Night City feels like a step up in creating a sense of place, in the way HL2, Stalker and RDR2 did in their different ways.

When it's working as intended, you don't feel like you're in a bubble of activity like in most open world games.

It's still massively condensed compared to a real city layout of course. I suppose the next step is going to be painting in all the streets/buildings outside of the hand-crafted areas of interest procedurally like Flight Sim is doing.

I just did a side gig. Had to break into a place (Undetected if possible) and plant a bug on a car. Place is small. There's like 20 mobs including a couple of robots. I was spotted in seconds so went loud because I'm a mother fucking pro. Then I got shouted at for accidentally blowing up the car and didn't get paid.

Actually, traversal and climbing stuff seems well done - you jump and pick yourself up from edges pretty well. Did a bit of exploration across some containers and trailers, and that felt really natural.

On the other hand, chances of sticking to a ladder seem 50/50.

I'm calling bullshit on the mph the game says your travelling at.  You get a to max, and then the figures keep going up but you're not actually going any faster. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors with this game.

I dunno, when I'm doing over 200MPH and the mini map says 'you should have taken that left turn I sprang on you after you'd driven past it' it takes an awful long time to slow down.

S'all much of a muchness anyway. Only place you can get speed like that is out in the desert as you're asking for trouble doing it in NC.

Gotta love the retro futuristic dashboards on the cars and bikes. Crazy amounts of details on the vehicles too like scrolling numberplates, neon underlighting (which lights up the ground underneath), winking lights and strips, animated displays on exteriors and so on.

Also its only really the car you start with thats got really terrible handling so far. Since then every other vehicle I've had has been ok or even good unless you drive at high speed. Recommend driving bikes in first person, its way easier to control and looks cool. They even made stuff like rubbish trucks look cool.

Another tip - I found last night that if you go to Database in the menu, scroll down past weapons and vehicles and you can get info on controls, mechanics like how the garage works, all combat info and other tutorials. Pretty handy and I learned some stuff I'd been confused about. The game should have pointed me here earlier (if it did, I forgot about it).

I'm still in utter love with this. Just been walking and driving around the city picking up the mini side quests and they all are a wonderful distraction. The loot and progression system always makes it feel like I'm working towards something while exploring what must be the most detail and structure packed city in all of video games.

Same here. I'm constantly in astonishment. Any part of the city looks absolutely phenomenal at any time of day.

The only thing the city seems to be missing is a WipeOut track running through it.

Quick question.

if I start this, how much of the main story do I have to do before it just lets me loose to roam around and explore and do side missions etc?

I was thinking of doing that over Xmas but not starting the main story fully until the next gen update comes out. I’m on series X.

You’d best finish act one, so about five hours. But some of the side missions are the best bits.

This is excellent so far. Playing on series x in quality mode and I think it looks great for the most part. Just met Johnny Silverhand and really starting to get into the story. No major bugs either!

How you finding quality mode? I switched to Performance for 60fps and feel I'd struggle to go back now.
