I’ve been pouring attribute and perk points into Reflexes and Blades (and a few into Cold Blood) and at level 10 with a green level Katana I’m pulling a Kill Bill in every combat situation I run into, limbs and heads flying everywhere, bloody brilliant fun!

The current consensus on next-gen versions seems to be that it may be a long way into next year before they arrive but I have to wonder how much there really is to do. Sure, there's probably some time to be spent on the graphics engine to make some of the extra techniques and effects work performantly on the new consoles, but the really time-consuming stuff like up-rezzing / remastering content is already done; largely it's a case of getting some appropriately calibrated version of the PC game together.

Implement velocity architecture

Implement VRR

Implement AMD DLSS variant for massive performance gains

Implement DualSense

It is not just about copying the right PC settings profile. You need to implement hardware APIs properly to unlock that 12TF performance. See Destiny 2 before/after next-gen patch. Night and day. Or Gears 4 vs Gears 5.

In PS4/Xbox One compatibility mode these consoles can’t even access the full CPU/GPU power because it is sandboxed/encapsulated.

First time I left my flat there was a policeman standing on the stairs. He has a little icon above his head, so I thought maybe a side quest or something will activate when I talk to him. No, he just gives me aggro, so I walk away all respectful like - then I suddenly get a wanted level!

What’s that all about then? After a bit of Benny Hill running around a car park with them, they just gave up and my wanted level disappeared. I’m not sure what triggered or cancelled it.

I mean, I literally said "some time to be spent on the graphics engine to make some of the extra techniques and effects work performantly on the new consoles" so it's not clear what you're responding to there. Besides, I'm not sure there's anything much to be done to implement VRR - i.e. it's dealt with at the API and hardware level - or that porting graphical effects from PC DirectX to XBox DirectX is that much effort in the main.

My point was that many of the stories and quotes have been suggesting they weren't even confident the NG version would appear in 2021 at all, or at least that it would be in the second half. With what it seems like they really have to do, I can't see why it should take longer than, say, 3 months and I'm optimistic that will turn out to be the case. Apart from anything else, I can see some 'encouragement' from Sony and MS on this front, and it's not like the NG versions have to be 100% perfect the moment they arrive - or that CDP are exactly averse to releasing things in a partially finished state.

Fascinating to read that allegedly it’s already recouped production and marketing costs.

10m copies even at £30 each = £300m.

Have they ever revealed or do we have any idea how much a game like this has cost to produce? Because for the amount of time it’s taken and the amount of people who’ve been working in it that doesn’t seem like that much outlay!

I have to say.... As someone who was not in any way caught up in the hype train and knew nothing apart from the 7 year old trailer and a few bits and pieces here and there - I'm really really really really really enjoying this.

But then again I expected nothing revolutionary.

But yeah I am really liking this a lot but my tastes are maybe weird... Loved Tenet for instance

Is there any point in reading all the shards other than lore?

Some of them unlock new content, usually the 'archived conversation' ones.

I've got a new cyberware mod that slows down time for 2 seconds when I get spotted, and lets me move at full speed, and it's super overpowered, to the point with those 'crime in progress' ones I can run in, hoover up the quest item and then run away, completing the mission before the enemies can even go into their combat state. Easy money.

I watched the Digital Foundry PS5/Series SX comparison video and despite what John said, it seems to me that performance mode on the X is the best way to play, as that gives 60fps and more pedestrian/traffic density. One side-by-side comparison between X and PS5 highlighted this, and it was a really tangible improvement, unlike much of what the DF boys tend to focus on (ambient occlusion, for example - the side by side looked identical to me).

Rich made a very good point though - the next gen versions are going to have to include a 60fps mode in some form, now that we’ve all had a taste of it in the theoretically inferior BC modes.

The shinies are going to have to be spectacular for people to feel like they’re trading up, and not down, because the game already looks spectacular at HD resolutions and without advanced effects like ray tracing or DLSS.

New DF next gen face off vid is up. Obviously this is all using back cap. Generally they comment that next generation machines offer big improvements on the poor offering on last gen. However they are clear that at the moment the back cap versions are vastly inferior to PC and for many people the next gen versions are hopefully going to be worth waiting for.

PS5 - Most stable frame rate at 60

SX - Best looking visually at stable locked 30 and slightly better visually at 60 (though 60 has a slightly wobbly fps)

SS - Surprisingly very solid locked 30 with okay visuals. “Best and solid way to play the game cheaply” They seemed genuinely impressed with this one considering.

Summary was if you are okay with 30fps get the SX version as it looks the best by some way.

If you want solid 60 then PS5 is best though image quality takes a nosedive. Even noting things like crowd density being considerably less.

In a game like this I really would rather have both so think, outside of tinkering about in the world I might wait till next year to play the full on story mode.

That DF video was yesterday, it's already out of date as the new hotfix has significantly improved the visual quality on series x at the very least. And I'd guess performance on the 60fps mode.

As for the next gen patch, it's likely to have some kind of Ray tracing and it doesn't support it on AMD cards on pc yet.

Because AMD’s Ray Tracing and DLSS competitors are simply not ready yet. If they are not released yet how can developers implement them? From what I read between the line RDNA 2 will only be fully operational mid next year.

Finally started this this morning, not too far in, can you change your appearance, my hair is overly red.

I restarted I was so sickened by my knackered attempt in the char creator after getting a shock in the mirror.  Much, much happier now. :)

And finally got a bit more stuck in after pissing around. On my way to the Plaza after that chaotic meat fest oh and a BD to have first. Love it, the atmosphere is off the scale and looks just astonishing at times 8-)

Some of the launch titles on the PS5 already feature ray-tracing...?

yes and some of the series S/X have it too but it’s not the “proper” RDNA2 optimised version - AMD should have their answer to DLSS mid 2021 and this “should” allow their cards to push more ray tracing without tanking the framerate/resolution to achieve the effect.

I might even begin to suspect that they deliberately exaggerated the gap between releases to avoid denting their more immediate previous-gen sales - I imagine the numbers discussed in that Eurogamer article might have looked quite a bit different if people knew they only had to wait three months, say.

I guess they might be doing some fiddling about under the hood to take proper advantage of the faster storage. But hopefully they've been working on it for a while since getting devkits ages ago.

The rumour I've seen floating about that the patch might even miss 2021 sounds like bollocks to me.

...

While obviously it's a pisser that the game has been launched in an unstable state, I expect people will forget about it in the long term. I don't think people struggled on with the 360/PS3 versions of GTAV for long.

I don't think CDPR's current role as industry whipping boy will last for long either. It largely boils down to the simple fact that European studios that don't have a charismatic 'figurehead' working social media and the PR circuit in a US timezone basically leave a vacuum for supermarket tabloids like Polygon to fling any old shit to keep their SEO numbers up. I hope CP2077 (and GOG) continue to do well enough in the long term that they don't have to crunch, and they can get into a position like Valve where they can pick and choose the scope of their projects. (Whether Valve is a healthy environment is another conversion)
