already being used and ending up somehow inside the NPC, HUD elements appearing and disappearing on screen at random - sometimes the same button prompt in two different areas, people going up and down stairs with no animation at all, people walking through walls during cut scenes, random crashes.

Phew. think that's the lot for me so far.

It's still my goty

Yep, it's the same with The Witcher 3. Everything outside of the story and RPG elements is dressing, at least Cyberpunk has good combat and stealth in addition to good story and the RPG elements. I reckon everyone hoping for emergent gameplay prior to release were never going to be happy with this.
